My Long List of Amplifiers and My Personal Review of Each!

So I have been in a long journey looking to find the best amplifiers for my martin logan montis. As you know, the match between an amplifier and speakers has to be a good "marriage" and needs to be blend exquisitely. Right now, I think I might have found the best sounding amplifier for martin logan. I have gone through approximately 34-36 amplifiers in the past 12 months. Some of these are:

Bryston ST, SST, SST2 series
NAD M25
PARASOUND HALO
PARASOUND CLASSIC
KRELL TAS
KRELL KAV 500
KRELL CHORUS
ROTEL RMB 1095
CLASSE CT 5300
CLASSE CA 2200
CLASSE CA 5200
MCINTOSH MC 205
CARY AUDIO CINEMA 7
OUTLAW AUDIO 755
LEXICON RX7
PASS LABS XA 30.8
BUTLER AUDIO 5150
ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005

With all that said, the amplifiers I mentioned above are the ones that in my opinion are worth mentioning. To make a long story short, there is NO 5 CHANNEL POWER AMP that sounds as good as a 3ch and 2ch amplifier combination. i have done both experiments and the truth is that YOU DO lose details and more channel separation, etc when you select a 5 channel power amplifier of any manufacturer.
My recollection of what each amp sounded like is as follows:

ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005 (great power and amazing soundstage. Very low noise floor, BUT this amplifiers NEEDS TO BE cranked up in order to fully enjoy it. If you like listening at low volume levels or somewhat moderate, you are wasting your time here. This amp won’t sound any different than many other brands out there at this volume. The bass is great, good highs although they are a bit bright for my taste)

NAD M25 (very smooth, powerful, but somewhat thin sounding as far as bass goes)
Bryston sst2(detailed, good soundstage, good power, but can be a little forward with certain speakers which could make them ear fatiguing at loud volumes)

Krell (fast sounding, nice bass attack, nice highs, but some detail does get lost with certain speakers)

rotel (good amp for the money, but too bright in my opinion)

cary audio (good sound overall, very musical, but it didn’t have enough oomph)

parasound halo (good detail, great bass, but it still holds back some background detail that i can hear in others)

lexicon (very laid back and smooth. huge power, but if you like more detail or crisper highs, this amp will disappoint you)

McIntosh mc205 (probably the worst multichannel amp given its price point. it was too thin sounding, had detail but lacked bass.

butler audio (good amplifier. very warm and smooth sweet sounding. i think for the money, this is a better amp than the parasound a51)

pass labs (very VERY musical with excellent bass control. You can listen to this for hours and hours without getting ear fatigue. however, it DOES NOT do well in home theater applications if all you have is a 2 channel set up for movies. The midrange gets somewhat "muddy" or very weak sounding that you find yourself trying to turn it up.

classe audio (best amplifier for multi channel applications. i simply COULDNT FIND a better multi channel amplifier PERIOD. IT has amazing smoothness, amazing power and good bass control although i would say krell has much better bass control)

Update: The reviews above were done in January 2015. Below is my newest update as of October 2016:

PS AUDIO BHK 300 MONOBLOCKS: Amazing amps. Tons of detail and really amazing midrange. the bass is amazing too, but the one thing i will say is that those of you with speakers efficiency of 87db and below you will not have all the "loudness" that you may want from time to time. These amps go into protection mode when using a speaker such as the Salon, but only at very loud levels. Maybe 97db and above. If you don’t listen to extreme crazy levels, these amps will please you in every way.

Plinius Odeon 7 channel amp: This is THE BEST multichannel amp i have ever owned. Far , but FAR SUPERIOR to any other multichannel amp i have owned. In my opinion it destroyed all of the multichannel amps i mentioned above and below. The Odeon is an amp that is in a different tier group and it is in a league of its own. Amazing bass, treble and it made my center channel sound more articulate than ever before. The voices where never scrambled with the action scenes. It just separated everything very nicely.

Theta Dreadnaught D: Good detailed amp. Looks very elegant, has a pleasant sound, but i found it a tad too bright for my taste. I thought it was also somewhat "thin" sounding lacking body to the music. could be that it is because it is class d?

Krell Duo 300: Good amp. Nice and detailed with enough power to handle most speakers out there. I found that it does have a very nice "3d" sound through my electrostatics. Nothing to fault here on this amp.
Mark Levinson 532H: Great 2 channel amp. Lots of detail, amazing midrange which is what Mark Levinson is known for. It sounds very holographic and will please those of you looking for more detail and a better midrange. As far as bass, it is there, but it is not going to give you the slam of a pass labs 350.5 or JC1s for example. It is great for those that appreciate classical music, instrumental, etc, but not those of you who love tons of deep bass.

