My Long List of Amplifiers and My Personal Review of Each!

So I have been in a long journey looking to find the best amplifiers for my martin logan montis. As you know, the match between an amplifier and speakers has to be a good "marriage" and needs to be blend exquisitely. Right now, I think I might have found the best sounding amplifier for martin logan. I have gone through approximately 34-36 amplifiers in the past 12 months. Some of these are:

Bryston ST, SST, SST2 series
NAD M25
PARASOUND HALO
PARASOUND CLASSIC
KRELL TAS
KRELL KAV 500
KRELL CHORUS
ROTEL RMB 1095
CLASSE CT 5300
CLASSE CA 2200
CLASSE CA 5200
MCINTOSH MC 205
CARY AUDIO CINEMA 7
OUTLAW AUDIO 755
LEXICON RX7
PASS LABS XA 30.8
BUTLER AUDIO 5150
ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005

With all that said, the amplifiers I mentioned above are the ones that in my opinion are worth mentioning. To make a long story short, there is NO 5 CHANNEL POWER AMP that sounds as good as a 3ch and 2ch amplifier combination. i have done both experiments and the truth is that YOU DO lose details and more channel separation, etc when you select a 5 channel power amplifier of any manufacturer.
My recollection of what each amp sounded like is as follows:

ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005 (great power and amazing soundstage. Very low noise floor, BUT this amplifiers NEEDS TO BE cranked up in order to fully enjoy it. If you like listening at low volume levels or somewhat moderate, you are wasting your time here. This amp won’t sound any different than many other brands out there at this volume. The bass is great, good highs although they are a bit bright for my taste)

NAD M25 (very smooth, powerful, but somewhat thin sounding as far as bass goes)
Bryston sst2(detailed, good soundstage, good power, but can be a little forward with certain speakers which could make them ear fatiguing at loud volumes)

Krell (fast sounding, nice bass attack, nice highs, but some detail does get lost with certain speakers)

rotel (good amp for the money, but too bright in my opinion)

cary audio (good sound overall, very musical, but it didn’t have enough oomph)

parasound halo (good detail, great bass, but it still holds back some background detail that i can hear in others)

lexicon (very laid back and smooth. huge power, but if you like more detail or crisper highs, this amp will disappoint you)

McIntosh mc205 (probably the worst multichannel amp given its price point. it was too thin sounding, had detail but lacked bass.

butler audio (good amplifier. very warm and smooth sweet sounding. i think for the money, this is a better amp than the parasound a51)

pass labs (very VERY musical with excellent bass control. You can listen to this for hours and hours without getting ear fatigue. however, it DOES NOT do well in home theater applications if all you have is a 2 channel set up for movies. The midrange gets somewhat "muddy" or very weak sounding that you find yourself trying to turn it up.

classe audio (best amplifier for multi channel applications. i simply COULDNT FIND a better multi channel amplifier PERIOD. IT has amazing smoothness, amazing power and good bass control although i would say krell has much better bass control)

Update: The reviews above were done in January 2015. Below is my newest update as of October 2016:

PS AUDIO BHK 300 MONOBLOCKS: Amazing amps. Tons of detail and really amazing midrange. the bass is amazing too, but the one thing i will say is that those of you with speakers efficiency of 87db and below you will not have all the "loudness" that you may want from time to time. These amps go into protection mode when using a speaker such as the Salon, but only at very loud levels. Maybe 97db and above. If you don’t listen to extreme crazy levels, these amps will please you in every way.

Plinius Odeon 7 channel amp: This is THE BEST multichannel amp i have ever owned. Far , but FAR SUPERIOR to any other multichannel amp i have owned. In my opinion it destroyed all of the multichannel amps i mentioned above and below. The Odeon is an amp that is in a different tier group and it is in a league of its own. Amazing bass, treble and it made my center channel sound more articulate than ever before. The voices where never scrambled with the action scenes. It just separated everything very nicely.

Theta Dreadnaught D: Good detailed amp. Looks very elegant, has a pleasant sound, but i found it a tad too bright for my taste. I thought it was also somewhat "thin" sounding lacking body to the music. could be that it is because it is class d?

