orpheus10 Another Mingus you might like : "The Great Concert of Charles Mingus" April 1964 live album from Paris concert. Extended cuts , great lineup including Dolphy, J Byard, Clifford Jordan D annie Richmond.I have the double lp it's available on cd. The Richard Wyands music cut you posted didn't work could you post it again? I feel the same as you Wyands is a sideman on so many of my collection who is deserving of wider recognition. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=1YgVWoU9Nvs |
Pryso, that's exactly what I'm talking about; I don't have it, but I will get it.

Very nice Ike Quebec clips; thanks! Fans of Quebec may also like this tenor player. A contemporary of Quebec they both played with a somewhat similar style rooted in the Swing tradition more so than bop. Both had a big robust tone although Jimmy Forrest, to my ears, sounded a little more contemporary and with less breathiness in his tone. The first tune on this record is the theme song for Newark’s (Quebec’s birthplace, coincidentally) WBGO Jazz 88.3 FM’s “The Blues Hour” show. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=cFNc3D_kCi4 |

Nsp, I like him too. His last session and most touching, for me, is ’Soul Samba’. But, in case that you wish to hear some less known albums where he plays you can check Jimmy Smiths ’Open house/Plain talk’ albums, recorded on the same day but not issued untill much later... https://youtu.be/lnGBpc3mq1swith singer Dodo Green https://youtu.be/V5cu3C0kKo0with Grant Green ’Born to be blue’...(also on two extra track on ’Latin Bit’) https://youtu.be/8g5Mfxoe6BUalo, Blue Note ’45 rpm sessions is nice double album...and ’Easy living’ is not mentioned often.... https://youtu.be/f3D1Yr0u7VQ |

orpheus10 &alexatpos Thanks for the Freddie Roach posts. I give the nod to the "Heavy Soul" album with Ike Quebec.I just ordered a copy. I really like his playing I have several more titles from his Blue Note recordings. Did not know he died early 60's . Another excellent talent cut short.

inna, I appreciate your attitude and I understand you. I witnessed this "quarrel" many times and wanted to react. Partly I agree with rok when he says something like "who are we to say/judge anything" - and this opinion stopped me for doing anything but partly I thought that something should be said from the rest of us. It is more stupid just to ignore it and pretend that nothing is going on. I follow this thread whenever I have the time to do so but on the other hand I do not follow it in detail ('cause you guys produce the jazz clips faster than an average bakery produces donuts per a day) so I cannot be familiar with all what is said between fro and orpheus. One has to be fully involved to understand. If nothing then out of respect for the both guys. But from what I can see, I have never seen fro making the first step in the quarrel (this is where I do not agree with rok). It was orpheus. Fro continued to be in the defensive mode and in my opinion, if somebody throw a stone on you, I am perfectly fine with the fact that you throw the stone (not bread like Jesus) on him back. Therefore, fro's reactions are justified. And frankly, I admire the guy and his patience. He obviously care about a jazz a lot (this is jazz thread after all) to put aside the personal things. As for orpheus, it is hard for me to say anything since I respect the guy. But whenever I see him provoking fro, I say to myself, oh my god, there he goes again. Then I remember that he is going through rough times so I let it go. Think about some jazz players, mildly would be to say that they had an awful behaviour, but you still like their music, don't you? So personal issues (if there are any) are to be let go (?) in order to put the jazz on the first place. If we would not do that, this thread would quickly fall apart. OK, say it as rok said and move on. And if nothing, I even think that now and then, such situations attracts people to follow this thread even more. People like to see blood. I can already see them watching and cheering. There is no biz like showbiz... But orpheus, with all due respect, take it easy man... So jazz... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vP02sgYrHsw |

