Counterfeit Chinese Cables

I thought that I would write this for those who are curious about one of the many counterfeit Chinese interconnect cables that are available these days. I know that there have been threads about the subject before, and I was always curious because they seem to be such a bargain. I don't really recall much about what any members actually said about the performance of these counterfeit cables, and I didn't look back and do any research, but a couple of months ago there was a thread that came around to discussing the quality of Chinese made components, and oldhvymec said something that made sense to me.

He said that people that say that what they are making is junk should consider that much of what is in our gear, and a lot of our American brands are actually manufactured there. I decided shortly after that that I would take the chance on a set of interconnects, because I suspected that the interconnects going from my pre to my amp were the weak link and needed upgrading. The interconnects going from my DAC to my pre were Kimber Select which are very good, but the other set were LAT International (now defunct) which had cost $500.00 when new, but I had reason to believe they were lacking because I have one of their digital cables that turned out to be very poor sounding in comparison to others I own.

I decided on a one meter pair of counterfeit Nordost Odin interconnects for a total of $104.00 from Aliexpress. I received them a couple of weeks later. They appeared to be well made, and the locking fake WBT rca's were very impressive and are very tight.

First impressions after installing them were light, thin sound, lacking bass. Each couple of days brought improvements, but from the beginning I noticed that they were quieter. Now, weeks later, I can say that they are drastically better that the LAT's in every way. Detail and ambience are much better, but it's the focus and separation of instruments that is most noticeable.

I have no way of knowing if they are really a copy of the Nordost design, but I am impressed enough that I am going to try a counterfeit Nordost digital cable.

Obviously, this isn't a comparison that is useful to most, because there probably isn't anyone here using the LAT's, and everything is system dependent. I just wanted to relay my positive experience.

The only thing that's changed since US started playing this rigged game, with full knowledge of it's rigging, is sudden awakening to realization China now real competitor to American hegemony over global affairs.

In 1980's I recall telling people they were about to see the greatest redistribution of wealth the world had ever seen. Very few took this seriously, they needed to believe in American exceptionalism, the idea we no longer needed manufacturing, we'd supply the brains rather than brawn.

Not even the 'big name' cable manufacturers up there with him. Still waiting to hear from "cables are snake oil" crowd. What side they on here?

Reverse engineering has been going on entire human existence. Unless cable companies have patents on design and/or proprietary parts used in that cable's design there are no laws being broken.

If these are indeed exact copies of well known cable companies, gives one very good idea of actual manufacturing costs of those cables. I generally build my own power cables these day, following recipes generously shared by individuals seeking to promote audio pleasure rather than profit.

I suspect many off the shelf cables, even ones from the reputable manufacturers are not patented. Most, if not all purchase metal and have it drawn by the same few companies, nothing to patent, the connectors and dielectrics mostly the same. This leaves design, and many of these cables use common designs, only so many designs available.

While Cardas may have patents, lets see the whole list of cable manufacturers with patents. Until its proven they have both patents and offending cable is indeed being marketed as the 'real' deal, we don't have patent theft and/or consumer theft. If being marketed as counterfeit cable no one's being fooled, they know exactly what they're purchasing, a counterfeit cable. And does one really expect they're getting an exact copy with counterfeit cable, I presume not.

I've been constructing some of my own power cords and IC's for a number of years now, the wire, dielectrics and connectors are exactly what is used in some name brand cables, I know this because some of these parts come from manufacturers who design and sell their own line of cables. This only leaves design, assume design I'm using is exact duplicate of some off the shelf design, after all, how many proprietary designs are possible with the limited number of parts that make up audio cables. Point is, if I can do this, so can Chinese, how do you know what they're doing is in fact patent infringement, they are likely doing the same as I, only difference marketing and selling as counterfeit.

Some people have counterfeit cables mixed up with fake. The counterfeiters are telling you the truth, and you're paying very little for them, what's the issue!

The fakes are the problem, you're paying for the real deal, getting something else. I don't think anyone here has a problem stating sellers of fakes are criminally libel.

I can understand why Cardas has patents, they do use proprietary copper in their cables. Still haven't seen a listing of all these other patented cables with their proprietary metal, parts and design.

Funniest thing is, usual attack around here is cables and cable manufacturers are snake oil and snake oil salesmen, why the sudden compassion for snake oil proprietors.

Festivus was meant to be single day event, not 24/7 365 day celebration. This not example of American exceptionalism, becoming all too far common.

And so another candle came to Audiogon, just waiting to see how long before it burns itself out.

The truly exceptional always mindful of maintaining global view of every topic under review. Repeating same old rhetoric and provocations has no purpose other than to antagonize.

Even more on point, this is audio forum, infiltrators intent on injecting political grievance should limit their anger to audio topics, should be plenty of grievance to exercise here. We can have another snake oil cable thread, how fun!

And like there's never been US made knockoffs, counterfeit and fake items.

For some people its like every citizen of some country they don't like is the worst. And every American exceptional? How about some from all countries are exceptionally bad or good, vast majority somewhere in between. Since when did the govt. of any country define every single person in that country. Funniest thing is, if I were to judge US individuals in this manner, conservatives would suddenly turn into liberals what with Democrat President and majority Congress.

@theaudioamp You assume these people principled. On what grounds? Nah, they're just picking and choosing, not consistent. Or, is it they're principled due to assumption they have truth on their side? We've already established the counterfeit cables are not theft, consumers not being misled. Take the sellers of these items to court and prove harms if it indeed theft. Until adjudicated in court these sellers not guilty and/or involved in theft. And guess what, these cables have been around for years, no one's being fooled, they know exactly what they're getting.

To repeat, the only fraud being perpetuated is from those selling fakes, passing them off a real, selling at price of real item.

Why do we have to go over and over the difference between fakes and these knock off or counterfeit cables. The fakes are theft, the knock offs or counterfeit are a known, people are purchasing with full knowledge, eyes wide open. Again, if there are harms or patent infringement, prove it in court.

And how do you know these cables not quality, many posts here attest to value proposition.

Its quite transparent much of this antagonism towards these sellers is due to nationalist biases. No anger amongst the snake oil proponents for 'theft' by snake oil manufacturers and sellers charging big bucks, and all this anger towards foreign sellers hardly making a buck selling these relatively low priced cables! Something other than rip off of consumers at work here.

What we have here is case of good old American marketing deception. Man, I should be living for free based on all the freebies handed out by Americans. Marketeers count on suckers, based on continuation of falsehoods stated in marketing, no lack of them. Suddenly, people at least getting something for their money, and good value proposition based on posts here, are the suckers, and the sellers thieves. I think some have the whole equation mixed up here.

@theaudioamp They don't care about the price charged for them, preposterous, the anger goes up in correlation to price, Go through endless threads here for proof of that. Doesn't even make sense based on logic, I'd be far more pissed spending a $1k fake vs $100 fake.

I won't even argue in regard to the fact Chinese play by different rules, mentioned that in prior post. US made decision to play this game knowing full well the rules of game. Short term profitability and regard only for investor class by global capitalists made this happen. This is war of capitalism, no chivalry, total war, this is always the way it goes with humans.

Suddenly all this concern with ethics and principles, and all over some relatively cheapo cables. Is this really the line in sand you're drawing, those lines were obliterated long ago. You all better get real, understand we live in global world, never going back to this protectionist isolated realm of self sufficiency. The MAGA world is pure delusion.