Krell Duo 300: Good amp. Nice and detailed with enough power to handle most speakers out there. I found that it does have a very nice "3d" sound through my electrostatics. Nothing to fault here on this amp.
Mark Levinson 532H: Great 2 channel amp. Lots of detail, amazing midrange which is what Mark Levinson is known for. It sounds very holographic and will please those of you looking for more detail and a better midrange. As far as bass, it is there, but it is not going to give you the slam of a pass labs 350.5 or JC1s for example. It is great for those that appreciate classical music, instrumental, etc, but not those of you who love tons of deep bass.

 It is articulate sounding too
Krell 7200: Plenty of detail and enough power for most people. i found that my rear speakers contained more information after installed this amp. One thing that i hated is that you must use xlr cables with this amp or else you lose most of its sound performance when using RCA’s.

Krell 402e: Great amp. Very powerful and will handle any speaker you wish. Power is incredible and with great detail. That said, i didn’t get all the bass that most reviewers mentioned. I thought it was "ok" in regards to bass. It was there, but it didn’t slam me to my listening chair.

Bryston 4B3: Good amp with a complete sound. I think this amp is more laid back than the SST2 version. I think those of you who found the SST2 version of this amp a little too forward with your speakers will definitely benefit from this amp’s warmth. Bryston has gone towards the "warm" side in my opinion with their new SST3 series. As always, they are built like tanks. I wouldn’t call this amp tube-like, but rather closer to what the classe audio delta 2 series sound like which is on the warm side of things.

Parasound JC1s: Good powerful amps. Amazing low end punch (far superior bass than the 402e). This amp is the amp that i consider complete from top to bottom in regards to sound. Nothing is lacking other than perhaps a nicer chassis. Parasound needs to rework their external appearance when they introduce new amps. This amp would sell much more if it had a revised external appearance because the sound is a great bang for the money. It made my 800 Nautilus scream and slam. Again, amazing low end punch.

Simaudio W7: Good detailed amp. This amp reminds me a lot of the Mark Levinson 532h. Great detail and very articulate. I think this amp will go well with bookshelves that are ported in order to compensate for what it lacks when it comes to the bass. That doesn’t mean it has no bass, but when it is no Parasound JC1 either.
Pass labs 350.5: Wow, where do i begin? maybe my first time around with the xa30.8 wasn’t as special as it was with this monster 350.5. It is just SPECTACULAR sounding with my electrostatics. The bass was THE BEST BASS i have ever heard from ANY amp period. The only amp that comes close would be the jC1s. It made me check my settings to make sure the bass was not boosted and kept making my jaw drop each time i heard it. It totally destroyed the krell 402e in every regard. The krell sounded too "flat" when compared to this amp. This amp had amazing mirange with great detail up top. In my opinion, this amp is the best bang for the money. i loved this amp so much that i ended up buying the amp that follows below.

Pass labs 250.8: What can i say here. This is THE BEST STEREO AMP i have ever heard. This amp destroys all the amps i have listed above today to include the pass labs 350.5. It is a refined 350.5 amp. It has more 3d sound which is something the 350.5 lacked. It has a level of detail that i really have never experienced before and the bass was amazing as well. I really thought it was the most complete power amplifier i have ever heard HANDS DOWN. To me, this is a benchmark of an amplifier. This is the amp that others should be judged by. NOTHING is lacking and right now it is the #1 amplifier that i have ever owned.

My current amps are Mcintosh MC601s: i decided to give these 601s a try and they don’t disappoint. They have great detail, HUGE soundstage, MASSIVE power and great midrange/highs. The bass is great, but it is no pass labs 250.8 or 350.5. As far as looks, these are the best looking amps i have ever owned. No contest there. i gotta be honest with you all, i never bought mcintosh monos before because i wasn’t really "wowed" by the mc452, but it could have been also because at that time i was using a processor as a preamp which i no longer do. Today, i own the Mcintosh C1100 2 chassis tube preamp which sounds unbelievable. All the amps i just described above have been amps that i auditioned with the C1100 as a preamp. The MC601s sound great without a doubt, but i will say that if you are looking for THE BEST sound for the money, these would not be it. However, Mcintosh remains UNMATCHED when it comes to looks and also resale value. Every other amp above depreciates much faster than Mcintosh.

