Is this a meaningful upgrade?

I currently use a Schiit BitFrost 2/64 DAC. I'm considering an upgrade. I don't have any specific complaints about it. I think it's easily the best in it's price range, like most Schiit products.

I'm considering buying a used Schiit Yggy as an upgrade in overall quality rather than a change in sound. It uses the same DAC chips but with higher quality implementation.

Is this a meaningful upgrade or just a sideways move?

When the 4311s were the most popular studio monitors, they almost always had a 1/3 octave equalizer in the chain. I expect the 4312s were the same. You might consider trying one. It can be fun to dial in your sound if nothing else.

My dealer sold me a AES/EBU cable to run between the pulse and the str preamp dac input. I assumed that was the best option.

So yes so yes you should get the yggy if you’re interested in the pulse, for the aes connection.

And yes you should be looking at the pulse. Lovely little piece of work.

I own both the Bifrost, and the Yggy. I can tell you the Yggy is a meaningful upgrade.

Another vote for upgrading both your DAC and streamer.  Innuos equipment will make a difference you can hear in my experience.

I've been using the upgraded Bifrost 2/64 for a while and it's great. Bought an URD last year mostly to try the "nexus" input and that combo has really excellent sound. I'd have to a/b anything I'd consider to replace the Bifrost and that's not likely to happen, and I don't care that much. If they issue and upgrade card for the Bifrost I'd buy that out of curiosity.
