Modern Fusion - worth a Listen - Aaron Parks

For those of you that listened to Fusion back in the 70's and 80's and maybe have migrated to more traditional jazz,
here is an Artist / Album I stumbled on in Tidal.

Aaron Parks - Little Big.

I like it a lot - maybe you will too.

Little Big II: Dreams of a Mechanical Man - Aaron Parks

Is now on Tidal - first few tracks are pretty mellow.

Sounds nice!
More regarding Aaron Parks: He announced the release of Little Big II. Same musicians as on the first Little Big. Available on Bandcamp.

Another good recording with Aaron Parks is 2018's "Ask for Chaos" by Gilad Hekselman. Parks plays on 5 of the 10 cuts. Obvious Holdsworth fan.

Brand new. Less Fusion, more Sunday morning, but still real good.

Mighta been wrong to have called him guest (as above).  He features on CAB 1, 2, & 4

CAB 4 (2003)
dennis Chambers - drums
tony macAlpine - guitar
bunny Brunel - bass

w/Brian Auger & Patrice Rushen guesting on keyboards.

Check out CAB albums 1 & 2, as well.  There is no '3'.
Here’s a new one

Jazz Sabbath (Just released)

Not quite Fusion not quite pure Jazz.
Instrumental versions of Black Sabbath songs as I understand it.

Strange story behind it with a twist too. Worth a listen for sure.

A band that inexplicably didn't get the attention it should've has always been Tribal Tech.  Individually and collectively, these all-stars have been creating outstanding contemporary fusion for decades!  Within the last few years, founding members Gary Willis (bass phenom!) and keyboard player Scott Kinsey have released some of the greatest fusion records of the 21st century!
Gary Willis - Larger Than Life (featuring the white-hot drummer of the decade; Gergo Borlai!
Scott Kinsey - We Speak Luniwaz - The music if Joe Zawinul (also feat. drummer G. Borlai).  ALL fans of Weather Report should own this!

Incredible music played by incredible musicians!  And never forget, Fusion sounds best when the volume's cranked!;)  You'd have a sizable amount of great fusion records if you were into Tribal Tech, Scott Kinsey, Gary Willis, and Scott Henderson,  lemmetellya!
Chick Corea - The Vigil (2013)

An extended live version of track 2, Planet Chia, here....
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYF37fTtPWE

Excellent musicianship all around; in particular, soprano sax by Tim Garland (Garland also on Bruford's Earthworks recordings) and an amazing upright bass solo from Christian McBride.  To jump ahead to McBride's solo go to 12:30.

When listening to the studio album, sensitive ears might want to skip track 5.  You'll know why if you don't.

Again thanks for the reminder.
I have that album, bought because of Phil Collins but soon discovered it was much better than just that reasoning.
Time to pull it out and give it a good clean and take it for a spin.

Was just returning to edit my post in order to say, "Thanks for the tip". Indeed, THANKS. Haven’t tried Qobuz yet. No Roon either. Using Auralic’s Lightning app to manage ripped CDs and on-line streaming. Seems entirely satisfactory.  Happily, did find Show Me in Tidal. Will be listening next after the Yellow-jackets’ Timeline finishes up.

Hello @tvad - I've spent some time exploring Steve Smith mainly with Vital Information (Gambale, Tom Coster (keys), Baron Browne (bass).

Did not recognize the "Show Me...." title.  Will have to see if I can find it for streaming.

In the meantime, you might enjoy Smith's slightly later, "Come On In" (2004) also with Gambale.

Not sure it’s fusion. Doesn’t much matter. Great music from Mike Mainieri and company circa 2006.

Great soloing over a silky, atmospheric groove on track 8, "Bang", from Northern Lights.

I added that snarky puppy cut to my favorite list to listen to later.
thanks for the reminder

FWIW - It seems the aforementioned Jazz Pistols were/are fans too of Weather Report and Heavy Weather in particular.

They’ve covered Birdland, Teen Town, & Palladium on various of their studio albums and all three are included on their Jazz Pistols - Live recording.

Here’s their live Birdland.

So much great music stated above. I, too, am not sure how far we are going back, but Weather Report's " Heavy Weather ", played a significant role, with my intense lust for Jazz / Fusion. I was in the audio business when it was released, and it was a worthwhile demo album, for my clients. I still enjoy it, on remastered CD. Enjoy ! MrD.
@aniwolfe
Thanks for posting.  Sampled both.  The Donati, in particular, a tough listen.  Dave Holland's Prism a little friendlier to these ears but lost patience with the longish, slow paced intro.  Horses for courses....

Keep em coming Dougsat.
I check this thread regularly for ideas for new to me stuff.
As I do all the music threads tbh.

Glad to read the further comments about Simon Phillips. I wish I could credit the poster that first mentioned his Protocol recordings on a post to The Minority Report. Tried a search but did not find it.

Sounds like there is more to be gained by further exploration of SP's discography.

Great call on the Simon Phillips/Protocol series!  You mentioned II.  Guitarist Andy Timmons cont'd with the band and recorded III but for IV, Phillips brought in guitar-slinger Greg Howe!  Really well recorded and played, hard charging Fusion with a groove, Simon Phillips is a monsta!;)
Simon Phillips - Protocol II (2013)

Great stuff - compositions, musicianship and sound quality.

Simon Phillips - drums
Andy Timmons - guitar
Steve Weingart - keyboards
Ernest Tibbs - bass

Moffett has indeed been around for A while, Doug (though new to me)...over 30 years based on his discography.
He's on that Tony Williams Civilization recording which is what led me to him.

No expert on McBride.  I listened to Ham Hocks just now and enjoyed it.  Have you listened to Chick Corea's Trilogy?  Trio format as on Out Here.  McBride on Trilogy with Brian Blade as drummer.

Looking for higher energy than on Just Need Love?  Try the preceeding track:  For Those Who Know.

Charnett Moffett-

Now there is a name from the past. I remember seeing Mr, Moffett
in Philly at a free concert when he first hit the scene.
BTW - Nice mellow Live cut - "Just need Love"

Now that we are on the subject of bass players, how about a little
Christian McBride -   "Ham Hocks and Cabbage "

Trio Jazz but boy does it swing!

Music From Our Soul - Charnett Moffett (2017)

An interesting stew of live and studio performances with an equally interesting mix of musicians including at various times:  Pharoah Sanders, Stanley Jordan, Tain Watts, and Cyrus Chestnut.  It ain't all fusion (Tracks 3 & 4 being Mood Indigo & So What, respectively) but it's definitely modern.