That said, my future purchase (when i can find a steal of a deal) will be the Pass labs 350.8. I am tempted to make a preliminary statement which is that i feel this amp could be THE BEST stereo amp under 30k dollars. Again, i will be able to say more and confirm once i own it. I hope this update can help you all in your buying decisions!

This has been a truly interesting thread to read.  I have a Raven Integrated Reflection MK2 tube amp that absolutely powers my Wilson Audio Duette 2's.  i am curious whitecamaross how are you able to able to afford your unbelievable collection of audiophile products?  I am jealous in a way.  In my case, at least right now, I am super happy with my system.  If i change I definitely will consider you for your hand me downs....lol.
i still keep thinking this oppo 205 is a waste... so far, i am still not impressed. It is good, don't get me wrong, but it isn't a OMG improvement over my cheap samsung 4k bluray. I think the oppo 205 is a huge disappointment so far. Maybe they do a software update soon and that makes it come to life because folks i gotta be honest, this oppo 205 is no reference piece. It hasn't squashed my samsung 399 dollar 4k bluray and let's not even get into the conversation of it not having any apps which truly sucks.
My BEL 1001 (Brown Electronics Lab) sounds way better than any of the above amps. My speakers: Quad 57's - better than any of the above speakers! I have 50 years experience in this hobby and have seen many fads come and go! And I still prefer 2 channel over HT and LP over CD.

Much Thanks! for the report(s) - whitecamaross

you are really cranking (no pun) out the power amp reviews.

Feel free to give a shout out on your fave or local dealers/retailers.

Happy Listening!

COMING SOON: This amp has always been on my radar. I used the integrated before, but i wanted to bring a real amp to try and i believe it will be one of the most epic shootouts ever done by me. I am talking about the HEGEL H30 power amplifier. i am really looking forward to hearing this beast against the pass labs x350.8. I am going to NOT BE BIASED even though i love pass labs. i will try to be as objective as i can be and put it all out there. I expect that this h30 amp will be murdering the pass labs in regards to bass output and control. The question is how it will be when it comes to highs and mids?? that will be one fun thing to test out. Let’s see if i can bring this bad boy home and put it up against my x350.8!!
i have not had a chance to listen to them.
That said, i had a chance to listen to my monitor audio platinums over this long weekend. i learned quite a few things in terms o musicality and smoothness.
Here is a few things that most people don’t really know. Speakers are no no different than tvs. What i mean by that is when you go to best buy and look at the televisions playing, you will notice that the displays that grab your attention are the ones with a lot of brightness and with a lot of saturated colors. That said, we all couldn’t handle a tv in our house with that much brightness and with the lights being off while we watch a movie. Our eyes would totally burn!
Speakers are no damn different. If you walk into a room and audition speakers that sound very detailed and almost bright, you will instantly be like omg they sound phenomenal and the truth couldn’t be farther than that. This brings me to the monitor audio platinums. i played with my 803d3s and the platinums and did back to back sessions. Of course within the first 15 min the 803d3s sound amazing and make the platinums sound dull and boring in comparison UNTIL you sit down in front of the platinums for an extended period of time and that is when it hits you. You realize that all the detail is there and that they give you ZERO ear fatigue at any volume level. That is when you realize how to truly appreciate a different type of speaker.
The bass slam with these platinums is some of the best I’ve heard. They make my 803d3s sound anemic in comparison.

