Cornwall iv

Hello all,

I have been eying these for a little while. Since they have been out for a few years I am curious about those who had had them a while and how you still feel about them. If sold them what you changed to.

If anyone has had both Tektons and the Cornwalls would love to hear those impressions as well.

I have a Cronous lll  running my Cornwall 4 and was wondering if I should give a Subwoofer a try to add a bit more thump. The Klipsch Rp-1000sw is on my radar. Not sure if this is a good idea or overkill.

Anyone else use a subwoofer with these speakers?

Two years in, I still love my CW IV. They’re mated with a Luxman MQ-300 via Cardas Clear Beyond in a strongly vinyl-centric system. I rotate several amp/speaker combos through this system. I got the CWs because I wanted a horn/SET option. I’m very happy with this combination.

My CW IV were good stock but reached a much higher level when, following the lead of Don Sachs in another thread, I replaced the x-over caps and resistors with V-Cap ODAM and Path Audio, respectively. I also damped the horns and woofer baskets with Dynamat and replaced the binding posts with WBT Next Gen. You don’t need to to do these things to enjoy these speakers, of course, but for me they made a big improvement.

BTW, a 300b SET is the smallest I’d recommend with them in a good-sized room. I have a nice 2a3 amp that I use in an office system. It doesn’t quite have the oomph to fill a larger space properly with the CW IV.

mkanman, I would say yes on the sub, it gives the sound more weight, a thicker sound overall.  Thanks to Don Sachs, I also put the V-Cap ODAM and Path Audio resistors in.  It does make a difference, bigger stage, better tone, more texture, and more smooth/relaxed compared to stock.  Still maintains the dynamics though.

I had Cornwall IIs bought new in 1983, loved them.  Got rid of them during a downsize a while ago.

Now considering a set of Cornwall IVs that already have the V-Cap ODAM and Path Audio capacitors and resistors installed.

I'm wondering how much this mod changes the basic character of the Cornwall IVs, if at all.  Do they still have the Klipsch Cornwall sound, but more refined?  If they don't sound generally like Cornwalls I probably won't like them.

wrm57 and kclone (and others who have done it), what do you think?  Thanks.

I’ve had my stock Cornwall IVs for about 4 years and I still love them.  I’m using a First Watt F7 class A power amp and Linear Tube Audio preamp with the level 3 upgrade, Aurender W20SE and Holo May KTE.   The CWIVs are 1 of 3 pairs of speakers that I rotate in my basement system, the others being Devore Gibbon Super Nines (my latest purchase) and Stirling Broadcast LS3/6 BBC speakers.  I also have a Pass Labs XA-25 power amp that rotate with the F7.

I’ve been curious about the XO upgrades for some time and I followed the upgrade discussion about the Don Sachs caps and resistors mods.  If I ever upgrade the XO, I’ll get new modified ones and keep the existing ones stock.  I saw a seller on Ebay selling his version of a hand wired XO with different caps than what Don Sachs used here:

I have no idea how this upgrade would compare to the one recommended by Don Sachs.  I noticed several owners that upgraded their CWIVs have since sold them so I’m a bit skeptical about doing so.

I just noticed that Klipsch has raised the MSRP of the CWIV to $7300.  Did that happen recently?
