Output Caps For Dehavilland Ultraverve

Has anyone changed the output caps on their Ultraverve, and if so with what and to what effect?  A couple of years ago Kara suggested Mundorf's with the caveat that she had not experimented with any of the more esoteric options.  Thanks for your advice...

Jupiter copper foil caps 2.2uf. $200 for both at Sonic Craft. Place the Duelund .01uf silver foil bypass caps in parallel

I found the quote below on the Soundlabs Group website under Auracap instructions, is what you are talking about above not in the signal path ?

Do not use bypass capacitors in the signal path. A single capacitor for DC blocking / AC coupling creates a simple path with one time constant. The signal quality will be compromised if a bypass or multiple bypass capacitors are added to a signal path capacitor.

Do you have the specs on the Duelund bypass caps? I looked above in the thread and only noticed 0.33 uF value, but no Duelund type description...Thanks.
I helped a v3 owner just this week with the same mod. He simply added the Duelund silver bypass caps and loves it!
Hi HIFIBUG,

would you care to share the pics of the cap replacement? I have an UV 3 with stepped attenuator.

Well, that question is not as easy. Not sure the size of the cap will make that much of a difference. It really depends on the capacitance of the IC your using and the output impedance of the preamp. Yours has an output impedance of 600-1000 ohms depending on the volume and frequency. Impedance will rise as you turn it up.

Best case in an output impedance of under 500 ohms to avoid top end roll off on a long 4-6 meter IC. How long are your ICs and what are they?
Ah, but am I correct about the higher total capacitance driving longer cable runs better?  I believe a gold star is in order only if both of my assumptions were true...
Correct. You get a gold star! Keep to total capacitance at 2.2uf to 2.8uf or so.
I'm currently switching back and forth between two amps depending on my state of audiophile neurosis at the particular moment.  One is a pair of DeHavilland 50A tube mono blocks with an input impedance of 100K, the other a Clayton 100S solid state amp with an input impedance of 47K.  Occasionally, when I'm feeling nostalgic,  I'll pull out my old BEL1001 solid state amp which I used for about 25 years and listen to that for a short while.  That has an input impedance of 27K.  I'm guessing that you were going to recommend a lower value cap, which would be less expensive and smaller, if I was only driving a high input impedance amp, but I would like the option of being able to drive a solid state amp as well, so the 2.2uf is probably the best bet.  Also, at some point I may move the amp(s) closer to the speakers and use a longer interconnect.  I'm not sure if the larger cap value would be advantageous for that or not...

What amp is being paired with this preamp and do know the input impedance of the amp?
Thanks, Bill.  $900 for two caps, in addition to being rather pricey, does seem like a bit of overkill for a $3K preamp. Or maybe not.  I have no objection to paralleling the caps and will probably wind up using your original suggestion.  Would I be looking at an excessive break in period?

Another good choice if you don’t want to parallel caps is to go with the Jupiter copper foil caps, 600vdv. Get the 2.2uf value. Sonic Craft sells them for $140 each or so. They are spectacular. Right up there with a Duelund CAST in this position. Make sure you order them matched within 1% of each other. Dimensions are......

1.562″ X 2.125″

Check to see see if they will fit.
No issues at all going into my friends mklll. Very easy to do. When I say no problem, I mean fitting the Jupiter and Duelund bypass. The Duelund silver foils are very small and the Jupiter’s fit.

The Duelund CAST is a great cap, but a 2.2uf value will be huge and cost you a Fortune! $900 for the two 2.2uf caps! My suggestion gives you as good sound quality for a lot less. The Duelund RS cap will sound great, but not as good as the Jupiter and Duelund silver foil combo.
Hi, I actually just took a few photographs of the actual install.  Yes there are issues with fitting them in but they are minor.  Tell me how I can get the pictures to you and I will shoot them over.  I'm not the most computer genius.  My email is spfnever@aol.com. Steven
Steven - Which Duelunds did you use?  I see that there are a couple of design variations. Kara, as well as Bill (grannyring) recommended 2.2uf.  Did you use a bypass cap as well?  The Duelunds are rather large, any issues fitting them in the chassis?  I agree that Kara, in addition to being a gifted designer, is a consummate professional and has been extremely helpful and honest...

Hi, I own an Ultraverve and a pair of Aries G's. I installed Duelunds and although it took forever for them to burn in, my Ultraverve is now, quite spectacular to hear! BTW, Kara rules !

Steven.
Need the 600v Jupiter. 100v is for speaker crossovers. Expect the Duelund silver to improve everything top to bottom considerably. The impact they have is substantial improving the SQ of the output cap position by some 20%.
Thanks for your expertise and help.  Bill, would I need the Jupiter cap rated at 100VDC or 600VDC?  Also, while it is impossible to put an absolute objective value on the benefit of using the bypass cap, how much of a subjective sound quality difference would you say there is using both caps as opposed to just the Jupiters??

How any volts needed D.C. .
i have been using to many surprisethe excellent Fostex Copper foil
Tin toil . One of the engineers said their dialectic is totally different
then the competition as well as they listened for almost 18 months the correct balances between Copper and tin and dialectic
and purity ,and temp you anneal. I can tell you I personally feel in my speakers ,and output on my preamp using 3.3uf Fostex they are rich but fast and open the Tin foil I feel make it better in some circumstances to all Copper foil they are better then All MundorfSilver  oil ,and gold oil not tipped up just very natural
designed to complement the Fostex super tweeter, and single drivers . The only negative is 240-250 Volt D.C. Is max , and
.33uf , to 3.3uf are max sizes . I have mixed with a Clarity CSA,
and Mundorf Supreme in another speaker and balance very nicely
.33 for bypass duties is excellent nothing over done what so ever
with these caps I feel these are better then the Entrylevel Duelund
caps these are a 13 rating  a personal new favorite priced less
then a Mundorf Silver oil.  Speakers plenty of Voltage , amp, preamp depending on the circuit well worth checking out
the improvement on depth of image alone as well as Bass punch
vs the Mundorfs  or blended together is well worth the trouble
give 250-300 hours to full runin solid copper leads  , coated ?
Ok here is what you do if you have the money. The total capacitance needed should be between 1.8uf - 2.8uf. Best option;

1) Jupiter copper foil caps 2.2uf. $200 for both at Sonic Craft. Place the Duelund .01uf silver foil bypass caps in parallel. $200 cost total from Part Connextion. This will transform your preamp in ways you thought were not possible.

If this is too much money then to this,

2) Jupiter copper foil cap 2.2uf only.....no bypass.

Be sure to place the outer foil end of the Jupiter cap on the input and the other side towards the output (rca jacks). The outer foil side is marked with a solid line next to the printing.

These options will sound far more organic, real, and natural than the Mundorf caps.