In addition to this, i am happy to say that i also purchased a 350.8 pass labs amp. This is indeed an incredible amp with beautiful highs and attack. i can say that it is a really good match for b&w d3 speakers because it smoothes out the high frequencies on the speakers. I like the bass as well and the overall musicality that exists in this amp.
With all this said, i decided to do a A/B comparison with the xs150s and the 350.8 while i played with the speakers and the first thing that stood out to me were the highs... It was not even a close match in terms of the detail, smoothness, silkiness that the xs amps possess. It almost felt like someone was throwing a blanket on the speakers each time i connected the 350.8. The xs totally demolished the highs of the x350.8
As far as the midrange, i would say it was kinda close in many ways. I really couldn’t gauge it too well to really give an opinion.
When it comes to bass, again i think the fact that my 803d3s aren’t really known for bass makes it very tough for me to hear if indeed the bass is that much different between both amplifiers.
The one thing was the massive soundstage thrown by the xs amps, but it kinda sucks that you have to wait for about 2 hours before they really open up and sound big and bold. I don’t care what anyone says, these xs amps NEED A FEW HOURS to sound best, but once they hit their stride, it is lights out game over for every other amp i have owned.
whitecamaross, thank you very much! Did you have chance to listen to kef reference 3? Really appreciate all your information. This has been the best thread for me!
thanks for the comments. I will try to update it after this long weekend ahead.
That said, i have listed my monitor audio Platinums!! This is the very first pair to hit audiogon so look hurry and take these!
I have shifted into b&w d3 for the time being to give these speakers a shot. With that said, here is my mini review on these Monitor audio Platinums Series 2:

1. HUGE IMPROVEMENT over series 1. Having owned the original platinums, i was not even prepared to hear how much more refined this new series is. It has a bigger soundstage and sounds very very electrostatic-like. Extremely smooth speaker.

2. MASSIVE BASS OUTPUT with a level of precision and speed that i haven’t heard before from any speaker under $15k.

3. The midrange is really something special with this speaker. The center channel is HANDS DOWN THE BEST center channel i have ever owned. It destroys the dynaudio confidence, Bryston tc1, paradigm c5, and the original platinum center. Again, this PLC350ii will make your neighbors hear the dialogue of your movies. Incredible width and spread that lets everyone hear every word spoken regardless of where they are seated.

4. This is in my opinion the best speaker under $15k. It destroys the sonus faber olympica 3, martin logan montis, golden ear triton 1s, Martin logan summit x, b&w 802 diamond, and YES i PREFER THIS SPEAKER OVER THE REVEL SALON 2 as well. I don’t think it has any competition under 15,000 dollars.

5. As far as home theater, these speakers are by far the best home theater experience i have had. Yes even better than the renaissance martin logan were for movies. They have such a huge dynamic swing that allows them to go from 0 to 100 mph in no time.

So many good components and speakers.  This my be my favorite on-going thread here on agon.

Whitecamaro, can you update your first post with all of the new stuff you've tested?  I think that first synopsis of everything is absolutely priceless!

A couple of updates:
803d3s: i fired these up yesterday and they have an enormous amount of detail. Incredible to say the least, but they do sound a bit lean in my room. That said, they are still breaking in so i hope the bass gets better.

Oppo 205: i watched a few movies with this player and i can’t really hear any sort of improvement when compared to my samsung 8500 4k player. It is VERY HARD to find any sort of change in sound when it comes to movies. I will say that if you are looking for a great 4k player, the oppo 203 is the way to go because i can almost guarantee that there is zero difference in terms of sound quality when it comes to movies between the 203 and the 205.
yes, you will read it has this dac and that dac and improved this and that, but can we actually EASILY detect an improvement in sound? that is the question and so far i am going to say HELL NO. However, unless this oppo 205 needs major break in time, i don’t see it being any better than any other 4k bluray player as far as sound. Again, i am using a great processor so maybe the processor is also doing alot of the work here and compensating the signal when it is coming from an average 4k bluray player.
Please note, my findings with this oppo 205 are without any break in time (not sure if there is any break in time needed with this unit or not yet and the manual says nothing about it).

interesting. i am thinking of trying an audio research preamp, but i also want to try another pass labs preamp. I am torn between both. That said, i was offered the Audio Research GSPre at a good deal, yet i don't know much about it and although it is beyond stunning, i am looking for a preamp with amazing bass and fullness. i am running b&w 803d3s and want to squeeze more bass out of them so i think buying a preamp that is known for great punch and dynamics would do the trick.

whitecamaross-

if you are considering Audio Research (ARC), look no further than the Ref5 SE model.  Keep me posted as you audition pre-amp(s).