Why do I have to get into these things whether I want to or not? Frogman, someone else drew you into this "nothing" that occurs when someone doesn't know when to quit. Rather than write a post on this calamity, I'll state that Rok's sounds pretty good to me, and further more, brother Ray Charles made some applicable remarks on the subject for anyone that the shoe fits; while his statements are subject to gross misinterpretation, so be it; take this with a grain of salt and as much humor as you can muster. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8Tiz6INF7I |
First of all, I don't even know what the issue was between O-10 and Inna. I don't even know what the alleged 'insult' was. I don't even care. But, he 'threatened' to delete all his posts because O-10 didn't heed his 'warnings'. WTF!!!! Just because O-10 had the temerity to "insult" The Frogman. hahahahahhahahhahaha Now, The Frogman insults people on an almost daily basis. He uses polite language, but he insults them nevertheless. Maybe he thinks we are not smart enough to understand it. As if, he has to use cuss words or vulgar words for us to 'get' the insult. News flash to The Frogman: We went to school also. Now, no insult was intended by this post. Cause Lord knows, I don't want to come under 'Frogman minion' attack. Cheers |
pjw, rare gem indeed! Thanks for posting that. One of my very favorite things on all of YouTube which has been posted here a couple of times before. That is such a great example of, and touches on so much of what gets talked about here: two totally different and equally valid stylistic approaches to the same music. Gotta love YouTube! |
Rok, you should know better than that. Having said that, I should probably have known that you don’t know better than that.
If you are having an issue with someone, or something he/she posted, keep me out of it; that was your first mistake. I challenge you to find and post one, one single example of a time that I wrote something that could remotely be construed as being insulting that was not in response to someone else’s (usually you, or....well, I’ll practice what I just preached) clearly insulting comment or attack. A disagreement about the music is not an “insult”; unwarranted personal attacks and comments on a music forum about a participant’s musical tastes are. As is referring to someone else’s musical offering as “noise”; even if it is to you.
Now, before you lash out again, please consider the hypocrisy and double standard that your post demonstrates; unfortunately, not an isolated instance. You are correct, I don’t need anyone’s “protection”; as you say, “no sacred cows here” (something that ALL should remember). So, why are you protecting someone else? Or, at the very least, USING someone else to attack someone that you may have your own issue with. Or, looked at a different way, if what you unfortunately advocate is true (and I couldn’t disagree more)...
**** People here pretty much say what they want. Don’t like it, move on. ****
....is that the sound of the door shutting behind you that I hear? Can’t have it both ways.

*****I gave him a warning when he publicly insulted Frogman*****
First of all, The Frogman does his share of insulting. He does not need your 'protection' And who the hell are you to be 'warning' folks? People here pretty much say what they want. Don't like it, move on. This is not an 'Audiophile' thread. No sacred cows here. Cheers

For over 20 years, my vinyl collection did no more than occupy space. That's because CD's sounded so much better. After perusing the "Analog" forum, and reading about how inferior CD's are to my old fashioned records, I decided to investigate; it takes "money", and quite a bit of it for a record player to sound better than CD; that's what they don't tell you. After a few years and more time and money than I care to talk about, I'm really into vinyl. Beyond this "audiophile stuff", I keep discovering records I didn't even know that I had; this is one of them; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vO0-mfey2BMHow about my main man Grant Green; ain't he funky; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GLBTSrD42QY |

That is one cool piano intro; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLKVsMuYoZAs many quarters as I put in the jukeboxes over the years in many cities while traveling, plus all the times I have played this jam at home, I had the thought "That's one cool piano intro", but I never delved into it. His name is "Richard Wyands"; who the devil is Richard Wyands? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_WyandsMy collection is full of Richard Wyands, but as a sideman; these are the things you find out when you listen and focus on what you're listening to without any distractions or distracting thoughts; the jazz life is beautiful. |

