Durable record vacuum cleaner recommendation?
I am looking for a durable record vacuum machine. Any recommendations?
Ideally will also do 10" and 7", and be on the quieter side. Should be able to handle some volume without breaking.
Background: my Project VC-S is busted; vacuum motor got noisy to 95dB at 1 m, a bit much, IMHO. ~$250 motor part with no returns and no guaranteed compatibility is a non-starter. This is already a replacement unit for one with bad gears for the platter. So Pro-ject is out of the running.
In the last couple of months, I used the unit quite a bit (around 1K records vacuumed) as I got an ultrasonic and go through my entire collection.
Thanks for any leads and recommendations, particularly if you have run a few thousand records through your unit with no issues.

@johnss Finally got the new motor installed. Just FYI, it requires a 15A fuse, 10A blows after a second or less. Rug doctor accidentally sent me two motors, and did not respond to inquiries about returning the extra. So I have another spare now. |
yes, you will need a larger fuse. The rug doctor motor draw a couple of amps more than the stock motor, but will last much longer. I had the same issue; blew the stock fuse so measured the current draw on the new motor. don't recall which fuse I installed but project machine has been running flawlessly now. |
@lewm yes, blew multiple 10A fuses. Once it stayed on for maybe 10 seconds, the other times it was an almost immediate blow. So likely it is just slightly above 10A. I have not found 12A fuses, though. It may also be that a new motor will initially draw a bit more, and once it has run I may be able to go down to 10A. By now I pretty much finished the cleaning of my ~1,500 records (just a few 7" left). Thereafter it is only new arrivals. |
