Does USB cable length make a diference?

I'm not talking a super long USB cable. I'm looking at a short usb cable from my Streamer to Dac (1 foot would even work). However if I got a more standard length (2 to 3 ft) would I lose anything? A longer cable would be more versatile if I ever needed it for soemething else.

The person down under who makes Curious usb cables claims shorter sound better.

USB, unlike say single ended audio, is a tightly specified standard with a non-profit corporation -- USB Implementers Forum, Inc. -- that maintains standards. The standard for USB 2.0, which I think is still what most DACs are using, is a 680 page document with extensive mechanical and electrical specs for cabling, with length maximums determined by signal pair attenuation and propagation delay for each class of USB speed to ensure interoperability and signal integrity. The spec for USB 2.0 for full and high speed data is max cable length of 5 meters, I think.

No doubt there are poorly made and poorly shielded USB cables in the market at one end, but even ad the audiophile end, I'm not sure how many if any audiophile USB cable sellers go for USIF compliance certification.  But a USB cable at the OP's proposed lengths -- 1 foot vs. 3 feet -- the differences in length should make no difference if the cable is property shielded and meets spec.

I haven't noticed differences when using 1 meter or 2 meter versions of the same cable in my system. I bet something crazy like a 25 foot cable would be problematic though.

More important imho is the get the right length to organize it properly. Too short or too long and you might have it crossing over or getting too close to power cables, which is not ideal.

I was told the opposite, shorter for USB. Coaxial SPDIF and AES/EBU 1.5 meters is best.
