All Quiet on the Oppo front?

Many Oppo fans were talking about getting their pre-ordered UDP-205's a month ago, but no new posts as to current status. I haven't heard a word. I kinda thought there would be a July release, but apparently not.

Anybody receive any news from Oppo in the past month?

@uberwaltz
Right! That's what they have been saying on their website. "A shipment coming the end of August and the middle of September". I would like to believe it takes them awhile to notify and prepare shipments. So, maybe the end of August shipment is still being allocated.

In other words, the mid-September allocations have not been notified or shipped yet... I hope.
Bultaco

My understanding was that they have one more shipment going out in September.
No idea how many in that shipment though and as they have already very clearly stated once that lot is gone they are done!
Oppo will post a notice on their website when their stock is out.

“This page will be updated when we have sold out of the OPPO UDP-205.“

@ptss
What day did you receive an invite to purchase?  I thought they were done sending invites by this time.

And yea, you picked up on it. 125 & 250 Pursangs were the dominant force when I was growing up until the Japanese took over.
Just got my email. Paid up. It’s on its way! Yahoo! Will pick up a big-about 80” (I’m only 15 ft from screen) good 4K screen around Dec/Jan. Love good movies. Very interested to hear the CD,SACD,DVD Audio Sound as well. Hoping it lives up to hype but very satisfied getting such a useful unit regardless. Feeling lucky :) Good luck to others waiting)(

I received my invitation to purchase a UDP-205 this afternoon and just have completed the transaction. For what it's worth, I got on the waiting list during the first week of April, then received confirmation that I was on the waitlist on May 9. I thought that they had passed over me, and I'm happy to be able to buy one. There was no way that I was going to pay the $2500 and up prices offered for units recently shipped to other buyers. I hope that those of you who signed up early are able to get one while they are available.
@celander...
Not sure of the exact date, but it wasn't anytime recent.   I submitted my interest pretty early in the process.   I'll see if I can find the original email or confirmation.

Jim

My UDP-205 is on its way. FedEx says I should have it 09.19.18. Can’t wait to receive this and see how it holds up against my Cambridge 851C which I think is a great player for the money. I’ll be surprised for audio if the Oppo is as good but we’ll see or hear and I will report back. I needed a nice video player so I’m sure it will be very good for that nonetheless. I love hearing how people claim this is the Holy Grail for digital playback. Not ever hearing one I could never chime in so here soon I will be able to give my cents for what it is worth... can’t wait.
Just received my Oppo email day before yesterday, and ordered my 205 yesterday.   Arrives next week.

Jim
stereo5, I am sure you will be glad you purchased one of the last 205's. I wasn't going to purchase one either since it can't stream Netflix or YouTube. I figured if I didn't like it I could sell it for at least as much as I paid for it. I am very glad I did purchase now. For me, the picture quality and sound quality is a step up over my 105D. I do have my 105D connected via HDMI IN on the 205 so I can do the streaming. I do have it connected to a 4K projector so that most likely helps. I would agree that my Esoteric K-01x is much better for CD and SACD for stereo but it can't do any video.
Look at it this way Stereo5... whatever you decide after you have had it a while I do not think you will lose money on it, just look at prices of pre-owned ones right now.
You truly cannot lose at all
@kpetrich...................................

i put put the order in this morning.  I still think it to be a frivolous purchase because this will be strictly for Blu-Ray, nothing else.  I already have an Esoteric and McIntosh SACD players.   My wife knows me better than I do and she felt it would gnaw at me if I didn’t buy it.  So, I took her advice and ordered it.
Stereo5, I went through a similar evolution of thought about buying a 205 over the past few months.  I really wanted one because I love listening to music, especially on an excellent sound system.  A 205 was about as close as I would likely get to audio nirvana on my budget.  But as I agonized and waited over the past few months, I began to doubt that I really wanted the 205.  It was my wife who, knowing me too well, encouraged me to be patient--and celebrated with me when the long awaited e-mail came from Oppo last week.  I really don't think you'll regret purchasing a 205, Stereo5.  Buy it and enjoy!
Enjoy Stereo5!

Lovemy8514, congrats, you are approx 3300 in front of myself, lmfao!
Got a response from Oppo today after asking about my odds. 1700 people ahead of me.
I believe it was at least a couple of weeks after they announced they were ceasing production.  I can't find my first email on when I originally
 signed up but I did confirm on May 9.
I spoke too soon!  My wife talked me into purchasing one.  She said I would regret it later if I didn't get one..  I just hope it doesn't need service and parts are available for it.  I would assume if Oppo is going to service them, then they must have parts in stock for them.
Well there you go then, at least you got an offer, more than I fear some are going to receive.
Your call obviously to accept or not, with the recent correspondence from Oppo I would also take a deep long look at whether it would be the right move long term RE. support and parts etc.
Good luck whatever you decide!
I just just received my offer in an email from Oppo.  Thinking of passing on it.  I have until 11:59pm sept 14 to decide.  I’m thinking it’s kind of frivolous at this point.
kpetrich

Real glad you got yours and are happy with it, that is the point.

