Dynaco A-25's and a sub-woofer?

Thanks Bongofury. Ironically I get to demo them tomorrow night with a Dynaco ST-70: never heard one before so that should be exciting. Maybe I can wrap up a package deal. I do happen to have Thorens TD165 TT that needs an excuse to be dusted off although it's obviously not in the same league as a TD124. Nonetheless, this sounds like it should be a good secondary classic system for the den. Take care.

I would look for an old Dynaco Dynakit amp, or maybe a newer used Italian one like a Unico Preludio. The tubes will warm these up immensely. I would match it to a Thorens 124 tt.

To all, thanks for the replies. I planned on using them in conjunction with my MiniMax pre-amp and a Parasound 750a (75 watts) providing the power. Music sources would be both TT and CD. That being said, I am interested in the nostalgic approach to the music and all the reviews that I have read have commented on the open airiness of these speakers. They sound like a wonderful fit for tubes and vinyl. Ultimately they would be back-up speakers to my Klipsch Forte II's, which are in storage along with my M520 tube amp.

Regarding price, these are offered by the original owner and they are in primo shape. A quick check on eBay or even Audiogon shows that these routinely sell for more than $200 or more. The key is to find them at a garage sale, etc. and then sell them.

I would grab them and match them with other vintage gear like Sansui.

I don't think $175 is to much for a pair of A-25 if they truely are in excellent shape. And while I agree with Ponnie that speakers of today are more open sounding, with tigher bass, better high frequency extension, ect. I certainly feel that you'll have to spend much more money to best the A-25s, especially if you're going to use them in a vintage and/or tube based system.

With or without a couple of inexpensive mods, I would not agree with Ponnie that "there are many speakers today that will better it's sound". At least not anywhere near the price of the A-25s. Although on that point my opinion is that $175 is too much.

The Dynaco A25's are nice speakers but they are over 30 years old. There are many speakers today that will better it's sound. I have a pair of A50s and I use them occasionally for parties, etc. About 15 years ago I used them for my main system but there wasn't enough openess in the top end and the bass was not as tight as I truly wanted. Back in the day 30 years ago they were wonderful. But in todays era there are way too many speakers that are simply more open and with bass prensentation as good or better for close to the same money or a little bit more. If you want them for nostalgia purposes well that's okay but they sold many thousands of pairs of them and they are not rare or as rare as people claim. I have also owned several pairs of the A25's too.
