My experience with Oppo was poor.... problems with picture and sound within a few days of operation. Returned it and won't go back. Just my experience... YMMV

Almost everyone elses' milage did vary.Oppo's are very high quality for the $$ and have the best picture of any DVD player according to all the reviews. And they have the best customer support of anyone in the electronics business. You must have had a defective unit. They would have made it right with NO cost to you including shipping both ways.JD

On the other hand, I purchased a used Pioneer Elite DV-47A for a great price and it worked flawlessly for 5 years & many, many hours playing kids movies before it finally gave up the ghost.

garyrb: I've loved my esoteric dv50s. It's been one hec of a DVD player. The redbook and sacd are pretty good to. I'll likely upgrade it one day, but in the 4 years of so that i've owned it, it just keeps performing.

I have a pretty hi rez set up. I have zero complaints on this unit. The newer Esoteric's have DVD upsampling which supposedly closes the gap some on blu ray. Again, I don't feel like I am missing that much as is...great pic and sound.
You didn't mention a price point, but the Esoterics are very nice, I used a DV-50s for several years and was very happy with it until I went to the new EMM Labs.
I like my Linn Unidisk SC for music. I don't watch a lot of movies though, and it's acceptable in the movie department. I like it better compared to Bel Canto PL-1A, NAD, Denon, and others I've owned.
