The Brinkmann Nyquist is sublime |
Brinkman is other worldly gear. Just beautiful music... |
I have a bespoke DAC built into a custom The Memory Player server/DAC, but if I didn't and I had the coin, the Nyquist would be the DAC I probably get. It's never got the digital glare.

It makes one wonder just how close the SQ of the new model III is to the Treo. |
There is no new model 3, just the 2. It's not close. The Treo has the carbon tweeter and it makes a large difference. The Treo was based on the 2, but using a cabinet. He was able to do a lot of things with the Treo that he didn't on the 2 because of the extra money involved.
Richard upgrades components all the time in his speakers/gear and don't say anything. Many changes are subtle. When he has whole sale changes, he will come out with a new designation. That's what happened here with the 2's.
|
Ct. Ok, model 2CE Sig. III. A slight slip on my part, but I think you know what I meant. I was only making an observation of the New model 2's SQ capabilities. I agree that the Treo Ct should be the better speaker, but How can you say it's "not close" when you haven't heard the speaker?
I know of a Vandersteen dealer back in the Midwest, (where I bought my Treo Ct's) and he prefers The Vandy 3A's over the Treo's. You and I would prefer the Treos, but there are people out there who have different priorities of the type of sound they like. It's just an opinion. |
@mr_m , I owned the 3a sigs before I bought ctsooner's Treo's (non CT). I would seriously question the hearing of a dealer who thought the 3's were better than the Treo's- unless he/she was referring to the lower end extension, but on the whole, the Treo's outclass the 3a sigs, even without carbon tweeters. Once again-
It's just an opinion.

Bob. As far as the comparison, I agree with you. This dealer is highly respected by Richard Vandersteen. Yes, I have talked to RV about this dealer. Goes to show ya we all hear differently. lol. |
Guys, I'm basing my opinion on what I was told. Marketing wise, they could never have their 3300 speaker come close to the Treo. There are so many differences when you add in how much more they can put into the higher priced speaker.
That said, I bet the new 2's will be crazy good. When he upgrades components in one speaker, he ofter upgrades them in the other ones, but doesn't say anything. How about this...I'd be in a state of shock if the 2's are nearly as good as the Treos, but they will most probably do some very special things (based on what I was told by someone who has been hearing them for a while now). |
Ct, Bob. All is good. I don't want to make a big thing out this Maybe I already have. I apologize. I'm just trying to get a feel for how good this new model 2 is. I haven't heard it yet, but I bet it is pretty special. Can't wait to hear a pair! :-) |
M, all is great man. I spoke with someone who's gotten his broken in and he says it's a large upgrade. He's not one for hyperbole, but Richard has never been one to upgrade until the sound is just on another level than the past model. I can't wait to hear them. |
It will be a testament to great design if Richard can continue to improve upon the 1,2 and 3's- Especially considering that the basic design was made more than 40 years ago. My impression of moving from the 3a sigs to the Treo's is definitely an increase in refinement, which I attribute to the cabinet design. But, if Mr. V. can make the bare bones 2's approach the Treo's, I will tip my hat to him.
Bob |
I know some guys with 3a sig w muscular power amps ( think Threshold or Musical Reference RM-200 ) that while ceding ground to the Treo in refinement can and do rock n roll with the low base extension on the 3. The massive sound anchors are a must. fun |
Both running tube ARC preamps, one a REF3, another an SP-15 if memory serves... |
Agree, Jim. The dealer in question liked the 3A's because he loved the bass extension, dynamics, and spl's. Although having two Vandy 2Wq subs with my Treo Ct's, I feel I can get all of the above and more over the 3A's. He also ran ARC amps on his 3's. |
That's what I was going to say. I've heard the Treo's with the subs and it's about 90% of the Quatro's. They were the older subs adn not the new ones though.
|
I am definitely getting the new Sub 3's as soon as I can sell my 2wq's.
My Treo's fit perfectly in the space I can provide and the Quatro is just too deep to fit. The subs fit nicely in a corner near the speaker and aren't too imposing. Getting them EQ'd to the room should get me pretty close to those Quatro's. B |
I bet Bob. That will be a crushing system you have! When we can get Jim to come east......:). |
Gotta be post vaccine but I need to visit the other coast...
finally got my rebuilt SOTA Sapphire running .. fun... |
@ctsooner , @tomic601 , It would be fun to meet up, but I would really like to see/hear Jim's systems. Unfortunately, I hate airplanes, though with the current pandemic, they should be running less than full. Even so, recycled air usually makes me sick. Hmm, perhaps a road trip? I haven't done one in decades, and I'd love to see the country. Plus, my Audi TTS is a pretty nice ride. Bob |
lol... go for it Bob, lol. Would be a fun trip I'm sure. I've done coast to coast in my 20's and loved it. |
I live about 360 miles from Jim's Carlsbad, CA. Condo and have listened to his Treo CT. system. Fabulous! I did a partial cross country trip from Wisconsin to my new home in Arizona. All in a 28 foot Penske Van fully loaded with everything I own. Does that trip count??? lol |
Wow. This is the new travel thread lol. Wife is from WI and two of three kids and family still there. Good VAndy dealer or two in state if I recall. Has anyone been able to audition the new speaker yet? |
@ctsooner , I think it would be a fun comparison if Johnny could set up a comparison of the new 2's vs. the old model. Bob |
I"m sure he can. Not sure if he has sold the older ones |
We will have the New Vandersteen 2Sig 3s in a week or so, need some run in time, and tilt back. My older 2 Sig 2s were shaking in their boots yesterday. Hey, some speakers have feelings too. Cheers, JohnnyR
|
LMAO...You crack me up Johnny. Great stuff. Can't wait to hear your thoughts. I've heard one other's and he LOVES them. I bet the Mimas would work with them nicely too. |
Well Any road trip you survive is a good one !!!! I think the new record NYC to LA is 25 hours in a rental Mustang....
The Driver is a great book documentary run in a highly prepared BMW. Pre COVID.
phone ahead so you get the destination right - angle right for Seattle or Left for Carlsbad
your mileage may vary |
Trish, I and the Pup did Charleston to San Diego in 2013 in 4 days in the GL-550 , there may have been some speeding.... Mid to West Texas you Can have |
@tomic601 , Are you available at both addresses? B |
Never simultaneously, but it feels like that some days... I used to use Alaska Airlines like a commuter bus - not so much now. Right now I am in Seattle trying to wring better performance out of a TT, next week probably California... |
My college friend is a long time pilot with Alaskan Air. She lives on Brainbridge Island. |
