Jazz for aficionados

Jazz for aficionados

I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.

Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".

"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.

While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

Enjoy the music.

I’m listening to Kinda Blue for the umteenth time and it still puts a smile on my face.

Funny you should say that about KOB. This past weekend I listened to it from start to finish for the first time ever. The SACD.

Cheers

@rok2id

How did you Kind Of Blue? I have it on LP and CD and as I said before, listening to it makes me 😊.

@curiousjim

I love it.  No filler, every track awesome.  I also have it on LP from back in the day.

I bought it on CD and then got the SACD version.  I also bought a second red book version (not needed),  from Best Buy.  It just irritated me that this great music was being sold for 8 dollars, right next to 20 dollar noise makers, and it was the last one on the shelf.

Cheers

Glad you have come around to appreciate the greatness of KOB. Incredibly important recording; a real game changer. I remember the disputes here over KOB and the dismissal of it simply because it has become an audiophile fave. I’ll take my chances with those libel laws, but maybe you are a closet audiophile after all 😊.

All in good fun.

Glad you have come around to appreciate the greatness of KOB.

I always did, I just didn't want to get trampled by getting between you(KOB), and our illustrious OP(Somethin' Else).

Although certain albums can become too famous.  If the unwash loves it, surely an Aficionado should turn his nose up.  Sort of like audiophiles and CDs.

Cheers

Listening to Jeremy Pelt, Identity

Only listened to a couple of his albums so far, but I’m thinking that tonight is going to be a Jeremy Pelt night.

@curiousjim  Here is another Jeremy Pelt album that I like, in fact, it was here on these pages that first I've heard it

@alexatpos

If you like old school jazz, It’s really hard to go wrong listening to Jeremy Pelt. It’s funny, when I looked him up, I expected to read about some dead or very old guy and boy was I surprised to see he’s about twenty years younger than I am.😁

Outstanding! As far as I’m concerned, Hank Mobley is a very underrated player. When the subject of who the greatest tenor players are/were, Mobley is always outvoted by, of course, Coltrane, Rollins and Henderson. Putting style aside, when it comes to being able to telling a story, I don’t hear why he shouldn’t be alongside the “top three”.

Good one!  Actually, I can’t think of a bad Mobley record.  This one is a favorite; and with one of the best album titles ever:

Hey Alek and curious jim, big fan of the Talented Mr Pelt. Have seen him live as well as own all of his albums. A modern day great jazz trumpeter and composer/arranger.

Paul, I think it was your recomendation first, for that Pelt's album that I have posted above.

Frogman, yes, 'almost' (no hard feelings, just joking)...had to post this than...but to make things even more funny, I actually have this album as well...

Hey frogman I have all of the Mobley catalog and you cannot forget this one when discussing his best

Alex, well, like I said, I couldn’t think of a bad Mobley record.  There’s a good reason I couldn’t think of that one.  Some things are best forgotten 😊

Oh my!!!  Look at that lineup. Grandma's taking the Ferrari for a cruise.

Maybe it’s me.

Interaction on an Internet forum is necessarily very limited and the anonymity that is part of it all changes all the usual “rules” of human interaction. In spite of all that I find it odd, even a little disappointing, that O-10’s absence from this, his own thread, doesn’t get more attention. Interaction, including arguments and a bit of vitriol, over the span of more than a decade on a subject so personal as favorite music leads to some type of “relationship”, however limited.

We all know how passionate O-10 is about Jazz and I find it hard to believe that even if he has simply decided to distance himself from the thread for whatever reason, that he wouldn’t take a peak once in a while, at least, Concern has been expressed on several occasions and there has been no response from him. Considering that we know he had health issues, it is not unreasonable to worry about the seriousness of the reason he has disappeared. So, I propose that this serve as a message to O-10 to respond and let us know how he is doing. At the vey least, use it as an opportunity for long time contributors and newcomers alike to revive the thread in his honor. I truly hope that “honor” is an overstatement.

To get things rolling:

Freddie Hubbard was amazing. If forced to pick, I would probably pick him for “favorite trumpet player”. Great record that shows what a monster player he was. Incredibly inventive and great clarity in his improvisation:

Ref  our beloved OP.

He left in November 2021.  Maybe he is waiting for his 1st  Anniversary.  He has not shown up in the Obits.  The longest pouting session ever?  We could post and agree that SOMETHIN" ELSE is the worst Jazz album ever!!!  See what happens.

Cheers

The Ray Brown Trio - "Live at Scullers"

I'm not the biggest jazz fan ever, but I really like this album.

Can the label for which a Jazz player records be considered as just another manifestation of The Frogman's First law?

In order words, there is a good reason it's not Blue Note, Impulse, Riverside  etc.etc.

Cheers

Despite the Frogman's 'rule' I would say that one should always 'dig little deeper'.Argo label, aldo short lived (one decade) had some fine albums. Here is one from a guy who probably (judging by his obscurity) also falls under mentioned rule. The name of the song is pure coincidence...

On more serious side, another fine album, not yet released on cd, as far as I know. Argo label as well.

A strong case could be made for the idea that this law (“rule”) is itself, and in fact, “digging a little deeper”…unless shown otherwise 😊.

My example of one exception to the law; one of the great unsung players:

Ira Sullivan:

Should have out sourced the Album Cover Art to Blue Note.

Cheers

BTW, called the OP today and yesterday.  Answering machine both times.

Don’t disagree, but I’m sure you know it doesn’t work that way.  Gotta have a contract with BN first.  I do agree with your premise.

Another of O-10’s faves…..the true original version this time. Pepper, not Ronnie, O-10! 😊. You out there, O-10?

BTW, called the OP today and yesterday.  Answering machine both times

Hey rok have you been calling O10 periodically since his absence here started or just this recent call?

regretfully, I think frogman may be right that O10s health problem may have worsened. To what extent we all can only speculate but if he has not answered your call or calls (when he usually did answer?) has me thinking sad thoughts

I do hope he is ok and, all sarcasm aside, wish he would post some of his controversial (you call it noise, rok) non jazz music

frogman that 1962 Bill Evans album was re- released in 1982 titled The Interplay Sessions.

From Wiki

The Interplay Sessions is a 1982 Milestone album that includes the entirety of this album, and tracks recorded for Riverside on August 21 and 22 of the same year with a different lineup (with Zoot Sims and Ron Carter, and without Freddie Hubbard and Percy Heath). The Interplay Sessions peaked at number 26 on the Billboard Jazz Albums charts in 1983.[3] The CD reissue Interplay adds another take of "I'll Never Smile Again" as a bonus track. At the Grammy Awards of 1984Orrin Keepnews won the Grammy Award for Best Album

I added this to my Spotify library and am listening to it now. Great jazz!

Hey rok have you been calling O10 periodically since his absence here started or just this recent call?

The past few days have been the only times I have ever called him.  Including twice today.  The number came from google so I hope it's the correct number.  I assume an 80+ year old would be at home most of the time.

Cheers

@the frogman

the true original version this time. Pepper, not Ronnie

What's the Ronnie reference?
