Choosing Inexpensive Headphone Cable and Other Possible Modifications

Hi Goners,

A friend of mine agreed to build me a pair of open back headphones. He’s using the same drivers that are found in the Aurora Borealis headphones. I saw a pair that he made for himself and was fairly impressed with the tight construction, weight and comfort. He’s doing me a favor because I’m getting them made for essentially what they’ll cost in parts. The only thing that I can say about his design approach, is that he doesn’t really buy into the expensive cables and tweaks hype the same way I do. Anyway, I’m wanting to provide him with a good quality cable but I don’t want to spend more than around two hundred dollars. Unfortunately, DH Cable doesn’t make headphone cable. Also, I’m interested in any other tweaks or mods that might improve the sound quality. Thanks!

Yes, the idea that a pair of headphones could match the sonic quality of my electrostatic speakers is highly unlikely.

The SR1b is what 2-channel people should hear. The CA-1a is similar to standard headphones, but with the best driver.

@mahgister Yes, the idea that a pair of headphones could match the sonic quality of my electrostatic speakers is highly unlikely. I however want a pair of headphones  as I can use them in a variety of applications other than just my reference stereo.

I understand you perfectly ... It takes an headphone for me too ....

I wish you good luck and to your friend ... Anyway report here about the results ...

My best wishes....

Wondering if I can buy off the spool and then terminate the ends myself?

No, you can’t.  Good luck doing whatever you’re looking for.

@soix I’m using a pair of Sony closed back headphones that I bought around 1997 for a few hundred dollars. The only way I can tolerate them is with an equalizer and to say they are limiting is an understatement. So anything that my friend (and speaker technician) can put together is bound to be an improvement. Anyway, thank you for the link. Wondering if I can buy off the spool and then terminate the ends myself?

Thanks, @larsman for your input. If I could find a Black Dragon cable used, yeah that would be ideal. I’ve also been considering contacting Patrick Cullen as he built me a pair of jumper cables for a pair of monitors I used to own.

These are excellent cables at a very reasonable price…

You obviously also need a good headphone amp so you need to budget for that too. Of course you have to like the sound of the headphones, which is not a given as it’s very personal, or the rest of this is moot. Getting something cheap isn’t necessarily right.

BTW, I spoke with Patrick Cullen about headphone cables and it wasn’t something he was interested in as it’s too specialized and not worth the effort for him.  Just fyi.

Price depends on the type and the length, of course, but I've gotten reasonably priced, good quality Black Dragon headphone cables from Moon Audio.

Headphone design is very complex ...

It is why we experienced so unnatural sound at any price with most headphones ...

Even my 100 bucks modified active speakers in their acoustic dedicated corner beat all Headphone i ever had save one which is the more complex headphone ever designed ...

The cable is the least important factor in headphone design by the way ...
