Gain Issues for Passive's?

It's been years since I had a system where I had to be cautious about the value of Input Voltage's concerning Passive Pre-Amps and was wondering what I should look for when purchasing a Passive and a DAC for a Passive?
Can anyone suggest the Value's and some Manufactures that I might take a look at?
