If you need gain, the Saga won’t work for you. It’s purely passive and only has a tube buffer. It’s a great piece for the $$, but no gain.

I dont need gain, just want to add tubbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbe sound to my amp and speakers.  Maybe the xDuoo TA-26 OTL Tube Amp used as a pre amp ?

Thank you for your reply that looks like an interesting option.  I'm also looking at Xduoo TA-26 which is a very well reviewed headphone amp that also serves as a preamp read of people having good success using it as a preamp.

SUGGEST you look for a used Audio Research pre-amp.  There is a reason that their early ones sell for many dollars.  I was able to buy an SP-6B for around $800 and it is amazing.  You may have to look a while or raise your budget a few dollars, but you will be very pleased if that is the sound you are looking for.  They have produced the industry standard pre-amps (not EVERY one) for almost 50 years.

Look for a used Aric Audio line stage or preamp. I believe that most of his offerings come with adjustable gain control. 

I ended up getting a musical paradise M 301 Mk 3 deluxe.  Headphone tube amp/ 6.5 w for speakers.  Has some good reivews.
