As a long time Alon/Nola owner including the Alon 1, I wanted to add that as mentioned your best option to retain the famed Alon 1 bass slam and balance is to get the woofers rebuilt/reconed by Miller Sound. In fact I'm fairly certain that Carl uses Miller Sound for his driver rebuild services. Here is the link for Miller Sound: http://www.millersound.net/service.htm I have had 2 sets of woofers rebuilt by Miller Sound, one set for my Alon 1's and one set for my Alon Lotus SE mk ll's and both times the quality of rebuild and turn around time were absolutely first rate. Hi Scott, did you get the Alon's back up and running? I just pulled my pair out of storage and am replacing the woofers as well. I bought the woofers new from Carl about a year ago. I'm also replacing the Low Pass woofer caps from the stock electrolytic to a Mundorf MKP cap. I've done the Carl approved Low Pass cap upgrade on my Nola Vipers and Alon Lotus x-overs and it makes for a nice improvement to the bass agility/clarity. Cheers |
Oh man I just saw this...better late than never.... Yes my alons are running well...since the last post I have added a rogue audio cronus magnum II integrated amp and a park audio budgie (arriving today). A clearaudio performance dc turntable and a bluesound node 2. I was hoping to ask the members who have experience with the "Alon open baffle sound" if they have found any other speakers that sound similar but dont require to be 3 feet from the back wall....also a bigger but still tight bass....I have my system in my large bedroom but speakers 3 feet out isn't cutting it |
So, almost 4 years later I have another question. My Alons are 25 years old and I now run them with an integrated tube amp and a tube phono preamp.....I'm curious as to whether having the crossovers rebuilt or would the materials Carl used still be strong after 25 years? I blew the tweeters and Madison sound hooked me up with a pair that I think took the alons yo a new level. |

Is there anyone that can provide advices for Alon Model 1 caps upgrade? I saw the comment about Mundorf MKP cap upgrade for the woofer, what about the tweeter? Is easy to do? I've never done anything like this although I do have a soldering iron and I am capable to do a basic solder between 2 parts. |
honestabe316 - You could try GR Research - Contact | GR-Research. maha88 - The caps in the Alon 1's are Solen which are pretty good. I would look more to replacing the sand cast resistors. I asked Carl if upgrading the Kimber cap in my Alon Lotus SE mk ll tweeter x-overs to a Mundorf SGO and he advised against it as it would shift the balance of the speakers. He did however recommend changing out all the Mundorf MKP caps to the Mundorf MCap Supreme SO in my Nola Viper 1A speakers and to use a MCap SGO in the tweeter circuit which worked out extremely well. |