Happy Listening!

i have heard that integrated and it is a great piece. It really is.
Anyhow, i have finally sold my mark levinson no52 reference preamp so i am officially in the market for a preamp.
My choices are pass labs & audio research (have never heard or owned it).
i am also breaking in my 803d3's as of today. They sound a tiny bit bright right now, but i know they will mellow out a little as i keep breaking them in.
My monitor audio platinum set up is going to going up for sale so if you are interested in it, please message me. As i stated above, it is the best multi channel set up i have owned. Very coherent, very detailed, incredible to say the least.
Thanks! for sharing- whitecamaross

I have been waning to demo the ML No. 585 integrated amp.
Many positive reviews out there. Some are still using the one before it- No. 383.

Happy Listening!
I love the pass labs and mark Levinson combo. I feel the mark Levinson has better highs than many tube preamps out there. This is one magical unit with amazing smoothness and midrange. The only other pre amp that is making me curious is the xs preamp. Besides that, nothing strikes my curiosity. It's THAT GOOD !
whitecamaross-

Thanks! for the updates to your system.  I hope that you can find buyers so that you can move up the chain.

How do you like the Mark Levinson (ML) and Pass Labs (PL) combo?

Happy Listening!
ok guys, 2 out of 3 emotiva amps have been sold. Only one remains. as i stated above, they are one amazing bang for the $. i can't think of a better amplifier under one thousand dollars.
Also, i may be listing my monitor audio platinum series 2 set up:
1. Monitor Audio Platinum Pl300ii
2. Monitor Audio Platinum PlC350ii center
3. Matching monitor audio stand
4. Monitor Audio GOLD FX rears

i am still not 100% certain what i will do, but i am just putting it out there that i am right now contemplating the sale of these items and would prefer one person that can take everything as a package deal.
I will say it again, as far as home theater is concerned, i have NOT HEARD anything REMOTELY CLOSE to this set up. Amazing is not even a word that accurately describes how good it is. Far superior than anything else i have owned (dynaudio confidence home theater, revel salon set up, etc). These speakers are outstanding and beyond better than the original series 1. This is just a complete new animal in many ways.
Ok, so i know many of you follow my thread here and i spent my entire saturday looking through some of the stuff that i need to sell.
You can check my listings and message me if you have any questions.
In addition to this, i also have a couple of items that i have not listed, but i am thinking of selling which include:

1. Classe Sigma SSP processor with upgraded 4k board. This is one good sounding processor that is superior to the CLASSE SSP800 that i owned. Very detailed, and with the upgraded 4k board plus Dolby Atmos on board, you are completely worry free.

2. Sonus Faber Olympica 1 Speakers in black gloss without boxes

3. REL S5 SHO home theater subwoofer in black gloss

4. Emotiva SA250 power amplifiers (3 of them) : Read my review on here about this amp. I keep saying that this is the best stereo amp to come out of Emotiva. I prefer it over the Parasound Halo A21. I have used it with my Mark Levinson no52 preamp and i was really impressed.

Again, if you got any questions about everything that i am selling, please message me. I know some of you that follow my thread have bought equipment from me so they can vouch for me.
thanks guys !
when it comes to Ayre products, i have not had the chance to hear it because my connections do not carry it. Ayre tends to have decent resale value, but i do believe they are a bit overpriced. i heard great things about this brand, but no i have not had the chance to own it.
i also have not heard Magtech amplifiers, but based on my findings they seem to be great for electrostatics.
As some of you might know, i parted ways with my Martin logan Renaissance speakers and made a move to the monitor audio platinum series 2. i have a full monitor audio set up and i am happy to report that when it comes to home theater, i have not heard anything that can best it. It sounds so clean, crisp, clear and detailed that it is almost impossible to think that you can improve upon this. i have rotated different amplifiers with these speakers and they sound great regardless of what you throw at them.
With that said, i am making my move to some b&w d3 speakers in the next coming weeks and will use my full classe audio amplifier set up so i might be selling my monitor audio set up. Remember, i make moves with my own gear in order to finance my next purchase which sometimes does not necessarily mean that it is an improvement. It is just my curiosity to try something that i was offered at a good deal.
As far as the 2301's with the 800d2s, yes they should have no issue driving them AS LONG AS YOU DON'T PLAN TO LISTEN AT LOUD LEVELS. The 800d2 is a very power hungry speaker so keep that in mind.
As far as preamp, yes i have owned the c1100 preamp and it is indeed the best mcintosh preamp in my opinion. That said, the Mark Levinson no52 which i currently own demolished the c1100. I have said this many times that right now the best preamp i have heard was/is the Mark Levinson no52. The only reason why i have mine listed is because i want to try the Pass labs XS preamp. If the xs preamplifier does not do it for me then i will return back to the no52.
Zaks,
please report back here on this thread once you have fired up the Odeon. Please let it be on for about 30 min before you do critical listening. You'll finally see and hear why I said that's the Best multichannel amp hands down.
Whitecamaross,

