It verges on being overly detailed. It's ok. I'm not sure I would buy the Transporter again. The measurements are great on it. The noise floor is 10 dB lower than the Benchmark DAC 1.
I'm in the process of A-B'ing the transporter against several DACs. I have an MSB DAC still in the box I'm going to try. I think the MF Tri-vista might be might next test.
I have a transporter, a squeezebox and a Rega Apollo. Neither Slim Device quite measures up to the Apollo but their convenience is fantastic.

I dont care for the AKM DAC chip used in it. Very detailed and layered, but not musical IMO. I modded the AKM test board and ran it it off SLA batteries to evaluate it. Even then it didn't grab me. The digital output should be fine, although more jitter than I care for. I listen to inaudible levels of jitter though, so I'm spoiled. The real advantage is 24/96 digital feed from WiFi, but at a cost.

I have for almost a year been running my Transporter through my Audio Aero Capitole using the AES/EBU cable. I have tried skipping the AA and using the Transporter DAC and I find this too analytic and lacking the 'musicality' of the AA. This has worked really well for my music library stored in my Apple G5.
What has been lacking is the same quality in internet streaming audio from the Transporter through the AA's DAC. I recently got an ANTHEM D2 pre/pro and I run the Transporter digitally into the Anthem and the internet music now sounds really fantastic. I still run the AA through the Analog passthru circuit of the Anthem when I want to listen to a CD.
It is my belief that the AA really is made for CDs and the other digital inputs are really good but the AA was designed first for CDs. If you want to use the Transporter for your music library and the AA's DAC, then continue.
I don't think that the AA will give you the same quality with streaming internet audio as with CDs, etc. |
The quality of the transport feed is strictly a function of the jitter, whether it is CD's or internet streaming audio. If they are both 16/44.1 and low jitter, they should sound identical. With a reclocker to reduce jitter, there is no reason why the Transporter as a transport cannot match or even beat a CD transport.

I found the stock TP a little sterile myself. However, the Modwright TP sounds great to me; very musical w/out losing detail. Highly recommended. |

Pavpet - no jitter? Think again. Why do you believe there is no audible jitter? Advertising? Reviews?
All clocks have jitter, some are just lower than others. You dont need a spinning CD to get jitter.

I just purchase the Transporter almost two weeks ago and I am using it with FLAC files. To my ears after break-in, it sounds great. I truly love the sound, and to me it sounds better then my CD Player. Voices sound clear and detail and to me musical. My CD player (BAT VK D5se with SIX-PAK output capacitor modules) sound like it playing through a filter next to the transporter. But again thats to my ears. Maybe its because I have an all tube setup. I cant say for sure, Later on this week I will connect my other amps (CI D200s) to it and see how they compare. But as it stands right now, my unmodded Transporter is a keeper and the CD player is a thing of the pasts. |
I agree that the Transporter has moved my CDs to the proverbial 'back shelf' even as my CD player is the Audio Aero Capitole. Moving my music library to my G5 and using Apple Lossless is really good and so much easier. |

The TP jitter matches the Benchmark DAC 1 while having about a 10 dB lower noise floor. The Benchmakr is generally considered a very good DAC. regards, David |
Wireless200 - I can hear the jitter with both of these stock units in my system. If I reclock them or use my own USB converter, the jitter is lower - better clarity and imaging. Measurements mean nothing. Noone knows what level is actually audible and at what frequencies etc. Even modulation characteristics come into play, ie; changing jitter with time. What matters is whether you can hear it or not.
How many CD players that measured perfect have you listened to and come away unimpressed?

I have had the Transporter now since last Thursday.
So far so good. Not the same as my Sony SCD-1 which I sold but
still quite good. I will use the Transporter when multi-tasking, not good enough for critical listening IMHO.
But the sheer convenience to listen to music cannot be beat.
In can see myself going for Dan's Modwright in the future to explore to see if it really is as good as the 6 Moons review states it is.
But for now still learning how to use all of the options.
One thing is for sure, it will stay in my system.

thanks ,dan wrights mod , is taking the unit and making it very analog sounding , my AA AERO CAPITOLE SE MK II SOUNDS VERY ANALOG, AND THE CONVENIENCE USING MODDED TRANSPORT IN SYSTEN USING FLAC FILES WILL BE VERY INTERESTING, A Friend has modded transport with seperate computer set up with tons and tons of storage capacity ,with mark levinson equipment ,and wilson speakers, and has stored 10000 songs in flac files .album covers ,sound is very impressive
