Lesser line with more shine than big brothers

Apologies for subject line. Interested in knowing if any less expensive models within  a brand did a better job than its better heeled brothers. Speakers, amps, past, present, anything is fair game. Hope I have presented this question properly.

I think it's safe to say that spending more within a brand almost always gets you more, but the best value is at or near the bottom, never the top.
I find it odd that Stereophile rates the Maggie LRS class B, and the .7 class C.

Smaller speakers often do better in an untreated room, so it's common in my mind that you could find some example of this.

Across lines, I've heard amps rated less power which sounded more powerful, but not within the same brand.