 It is articulate sounding too
Krell 7200: Plenty of detail and enough power for most people. i found that my rear speakers contained more information after installed this amp. One thing that i hated is that you must use xlr cables with this amp or else you lose most of its sound performance when using RCA’s.

Krell 402e: Great amp. Very powerful and will handle any speaker you wish. Power is incredible and with great detail. That said, i didn’t get all the bass that most reviewers mentioned. I thought it was "ok" in regards to bass. It was there, but it didn’t slam me to my listening chair.

Bryston 4B3: Good amp with a complete sound. I think this amp is more laid back than the SST2 version. I think those of you who found the SST2 version of this amp a little too forward with your speakers will definitely benefit from this amp’s warmth. Bryston has gone towards the "warm" side in my opinion with their new SST3 series. As always, they are built like tanks. I wouldn’t call this amp tube-like, but rather closer to what the classe audio delta 2 series sound like which is on the warm side of things.

Parasound JC1s: Good powerful amps. Amazing low end punch (far superior bass than the 402e). This amp is the amp that i consider complete from top to bottom in regards to sound. Nothing is lacking other than perhaps a nicer chassis. Parasound needs to rework their external appearance when they introduce new amps. This amp would sell much more if it had a revised external appearance because the sound is a great bang for the money. It made my 800 Nautilus scream and slam. Again, amazing low end punch.

Simaudio W7: Good detailed amp. This amp reminds me a lot of the Mark Levinson 532h. Great detail and very articulate. I think this amp will go well with bookshelves that are ported in order to compensate for what it lacks when it comes to the bass. That doesn’t mean it has no bass, but when it is no Parasound JC1 either.
Pass labs 350.5: Wow, where do i begin? maybe my first time around with the xa30.8 wasn’t as special as it was with this monster 350.5. It is just SPECTACULAR sounding with my electrostatics. The bass was THE BEST BASS i have ever heard from ANY amp period. The only amp that comes close would be the jC1s. It made me check my settings to make sure the bass was not boosted and kept making my jaw drop each time i heard it. It totally destroyed the krell 402e in every regard. The krell sounded too "flat" when compared to this amp. This amp had amazing mirange with great detail up top. In my opinion, this amp is the best bang for the money. i loved this amp so much that i ended up buying the amp that follows below.

Pass labs 250.8: What can i say here. This is THE BEST STEREO AMP i have ever heard. This amp destroys all the amps i have listed above today to include the pass labs 350.5. It is a refined 350.5 amp. It has more 3d sound which is something the 350.5 lacked. It has a level of detail that i really have never experienced before and the bass was amazing as well. I really thought it was the most complete power amplifier i have ever heard HANDS DOWN. To me, this is a benchmark of an amplifier. This is the amp that others should be judged by. NOTHING is lacking and right now it is the #1 amplifier that i have ever owned.

My current amps are Mcintosh MC601s: i decided to give these 601s a try and they don’t disappoint. They have great detail, HUGE soundstage, MASSIVE power and great midrange/highs. The bass is great, but it is no pass labs 250.8 or 350.5. As far as looks, these are the best looking amps i have ever owned. No contest there. i gotta be honest with you all, i never bought mcintosh monos before because i wasn’t really "wowed" by the mc452, but it could have been also because at that time i was using a processor as a preamp which i no longer do. Today, i own the Mcintosh C1100 2 chassis tube preamp which sounds unbelievable. All the amps i just described above have been amps that i auditioned with the C1100 as a preamp. The MC601s sound great without a doubt, but i will say that if you are looking for THE BEST sound for the money, these would not be it. However, Mcintosh remains UNMATCHED when it comes to looks and also resale value. Every other amp above depreciates much faster than Mcintosh.

That said, my future purchase (when i can find a steal of a deal) will be the Pass labs 350.8. I am tempted to make a preliminary statement which is that i feel this amp could be THE BEST stereo amp under 30k dollars. Again, i will be able to say more and confirm once i own it. I hope this update can help you all in your buying decisions!

@jays_audio_lab Bumping a previous post here, how is the Furutech outlet playing in your system now, did burn in help and turn it around?

@divertiti

So I think the furutech is broken in... It took roughly 500 hours.

Very nice improvement for sure.

Ok guys, the video of the vac preamp and Gryphon amp will be released tomorrow. I have 3 songs total but I will release one song tomorrow. I think you will like what you hear very much.

Interesting, I often use Medium, especially late at night, which sounds quite good to my ears, but never tried Low. I think the manual says it is just for keeping the amp ready for listening without initial warm-up. Does it sound as good as Medium or High setting?

