Pharoah Sanders (R.I.P.)
Jazz for aficionados
I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.
Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.
The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".
"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.
While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.
Enjoy the music.
Dee Dee Bridgewater PRELUDE TO A KISS The Duke Ellington Album Philips 1996 An excellent concept that cries out for real Jazz Band backing. JALC?

I love it. No filler, every track awesome. I also have it on LP from back in the day. I bought it on CD and then got the SACD version. I also bought a second red book version (not needed), from Best Buy. It just irritated me that this great music was being sold for 8 dollars, right next to 20 dollar noise makers, and it was the last one on the shelf. Cheers |
Glad you have come around to appreciate the greatness of KOB. Incredibly important recording; a real game changer. I remember the disputes here over KOB and the dismissal of it simply because it has become an audiophile fave. I’ll take my chances with those libel laws, but maybe you are a closet audiophile after all 😊. All in good fun.

I always did, I just didn't want to get trampled by getting between you(KOB), and our illustrious OP(Somethin' Else). Although certain albums can become too famous. If the unwash loves it, surely an Aficionado should turn his nose up. Sort of like audiophiles and CDs. Cheers |
Nina Simone NINA SIMONE AND PIANO RCA / BMG 1969 / 2001 Not among her best, but the woman is so compelling regardless.

@curiousjim Here is another Jeremy Pelt album that I like, in fact, it was here on these pages that first I've heard it

Outstanding! As far as I’m concerned, Hank Mobley is a very underrated player. When the subject of who the greatest tenor players are/were, Mobley is always outvoted by, of course, Coltrane, Rollins and Henderson. Putting style aside, when it comes to being able to telling a story, I don’t hear why he shouldn’t be alongside the “top three”.

Maybe it’s me. We all know how passionate O-10 is about Jazz and I find it hard to believe that even if he has simply decided to distance himself from the thread for whatever reason, that he wouldn’t take a peak once in a while, at least, Concern has been expressed on several occasions and there has been no response from him. Considering that we know he had health issues, it is not unreasonable to worry about the seriousness of the reason he has disappeared. So, I propose that this serve as a message to O-10 to respond and let us know how he is doing. At the vey least, use it as an opportunity for long time contributors and newcomers alike to revive the thread in his honor. I truly hope that “honor” is an overstatement. To get things rolling: Freddie Hubbard was amazing. If forced to pick, I would probably pick him for “favorite trumpet player”. Great record that shows what a monster player he was. Incredibly inventive and great clarity in his improvisation:

Hey rok have you been calling O10 periodically since his absence here started or just this recent call? regretfully, I think frogman may be right that O10s health problem may have worsened. To what extent we all can only speculate but if he has not answered your call or calls (when he usually did answer?) has me thinking sad thoughts
I do hope he is ok and, all sarcasm aside, wish he would post some of his controversial (you call it noise, rok) non jazz music |
frogman that 1962 Bill Evans album was re- released in 1982 titled The Interplay Sessions. From Wiki The Interplay Sessions is a 1982 Milestone album that includes the entirety of this album, and tracks recorded for Riverside on August 21 and 22 of the same year with a different lineup (with Zoot Sims and Ron Carter, and without Freddie Hubbard and Percy Heath). The Interplay Sessions peaked at number 26 on the Billboard Jazz Albums charts in 1983.[3] The CD reissue Interplay adds another take of "I'll Never Smile Again" as a bonus track. At the Grammy Awards of 1984, Orrin Keepnews won the Grammy Award for Best Album I added this to my Spotify library and am listening to it now. Great jazz! |
The past few days have been the only times I have ever called him. Including twice today. The number came from google so I hope it's the correct number. I assume an 80+ year old would be at home most of the time.