What is an aficionado? According to this: a person who is very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about an activity, subject, or pastime; aficionados of the finest wines. Synonyms: connoisseur, expert, authority, specialist, pundit, cognoscente. As jazz enthusiasts, we primarily focus on instruments: trumpet, sax, guitar, piano, etc; consequently, we may not know about what I call a "jazz stylist" as opposed to a vocalist, that's because he imitates musical instruments. Although we don't know everything there is to know, as "aficionados", it's our duty to learn. After "Don't Worry, Be Happy", it's possible that Bobby McFerrin was taken as a joke by many of the masses, but as aficionados, we should know better. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bobby_McFerrinHere is a man who worked harder than most musicians honing his craft, and becoming a superb musician; he has earned this aficionados highest respect. |
**** I do not think Joe Lovano sounds like John Coltrane (JMHO) ****
**** Rather unique for a contemporary player in that he shows little or obvious Coltrane influence; more Rollins and Henderson. ****
Glad you liked the Cleveland clips, that set of septet/octet recordings is on the way.

Thanks frogman for those links to Jimmy Cleveland. I just ordered a 4 disc collection of his: https://www.amazon.com/Classic-Albums-Plus-Jimmy-Cleveland/dp/B0754B78G6/ref=pd_sbs_15_2?_encoding=U...I love the sound of the trombone. I have all of the "Trombone Shorty" recordings he put out plus multiple discs of Jack Teagarden, Curtis Fuller, JJ Johnson and Kai Winding to name a few. I do not think Joe Lovano sounds like John Coltrane (JMHO) Inna, Don’t be so sensitive your contributions to this thread that I have seen are ok by me. Nobody is perfect and the persons who think they are will also tell you their crap don’t stink! |
Mary, appreciate your words. It was my final effort to deliver a message to the OP. I gave him a warning when he publicly insulted Frogman. It didn't work, his apology was false. I gave him another warning when he switched to me at the first opportunity, it didn't work either. His mind is bordering on disarray. |
inna, I wish you haven't done that. Your posts are of much value for this thread. |
...yes fro, humor actually saves the whole thing, in many cases.
If it is not too tragic, it has to be funny.
Cleveland is great and as for Lovano, when I heard the Tenor Time at first, I thought, man, this is Coltrane. It is obviously obvious since even me can notice that. |

I deleted all my most recent posts except one. Moderator has nothing to do with it. |
Thanks a lot for that information Rok. Let me know if you discover any odd ball Mingus; I'm talking about something like a different version of "Good Bye Pork Pie Hat" or one of those live European recordings. Is Mingus and Dolphy available?
I use to get a "Mosaic" magazine that gave detailed information on the box sets; even then you received more than you wanted, but it was OK.
Just not enough detailed information to make a decision; I think I'll pass.

Got it, thanks. Luddite that I am I don’t use any “extra” Agon features. |
*****Curious, Alex, how can one tell who a deleted post is from? ***** I don't remember why it was, but previously, until I changed it, all the posts on this thread were sent to my mail box on AOL. Not only could you see who sent deleted posts, you could read the deleted post as well. Cheers It was just too much in my mail box, so I stopped it. |
Curious, Alex, how can one tell who a deleted post is from? I’ve often been curious of the same thing myself.

Great clips, mary_jo. Lovano is one of my favorite current tenor players. Rather unique for a contemporary player in that he shows little or obvious Coltrane influence; more Rollins and Henderson. And, Joey Barron! What a great drummer and one who doesn’t get mentioned much. Thanks for those. Btw, in case anyone cares, in the picture on the “Tenor Time” album he is playing a straight (!) tenor; a bit of an oddity. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=9ngZFRisurUOn a more serious note: Another favorite tenor player and even more favorite composer from one of my favorite albums: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=hi6nOr9MIqIhttps://m.youtube.com/watch?v=evpn_2OhCes |

Mosaic Boxed Sets: 9 CD set of Mingus!!! I imagine 6000 alternate takes, plus all the music I already have, plus tons of perfunctory stuff that Mingus never meant to see the light of day. I am sure there are a few gems I don't have, but I have most of what the unwashed has declared to be essential. The unwashed: that would be us aficionados. The same reason I don't have the 7 CD Sonny Rollins set, which I really wanted, or the Coltrane Heavyweight Champion set. I already had the individual CDs. Cheers