You can do excellent grounding and AC filtering for way less money than the Nordost stuff......Just doing the grounding stuff recommended in the below link would probably blow your mind.  The grounding stuff is a separate grounding rod you install just for your stereo, the Puritan Ground Master filter, and a bunch of wires to connect each component to the Puritan line filter.  All under $500 total.  The Puritan line filter......less than $2K for the 156 version is raved about in this thread and can be used in conjunction with all the above grounding thangs......my friend is doing all the above in his stereo but starts off with a 3000 watt battery powered low distortion inverter in front of it all......super dead quiet and transparent.....mind blowing.  The whole enchilada for the Puritan Line filter 256, the Ground master, the ground rod, installation (if you cannot put in a rod on your own)......would be less than $3K.

Thanks for pulling this together. Of seven-channel amps that you've tried and that are currently in production, would you say that the Krell Chorus 7200 is the best? Only other amp that seems in the running would be the ATI Signature Series 6007. Would like to avoid Class D.

I note the Plinius Odeon has long since been discontinued.

Take 2 is much much better than take 1,I think it is the different on record way.

and this demonstrate that what we hear  largely depends on the record method.

It would be very difficult for me to let this grouping of components and speakers go....excellent system synergy.

Just plain fantastic!  Perhaps you will hold onto this system and use as a reference? Would be a worthy system!

Catching up and enjoyed the Qkore review as well. Been enjoying its impact on my system for awhile now but it sounds like it may be worth trying 2 premium cables over the standards. I have heard some Nordost dealers say it isn't necessarily worth the price, but as you say, if it gives you more of what the Qkore does....

I have opportunity to test Mark Levinson 536 against Krell FPB 600, Pass Lab X350.8, Benchmark AHB2, and NAD C298.

They are driving my B&W 802D3.

They all sounds good and each have their own signature.

ML 536 has the best dynamic, details and holographic soundstage for playing loud classical music

Krell FPB has the most bass weight, details and soundstage lacking compare to 536

Pass Lab X350.8 very similar to ML 536 but less dynamic and life like details...ML 536 will reproduce close mic recording of piano or trumpet as if you hear the real instrument with the "bite" that make you think you hear the real life instrument if you close your eyes.

AHB2 good overall value , lacking in bass punch and soundstage details by comparison

NAD C298 very good value, lacking in bass weight , soundstage and details transparency by comparison.

asin,

Thanks.  At low/moderate SPL, how do the ML 536 and AHB2 compare for detail, resolution and bite of classical music?   My experience with AHB2 is it is strong in subtleties but weak in power dynamics.

Though it’s a poor man’s system by comparison, I can absolutely agree the VAC Master preamp makes for an EPIC pairing to a clean SS amp. The VAC Master pre paired with matching VAC power amp (200iQ’s in my case) sounds more beautiful than any other combo I’ve tried on most music, but falls a bit short for high-adrenaline heavy metal and hard rock with a fast & heavy beat. But either VAC component, paired with another brand’s very clean sounding complementary component (e.g. ARC Ref 6 pre or Phison A2.120SE amp), does just fine with heavy metal! I’ve been driving myself crazy with amp swaps the past few months 😅

I see Jay chooses very NOT metal material for his videos :)

WC - I see what you mean, when you described the system in a previous video.   It does sound really good.

I plan to try that at some point. That said, I can't really evaluate amplifiers if I biamp speakers with different amps. In his system, it's good because he doesn't do what I do. He has a reference system that he has built by doing a lot of tweaks which includes a magnepan tweeter on his speakers.

As you said Jay, these systems are on opposites of the spectrum, if not polar opposites.  Very cool u both had a chance to experience such incredible systems in their own right.

Mike has the speakers very very far apart (maybe like 12 feet?) and the adjustability of the entire system is great too. I liked the way things sounded which you will get to hear on the video i shot at this place. I can appreciate ANY SYSTEM that sounds great regardless of the money spent. I am sure that many of you have systems that kick ass and yet only cost about 10% of what i have in mine.

Hopefully this video with MIkey has shown you all that for me it is not about dumping a ton of money into a system and that this is the only way to get things to sound right. I am simply playing with components that yes, they are out of reach for many but i remain objective. I even voted the Joseph Audio room the best room at CAF 2021 and there were rooms with systems costing far more money there.

Ultimately, i would like for all of you to understand that the fact that i am playing with this level of gear is EXACTLY what makes me valuable because if i came into your house TODAY, heard your affordable system that you have put together by working your @ss off and was blown away, wouldn’t that make you say: "wow, this compliment is coming from a guy who has had just about EVERYTHING and who plays with some of the best stuff out there and yet he is highly impressed by what i have put together in here".