thanks a lot for all your input! I learn from reading your reviews.
I have a few questions that maybe you Can help me with:
- i have a set of B&W800 d2 and are seriously thinking about buying a pair of mc2301 like you had. I mainly listen to jazz and not at full power. Would they compliment each other cause i have not had a chance to hear the mc2301 yet. If so what preamp would you match it with? Did you have a chance to hear the C1100 c/t from Mcintosh? My sources are vinyl from Rega Rp10 and digital from a Lumin.
and last, since im not parting with my B&W's cause i love them and the design (obviously my wife is of another opinion), what cables compliment Best B&W/Mcintosh?

thanks in advance
Whitecamaross, thanks for your reporting.  Can you offer your thoughts on the following:

1) I know you have commented on resale values of Ayre, but I would appreciate your thoughts on sound quality if you have an opportunity to hear the Twenty series.

2) Have you heard Magtech?

3) Can you describe the sound quality differences between your MartinLogan and Monitor Audio Loudspeakers?  Why did you trade the former for the latter?

Thanks, again.
Just received an upgraded Plinius Odeon on a pallet today, and I will hook it up this weekend.  Looking forward to listening to it!

Special thanks to whitecamaross for this thread and for the PM's!

Dave
I already commented on the BHK 300 Mono blocks, (I’m a nyc dealer) but I wanted add something I feel is important.

I just had to opportunity to swap out the stock tubes for some NOS. This is a major benefit of the amp design that is not to be overlooked. (The stereo 250 also benefits equally from what I've read).

I’ve only had 2 hours of listening on the new tubes, so perhaps they are not fully broken in, but I’m hearing a significant improvement in several important aspects including tone, sweetness, clarity, freedom of imaging (I haven’t fully evaluated bass impact.

To my ear this amp highlights the best each technology (tube and SS) has to offer. I’ve never heard the TAD’S sound better.

Even if one can afford more expensive amps, I really think sonic improvement will come from putting the extra cash elsewhere in the system.
Excellent amp. Good choice. If one day you have the chance to hear the xs pass amps, make sure you bring your wallet because you won't want to leave without them.
I agree with your thoughts on the Pass Labs x250.8.  I'm currently using this amp and will not change it out for anything.  I had an x250 some years back, but stupidly sold it trying to downsize.  Never should have tried that.  Getting back to Pass I went through Musical Fidelity (no oomph), McCormack DNA-1 which I liked a lot, but was still not where I wanted to be.  Got a set of Classe mono blocks that were again, good, but still not there.  Finally quit trying others when I knew what I wanted and got the x250.8.  I'm back to being happy again.
I have owned all sorts of processors. Bryston sp3, classs ssp800, marantz 8802, anthem avm60, anthen d2, McIntosh mx122, McIntosh mx160, McIntosh mx151, and currently have the classe sigma ssp. All are great processors but the McIntosh mx160 and bryston sp3 are above the rest.
As far as amps for monitor audio, I love the smoothness from classe.l, mark Levinson and simaudio. Pass sounds good with it of course. I like what these speakers do for the money. The home theater experience is outstanding with them. The only thing I can say is that you need be careful matching amps with these speakers. They can sound shouty at loud volumes if you have bright amps lIke krell for example. I think smooth amps like rowland, classe and simaudio are perfect for these speakers and probably even a tad better than pass Labs.
I had someone message me wanting to do an even trade with my xs150s and his Rowland 925s but I simply couldn't. Although Rowland is good for sure, anytime im dealing with this kind of equipment, I think of the time when I'll have part ways with it. I don't want to sit on it for a
year. Pass Labs will always have more traction than Rowland as far as selling on the used market.
For now, the biggest bang for the $ in terms of speakers are these platinums. However, regardless of how much I love a component, I move on. I sold my Martin Logan renaissance speakers and I loved them. They destroyed anything else I've owned and yes they are the best speaker under 35k.
Next week I'll be playing with some 803d3s which I didn't like when I first heard them about 4 months ago. That said, I have a better front end than the dealer had. I expect them to sing with these pass amps and preamp.
I don't plan on selling the platinums unless something else sounds better to my ears. I highly doubt that it will be easy to find.
jrunr,
I drive my Monitor Audio PL500 IIs with a Jeff Rowland 625 S2 amplifier and love it...my room is 20' x 26'. That being said, "I don't know, what I don't know", meaning I haven't compared Classe or Pass to my 625 S2, so I can't say I prefer it over either one of them.
As far driving the series II with amps below $10K...prior to the 625 S2 I used a Jeff Rowland Continuum S2 integrated amp, which list for $10K.
What is the best amp pairing with the Monitor Audio series II speakers?  The Pass or the Classe?  Also, do you think these could be driven "as well" be amps that don't cost in excess of $10K?

