Hi ZD,
I use the free (non-"Pro") version of the Windows-based program HD Tune. Among other features, it allows you to monitor S.M.A.R.T. data (health information provided by the drive) and to run an error scan in both quick and thorough modes.
S.M.A.R.T. data can't be read through external drive interfaces (USB, Firewire, and I believe eSATA), btw, so if you want to access that data (which I'd recommend) you'll have to install the drives internally (as a second or third hard drive) rather than installing them into an external enclosure.
Best regards,