Wouldn’t that feel good for you?  I want for the guy who owns the Ferraris and Lambos to praise my Turbo Honda Civic after he takes it for a test drive. You want people with greater reference points to be that extra set of ears because your goal should be to aspire to make things even better (assuming your budget allows).

I have said it before, and i will repeat it again: If something sounds damn good, i will be vocal about how good it sounds regardless of price. Please, erase that idea from your head that if i came over to hear your system that I probably wouldn't like it because it is not as expensive as mine. This is BS and hopefully you all now have a greater appreciation for what I am doing. I am not doing this to be cheerleader for the ultra high end (although that is for the most part what i have been presenting on my channel). I am here to be vocal about ANYTHING that impresses me so next time I am in your neck of the woods and you want my honest opinion (yes i will be real with you about how i feel about your system), feel free to let me know.

Thanks guys for the love and the support !

Jay

WC,

Just wanted to add that I appreciate your honest impressions in the videos with Mikey, and your car comparison is a great analogy.  The discussion with you and Mikey about Consulting Services will hopefully be helpful going forward.   Consulting ends up costing less overall, because the money spent on consulting is much less than the money lost on the equipment merry go round - which most of the time is inevitable without an Expert.

Jay,

Hopefully you can discuss with Mikey why he has the bass cabinets in the middle and the panels on the extreme sides.  When I had the huge Maggie Tympani's, I placed the HF units in the center closer to each other than the bass panels which were on the outside.  I think I remember when you had the Maggie 3.7i and 20.7, you had the ribbon tweeters on the inside.  He has the panels very far apart, but it only takes a few feet to obtain excellent separation and spatiality.  The big disadvantage of very wide separation is blurring and bloating of most instruments in midrange/HF, although at first the huge soundstage is tantalizing.

Visually, his arrangement makes sense--otherwise the huge panels would destroy the beauty of the room.  If the bass cabinets were on the sides, the bass might be too loose and uncontrolled.

McIntosh seems to elicit various responses with a’philes...some love it, some hate it...BUT their vintage tube gear is still very well thought of, and IMO for very good reason.

Jay states that McIntosh could come out with a SOTA product if they wanted to, they have the chops to do so. Then he asks that all manufacturer’s work towards pushing the envelope, except he already gave a perfectly good reason why McIntosh should not be doing that, and in fact does not/ will not do that. Hmm.😃

Part 3 of Mikey's system is superb.  From my computer, I can't judge soundstage, spatiality, but only tone quality.  The 2nd song, Dire Straits' Private Investigations I learned and heard many times on Jay's Wilsons and enjoyed it.  But these Arion ribbon speakers show what uncolored, lifelike tonal quality is all about.  The voice and soft guitar at the beginning are delicate, natural.  Although the XLF and Focal Maestro's are at the top of the dynamic speaker class, the colorations of dynamic box speakers are evident when compared to the Arion ribbon drivers.  Although the electronics are different, and Mikey is to be commended for his dedicated setup, the essential differences between dynamic and ribbon speakers are still there.   The GTA and Arion speakers rival each other for this special tonal quality.

Good video Jay.  Never owned McIntosh gear but totally respect the brand.  Every reviewer has their own way of expressing their thoughts on products.  Never cared for reviewers that bash gear.   I appreciate the 'pros and cons, and room for improvement suggestions' style you have developed for reviewing gear.

Krell 300i Integrated has arrived today and it is going through the motions. Stay tuned to find out if this unit is any good.

Correction to my last post about Mikey's system.  His main speakers are from Analysis Audio, not Arion.  I like his customized add-ons with the extra ribbon tweeter and Townshend Audio tweeter.  This restores the brilliance of the HF which I felt was missing from similar looking Apogee designs.  I considered the Townshend in place of my Enigmacoustics tweeter.  The advantage of the Townshend is much higher impedance than the Enigmacoustics, which doesn't strain the amp as much as my Enigma.  I use the Enigma time aligned with my main electrostatic panels, firing forward.

Great job with great sound, Mikey.

Hey that’s cool to have the little krell integrated. Will be interesting to hear how you rate it versus the Pass Labs Int 60 and Luxman integrateds that you’ve had.

yysantabarbara has this krell and likes it

i doubt you’ll get it but the 95th anniversary Luxman 595ase integrated is supposed to be a lot better than the 590axii that you rated the best amp under $12k earlier

Grab an L509X and a Int 60 and an 866 and an Edge A and do a 5-way shootout!!