For your HT use, what processor are you liking best?

Gold fx rears which is what the manual says to use. The series 2 as a whole is far superior than series one. I've owned series one and I liked them but not enough to keep. The series 2 blew me away. Very good and big soundstage. If I wasn't into trying stuff out, I'd be happy keeping these speakers for a long time. I think these platinums are the speaker to beat under 15k. Good finish and smooth sound. I really like what they are all about.
I just purchased a pair of b&w 803d3s which are 17k. I will receive them in about a week and will break them in to see how they sound against these monitor audios. I still think they won't keep up with these platinums.
What Monitor Audio RX model to you use for rears. How much better is the new PLC350 II compared to the series I?
i heard from a couple of credible sources that it is a good sounding speaker and i believe it is. That said, i also heard the new confidence line will be released at the end of the year and that has me really thinking. I may just wait and buy those instead.
So far, my set up is as follows:

Monitor Audio PL300ii
Monitor audio PLC350ii

My home theater experience has been elevated to new heights after doing a full monitor audio platinum set up. i am very shocked at how good this new generation is. Having owned the old platinum series, i can tell you that this new series is amazing to say the least. i still don’t understand why there is no love for it. It is a hard speaker to beat for the money. i prefer these platinums 300ii over the sonus olympicas 3s. It is not even a contest here.
i feel the only reason why many people buy sonus faber is because they are really good looking speakers. that is about it.

That will be an interesting comparison. Both highly regarded. The new Dyn is getting some good press.
Looking to try the new Dynaudio contour 60s this coming weekend vs my monitor audio platinum 300ii. It will be interesting for sure.
I'm glad you find my thread interesting. To those of you who have reach out me because of this thread, I hope you are all enjoying my multiple recommendations. I really enjoy this journey and although at times I get frustrated because I'm never content due to the constant switching of units, I'm assuming this would apply to most hobbies.
That said, some of you have reached out to me about your interest in my xs150s pass Labs. I am not per say interested in parting ways with them BUT if the right offer is made then sure I am open to letting them go. As some of you know, these retail for 65k and no dealer that I know stocks these amps for a demo so you have to pretty much by them outright. Dealer cost on these amps is $39,000 dollars plus whatever the selling dealer wants to make on top. I do however understand that this is a lot of money for some people so I could be open to taking in some amplifiers plus cash on top in order to facilitate this deal. I would be interested mainly in other pass labs amps, mark Levinson 536s monos, dan agostino momentums, and amps of this caliber. However, I am NOT interested in an even trade or just simply swapping gear. I would need cash on top. Please note, this is ONLY AN IDEA at this time so I am not 100% sure I want to do this just yet.
Totally enjoyed this thread! BIG THX to @whitecamaross

