Really? I have been preparing to buy a pair of 20.1's in the next couple of weeks.....anyone know anything? If the new speaker (assuming this is real and not merely rumor) is a $30,000 model, it matters not, but if it is "replacing" the 20.1 and will be roughly in that price range, then perhaps I should hold off.....Thanks for any thoughts/info..... |

i spoke to wendell. he will not talk. i called the show in vegas. the representative told me he heard the speaker in minnesota, in a darkened room. he would not tell me what it was.
i guess we will need to wait until after ces. |
Well, I guess I am on hold then until I can get some more information. Too bad as I actually have the scratch and inclination to buy. Fortunately, CES is not too far off. Any speculation as to how long after CES it would be before the new speaker is actually available? |
Just spoke with my Magnepan dealer. He says that Magnepan would not reveal what the new speaker is, but that they unequivocally stated that the 20.1 was not being replaced. My dealer says that he has heard rumors of a new "statement" speaker being designed and that his best guess is that the new speaker will likely be a higher end model. Thus, hypothetically, the new speaker will displace the 20.1 as the king of the hill, but the 20.1 will remain in the lineup.
Anyone else hear anything? |
OK I will go out on a limb- the new model has an integrated sub with its own amp.....Avant Maggie. OK don't kill the messenger.
ET |
Is this a rumour that Magnepan will make a speaker that actually sounds listenable? Only kidding.............. |
Gawdbless,
OK so the Audiophile company that has the documented greatest customer satisfaction and loyalty doesn't make a "listenable" speaker??
So what are you listening to? I hope you say a single driver design so it shows you just like something different than resolution and dynamics. |
Mac, Speakers that actually have a sweet top end, and also a bit of wallop at the other end, what we audiophiles call bass! ..................Still only kidding. |
Magnepan sounds better than Gawdbless's posts!...just kidding |

Well looking back through some previous answers I see that Gawdbless just learned about MG-1's a couple of months ago, so I am about 99% sure that is his only experience with Maggies, and has not heard any of the subsequent models in the intervening 30yrs, especially with good associated equipment. If you put junk upstream of Maggies, they reveal that it's junk.
Anyway, can't wait to see the new Maggie at THE Show, pretty cool. |
Hey! I owned MG-1s for over 20 years and thru a factory rebuild. Sold 'em 13 months ago and bought more Magnepan.
I wish the new owner the best.
If I had the SPACE and 13 large, the 20.1s would be MINE, but could 'only' afford the 1.6s.
Would the new panels be a 'typmani ized', multipanel version of the 3 or 20 series? |
I like Magnepans, and I did buy a pair of MG-1's because they very cheap (not kidding). I regularly visit hi-fi shows so have heard lots of speakers including panel speakers, so I guess my '1%' is correct and 'your 99% sure' is incorrect. Happy listening. |
Gawdbless,
Your question a few months back was either disingenous, or you don't know anything about Maggies; Which is it? I tend to believe the latter. If you have heard them so often what was the point of your question regarding Maggies in October? Why don't you re-post it here a evidence of your expertise?
After re-reading that question and your assertation here they you have attended many shows and heard them, I am to assume that has been in the intervening 8 weeks since your post?? |
Mac,
I think I heard Maggies a the Denver 2007 (going from memory now), I think they were the 20's, if not then they were the 3.6's, they were taller than a door, or if you live in Texas more akin to a cat flap. The room was full of red wine and cheese with easy listening music ie 'jazz' being played for the very appreciative pipe and slipper brigade. I am not a big fan of Jazz and as the room was rather full and I did not want to upset the masses by asking for a bit of kick ass 'Rage against the Machine' at warp 10 volume.
My question going out to you maggie owners in October regarding an older model MG-1 compared to the newer models was because I am/was not familiar with this make of speaker (obviously) as anybody who has had them in their system over years and who have enjoyed them, and who know their weaknesses and strengths.
Happy New Year. |
A COUPLE OF PEOPLE ARE SELLING THE MAGNEPAN TYMPANI 3 SPEAKER ON EBAY. IVE OWNED ONE AND ALTHOUGH IT DID NOT HAVE A TRUE RIBBON..IT HAD THE LARGEST MIDRANGE EVER PRODUCED BY MAGNEPAN. THIS WOULD BE A CHEAP ALTERNATIVE AND ACTUALLY SOUND REAL GOOD. THE EIGHT PANEL SYSTEM REQUIRES LOTS OF ROOM AND A SEPERATE CROSSOVER. |
