ARC SP-6B Newbie with Questions

Hi, I've just received a refurbished SP-6 back from AR. I bought one used on eBay recently and immediately sent it to AR. They replaced all the power supply caps, the tubes (were original!), and replaced some resistors in the phono section that were causing excessive noise. I received it back a month later. Pretty fast for the audio world I would say! They did not replace the Electrocube coupling capacitors.

I am pleased with the job they diid.

The SP-6B has temporarily replaced the ML#38s preamp in my system. Power Amp is ML#27. I've managed to go through the changes from balanced to single ended without any noise or AC hum pickup degradation. I used a conversion cable I made myself. I tried a Rane BB22 Balance Buddy but in my system there is more noise and distortion than with the conversion cable. I really wanted the BB22 to work. Oh well.

I'm listening to phono now (SL-1200G table, Benz LP-S, homebrewed Cinemax SUT at 10X (470 ohms loading)).

Observations:

1. I had to use the 50dB gain setting (switch on back) to allow me to set the gain pot at about 12 rater than 9:30 with 60dB gain for both phono and digital inputs.

2. ARC uses the Electro Harmonix 12AX7 EH tube in all 6 positions. I asked why and they said it is a good all-arounder tube with very low noise, as needed for the first tube in the phono and line level stages.

3. The sound is....pretty neutral. It is very, very quiet. The lower midrange does have a nice bloom. In stock, I have NOS Mullards from Brent Jessee, JJ, and Gold Lion  that I could swap in. I'm interested in how each type will color the sound. I'm looking for a mellow tube sound without bloat. The EH tubes seem OK, but I'm looking for a more tubey sound. I'll listen to the AR setup for a while and then start swapping. The EH tubes could age a bit since they are brand new, except for the burn-in and testing that AR did.

My questions:

1. Any problems with using the 50dB gain rather than 60dB?

2. Do you agree with AR's tube choice?

3. How will the different tube types I mentioned above alter the sound?

4. Is the #27 a good match for the SP-6? Are there better? Doesn't have to be tubes.

Thanks for your assistance!

Kevin

Congratulations, Kevin! The SP6 is one of ARC’s best early pre-amp/linestages.

The EH are exactly what ARC says they are. The Gold Lion sound is top to bottom oomph. JJ’s will be similar to the Gold Lions.

The NOS Mullard will emphasize mid-range. People like them for the slightly warm and liquid sound. If you got them from Brent Jesse they will be low noise, which will be a big deal in the phono section.

Something to consider--if you want more "tubey", consider substituting 5751 tubes. They are drop-in substitutes for 12AX7’s with about 40% lower gain.

Enjoy...FWIW, I started with an ARC LS3, went to the SP6 when I had a turntable, then I bought an LS2BMKII and modded it. Later, I upgraded to an LS17SE, then a REF5SE, and now have an LS28SE. Once you have an ARC, you never go back :-)

Wow, that's bunch of AR preamps. What power amp did you use with your SP-6? I wonder if there might be a better option than the ML #27. Maybe Class D from Apollon?

I listened to LPs all afternoon today. I noticed that the sound became smoother as time went on. SP-6 or me I wonder. I like what it does with LPs that are quite screechy. My reference LP for this effect is Anita Baker's "Compositions". This is a very good LP. The jazz group behind her makes some fine music, especially the Bass. Her voice sometimes sends me in a hurry to the volume knob. With the SP-6, the sibilants were still there, but were suppressed making the LP very listenable. I guess the #38s pre / #27 power combo is too true to the source.

Great to hear about your rejuvenated classic. Also glad to hear ARC has whittled down the backlog for repair.

@kevemaher -

I paired it with a Sonic Frontiers Power One, which is after many years still an excellent amp. It runs on four KT88 or 6550 power tubes with six 6922 signal tubes. Per Class D- I know people pair their ARC pre's with ARC D-200, with satisfactory results.

You mention Anita Baker's voice-I listen to her CDs and saw her in concert and have the same reaction. Her voice is very forward in the mixes. But damn, what a voice!

I had a SP6-C back in the day. I had to sell it because I was broke.  20 years ago. I think of it often!