Now looking for another Simaudio W8 so that I can use them as mono blocks, there is something to the more clean power the better. The investment is worth it, also quality will always have resale.

not 100% sure about the W8 and the 860...same design? I figure they must be damn close.

cheers all
Thanks John.  Reading comments like yours makes this thread all worth it to me. I spend time here and share MY EXPERIENCE with amplifiers and certain speakers from time to time. I love to see how the law of diminishing returns kicks in after a certain price point. I've seen that the best bang for the buck for amplifiers is in the 4k-9k range. That's where most of the best amps I've owned lie. I will say once you go over the 10k price point you start to see the diminishing effect. I love my xs pass labs amps, but see they worth 4 times as much as my Classé cam600s? No they're not. The sound isn't 4 times better or 400% better.
I have someone wanting to trade me some Jeff Rowland 925s for my pass labs xs150 but I'm not 100% sure. Remember, I want to keep going with this hobby so I have to carefully select my amps and think about the marketability of it so I don't get stuck with them. Brands like Magnus audio really make me curious but that's an amp that will be hard to sell once I'm done with it.
In order to stay On top, you just only stick to brands that have a following. Yes, this means that there will be a lot of brands that will never make it in my room but im ok with that.
What an amazing catalogue of amp reviews. Phenomenal enlightenment. Timely as I recently read a review of Mark Levinson 526 preamp. You might consider it as a preamp option. I'd like to try Mola Mola Kaluga Class D, small highly efficient and powerful. Crventura of YouTube's endgame amp. Now I turn my attention to Pass Labs and SimAudio thanks to you. Your frank and quick analysis is a great first cut review mate. Really appreciate your transparency and story telling.

Certainly, a $5K power cord (PC) has its place. There must be total system synergy for it to pay-off (no pun).  Every system does not require such high-cost cabling, however, some systems do. The choice is yours.

Next up, Classe Audio CAM-600 mono blocks:
These are some serious monsters. They posses almost limitless power reserves and run very cool regardless of how hard you push them. I can't hear the cooling fans at all even after cranking them up for long periods of time. These monos have a level of smoothness that would match those speakers that are too bright sounding or forward sounding such as Paradigm, klipsch, etc.
Today i am going to be using a pass labs xp20 preamplifier to see what this will do to these monos and my pass xs150 monos.
The classe audio cam600 is THE BEST amp to come out of classe audio. Having owned the cam300s before, this is far superior in many ways. Again, if you are looking to smooth out your current set up and need to tame those high frequencies a bit, this amp will do the trick while still being detailed.
I agree. i have tried other high end brands and i honestly can't hear a difference. To me, spending a lot of money on cables is really a big mistake. First off, when you try to sell them after you are done with them, you will take a bath trying to sell them. You will be lucky if you can recuperate 25% of the value. That said, there are plenty of people who spend 5,000 dollars on a power cord!  which i think is ridiculous.
Very nice! whitecamaross

I liked the Wireworld Electra7 power cord (PC).
I have not spent any time w/ the interconnects (IC).

I use a Silver Starlight 5.2 HDMI cable in my video system. It is only bettered by the Platinum model.

Happy Listening!
Guys,
there is a fellow audiophile friend of mine who came to my home and heard my renaissance and fell in complete love with them. He liked them so much that he ended up buying a pair, but when they were delivered to his house the wife began to complain about their size, etc and so he decided to sell them before he opened them and not begin an argument with her.  They are listed on ebay and i can vouch for them. Again, read my reviews above, i find this is THE BEST speaker under 35k dollars BY FAR. It smoked my sonus amati futuras, revel salon 2s, Dynaudio C4 Platinums, etc. This is THE BEST sounding speaker i have heard and before i bought them i went around listening to a ton of speakers such as magicos, rockports, wilson audios, etc and NOTHING outperformed these Renaissance electrostatics.
If you are interested, please feel free to reach out to me. As mentioned above, they are currently listed on ebay. He also has the MASSIVE and newly released center channel Martin Logan illusion. Both speakers are in black gloss.

i am using wireworld eclipse 7. I have used nordost and cardas as well and i felt wireworld clables are my cup of tea.
