Jazz for aficionados

Jazz for aficionados

I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.

Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".

"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.

While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

Enjoy the music.

And they called it "Puppy Love";

I have all those songs of yesteryear on a 10 inch reel that I was reminiscing to just a few days ago.
I heard The Dells today on my usb music stick in the truck.

This music never dies. But, TWA, Boeing 707, and The SkyLiners, The Dells,  all gone.

Cheers

Rok, I have a 2 CD set titled "Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers" at the jazz corner of the world which has "Just Coolin" plus another  CD.

Amazon is selling this used for $41.11 plus shipping.

I have no idea what's going on?
The prices on amazon can be absurd.   I have several CDs that I paid the usual 12-15 dollars for, that some idiots on Amazon have listed for 496 dollars or more.   I don't think they actually get any takers.   Just following the hype.

My max limit for a single Jazz CD is 20 dollars.  I guess on average, I have paid around 8 dollars for most of my Jazz CDs.    BMG record club.   I did break my rule once, and paid close to 40 dollars for Oscar Peterson's "Girl Talk".  Japanese.

How much for Classical?   Don't ask.

Cheers
In my last post I mistakenly referred to the title of the “new” Blakey recording as “Coolin’ It”. The correct title is “Just Coolin’”. The title tune “Just Coolin” also appears on “At The Jazz Corner of the World”, a double album of live performances recorded a few weeks later. This live double album includes three or four additional tunes that were recorded earlier for the “Just Coolin” studio release which was not released until recently.

Btw, if shopping for “At the Jazz Corner of the World”, don’t confuse it with “Meet Me at the Jazz Corner of the World”, a different live double album recorded a couple of years later with a different lineup.

Rok, who needs some stinkin notes; that music sure makes me feel good, I was a young fashionable single gentleman, rolling in a brand new 66 "Deuce and a quarter", and those tunes were on the jukeboxes of all of the most fashionable "Bistros" that someone such as myself should frequent.

Feelin' Good:

Great song.   And the winner is:   The babe in the purple dress.    You just KNEW I would pick her.   She was the only one that did not look and sound like an amateur.

In 1966, I was living in Atlanta, working for IBM, just months away from receiving a letter from the Government that began with, "Greetings". :(

Great clips

This Blue Note article explains it all:

http://www.bluenote.com/art-blakey-jazz-messengers-just-coolin/
Since I consider myself an "Art Blakey completist" the new release is already in my collection.
LOVE a lot of the music mentioned but admit to listening to somewhat more recent discoveries as I get older... with plenty of exceptions of course.  Jakob Bro, JD Allen, Keith Jarrett,  Bill Frisell's recent VALENTINE is great. I tend to love any recording involving Paul Motian and Brian Blade. Lately, before going to bed I've been putting on Art Pepper"s NATURE BOY.

Rok, I assume you have the Messengers with Horace Silver, the one with "Nica's Dream"; that's absolutely essential.

nrthomas haven’t seen you post on here before.

re JD Allen Outstanding on the tenor sax. He is one of the new young lions on the jazz scene. I have all 13 of his releases as a leader. He is releasing a new album on the 28th of this month. Here it is:

Great to see another fan of JD here. I like all of the other musicians you mentioned as well. Art Pepper holds a special place in my heart.

Rok, Detroit was very prosperous in 66; "Motown" was going strong, people drove new cars and lived in nice homes. When I went there it was the first time I had ever been to a nightclub where they parked your car.

It was also the first time I had gone to a club where pretty girls checked your hat and coat (this is just like the movies I thought) we saw a young Aretha Franklin, she was on fire.

How things have changed.

An old seaman that sailed the world and met women of all types, once told me: Mary, you have to remember once for all what we, men, are facing with. It is simple. I’ll tell you. "No money, no honey."

Ok, I understand, I said, but of how much money we are talking here? :--)

Because, there is the difference.

Of all the things on the world, the worst thing that happened to "humanity" is, money. Too much money, to be more precise, because you have to live out of something, air is simply not enough...

"The best things in life are free, but you can keep them for the birds and bees, now give me money."

Too much money twists people that much that you can’t tell anymore is that a person you are talking to or something that used to be person. What a waste of talking.

Where have all the people gone? I need two cows, three sheeps, few chickens and a donkey. Come to think of it, this could be a song title...
I am count on you guys to buy my new CD.

Meanwhile in my headphones...

The only one who could ever reach me
Was the son of a preacher man
The only boy who could ever teach me
Was the son of a preacher man
Yes, he was, he was, ooh, Lord knows, he was (yes, he was)

Good morning/afternoon mary_jo

I see you have money on your mind. And Dusty Springfield in your ears.

One of my favorite "money" songs as well as a great bass line.

Enjoy your day.

The lack of money is the root of all evil; you can safely walk the rich sidewalks of the North side of Chicago morning noon or night with your jewelry, and no one will give you a second glance.

Speaking of money and great bass lines:

A great song from one of the most talented Latin artists around today, or ever, that does the best job I’ve ever heard of conveying the sentiment that I think mary_jo is expressing.  Unfortunately, it is in Spanish.  Had I the time right now, I would translate.  However, I think that any of you non-Spanish speakers might be able to get the gist of the message after a couple of listens.  Don’t be turned off by the cheesy Disco intro; it’s part of the message.  Great bass line; if Disco is your thing.

All great songs guys.

Thank you pjw. I like that one too.

Money is not on my mind, I never know how much I have in my wallet but all around me remind me of money, money and money.

O-10, the look of love by Dusty, seems to me now like one of the best I have ever heard. I like the simplicity of her voice which I feel in every sound she makes.
fro, that’s the song of modern time. The lyrics in Spanish are not too complicated so about 90% is easy to understand. I bet the same is with Axe too.

So as the greed for money even though you have enough to live with.

Bill Potts -- THE JAZZ SOUL OF PORGY & BESS
with / Everyone. Most notable, Charlie Shavers, Harry Edison, Art Farmer, Bob Brookmeyer, Jimmy Cleveland, Phil Woods, Zoot Sims, Al Cohn, and Bill Evans.

Don’t know if they captured the essence of Porgy & Bess, but the playing is exceptional. Excellent booklet that even lists the Soloists that play on each number. Always helpful for us Amateurs.

Amazon says I purchased this in 2017. This is my second time playing it. One of those that you appreciate as time goes on.
Recorded January 13, 14 & 15 in NYC. 1959. Great year for Jazz.

Rok, all the tunes were a good listen, but in regard to comparing anything to "Porgy and Bess"; it's been done too many times; you can't re-invent the wheel.
The Potts recording was in contrast to the Gil Evans/Miles Davis landmark rendition of Porgy and Bess that commercially overshadowed it. The differences were merely in the arrangers’ taste and personality. The two recordings were equal artistically. --- Jazz Times

OP,

I am not sure what he, Potts, was trying to achieve. I guess I will now have to dig out Miles and compare. I do think that he missed the mark on one of the signature pieces of Porgy, "It ain’t necessarily so". If you don’t get that right, you don’t get P&B right. But, I did love "my man’s gone now".

It seems as if the players, who were all first class, played what was put in front of them, without considering what and who P&G was all about.

Can’t win them all.

Cheers

Rok, I agree 100% with your assessment. Miles did it better.

My favorite version of "It Ain't Necessarily So" is so unique that I don't compare it to anyone else's;

song for my father
https://youtu.be/NFjmWI-d6d4
I have just read news where person, so called musician just bought himself a new lamborghini and the name of the musician is in translation Grandmother the Pig. I suppose you can guess what type of so called music he makes. Nur nevermind, maybe it is time that we all change our profession. I figure we all together can’t be worst than G. the Pig. I have already named the song title in one of my previous posts. Now it’s your turn.

Mary_jo, did you post that for your father?

That will always be one of my favorite tunes.

I can't wait to find out who "Grandmother the pig" is.