However as detailed by OPPO replies, it is not a case of taking heart any longer, there are simply nowhere near enough players on the last production runs to meet demand so there ARE going to be a fair number of dissapointed people pure and simple
I'd been reading and posting on the "Oppo prices threw [sic] the roof" thread and hadn't seen anyone else posting since July.  I wasn't sure whether others were still interested.

Yes, the wait has been agonizing, checking my e-mail several times per day since I registered in May.  But take heart, everyone.  On Friday, August 31st at 5:03PM (ET), I just about fell out of my seat when this message popped up in my e-mail:

"Thank you for your interest in the OPPO UDP-205. We have a limited quantity of OPPO UDP-205 Blu-ray players that we are offering to customers that signed up on our Interest List. Click here to learn more about the OPPO UDP-205.  To order the OPPO UDP-205, please use this special link... These links are as unique as you are so please do not share. The links are valid while supplies last and will expire at 11:59 PM PT on September 3, 2018. Due to the limited quantity available, the limit is 1 per customer/household. If you are no longer interested in the OPPO UDP-205 and would like to give up this opportunity, click this link: OPT OUT. Please do not reply to this message."

Within minutes, I purchased my UDP-205 and opted for FedEx second day.  With the holiday weekend, the package only arrived this past Wednesday, September 5th.  I unpacked it just to be sure it was intact.  This past weekend, our house was filled with the beautiful sounds from the 205.  Thus far, my experience with the 2015 as a dedicated stereo player of SACDs, hi-res PCM and DSD downloads, and CDs has been much as I'd read in audio reviews.  In comparison with my 203, the 205 sounds just a bit warmer and has more spacious staging.  It was well worth the wait!  So take heart and be patient.

If I should get the email that my 205 is ready to be shipped, I will probably decline it.  I won’t be using it for anything more than Blu-Ray and since my Samsung 55 inch TV isn’t 4K,  it’s overkill.   I won’t be using the dac as I already have an Uber expensive Esoteric and a McIntosh SACD players.  I also have a built in dac on my McIntosh preamp.

Thinking about out all this, it doesn’t seem to be won’t dropping $1300 plus shipping on it.
Our 205 is of great interest to us- but- let’s not overlook that in the 2nd “quarter” of 2018 Oppo shipped over 28 “million” smartphones.  As in some other audio specialty companies; the money is elsewhere.
I have to agree that I thought their speel on in-house manufactured parts was a little hokey.
Pretty sure vast majority of internal parts would be sourced from sub contractors.

There maybe a few in-house parts though and possibly that is what put the kibosh and making more.

However we have their "official line " now so it is what it is.

Btw my last email to them I made it clear I was sharing this information on Audiogon forums so I very much doubt it is not correct or info that they do not want public.
Thanks for the heads up that your contact is made with service. Never thought to call them— not being an owner. I love sharper minds; would love to trade up!
I have found with a direct inquiry straight to service@OPPO gave very rapid replies.
3 times over last 3 days I have emailed and reply varied from 30 minutes to 2 hours.
@ptss The Oppo service folks respond with info when specific inquiries are sent to them via email. I’ve had good success getting such info twice from them in the past several days.
I don’t think Oppo “manufactured” their parts “ in house”. Not one other manufacturer does as it is simply impractical/inefficient.
Interesting that 1 poster here has such timely informative responses from Oppo while I and obviously countless other hear nada??
I wonder what parts will be unavailable for inevitable repair requests?
The story has gotten “curiouser” ...
Good point Bar81!

If they do not have parts to make any they are going to be hard pressed to have parts to repair any!

May be a blessing to actually NOT be offered one as buying a player, no matter how good, with in built obsolescence...….
Another May 9th verification here. No word from Oppo. Really like my 105 but was also really hoping for a 4K player from Oppo. I'll hold my breath for a few more weeks. If by some magic I am lucky enough to get a player I'll make an unboxing video for the ages!
That message also makes me wonder about their ability to service players going forward.
From OPPO replies to myself I am,not going to be holding my breath...lol

Good luck to everyone else on the wait list!
Well, that is the Oppo official line now. Sounds like one of their suppliers ran into a snafu. Only Q is how many runs remain.
And right after I posted this reply from OPPO when I asked the profit question.

So there is your answer,once these runs are done it is over no matter the demand.

Kevin,

We can't just manufacture players from off the shelf parts. These players have to be built from scratch. Everything from the boards to the aluminum panels, have to be manufactured than assembled. We are no longer in a manufacturing position to manufacture the parts anymore for the final assembly of the UDP-205.

Therefore, we are not able to manufacture any additional players, regardless of the demand.

That is a whole pile of cash OPPO are ignoring.
I don't care how large a global company they are, how do you justify turning down so much easy money?
The margins are much, much higher. Each player, from soup to nuts, can’t be much more than $400 cost to manufacture. That means Oppo is making a profit of $700-$900, depending on tariffs and import and consumer shipping costs.
Stereo5.
If that is true then I am not sure how, if I ran OPPO, I would begin to explain to the shareholders how I knowingly threw away $2 million profit.

Makes me think has to be more to it, say a certain part of parts not available to be able to build more
What sort of profit you think OPPO making on a 205?
$200 or so, sound reasonable?

So $200 x 5000 units equals a cool million dollars of profit they are throwing away.
Not sure how any company can afford to do that in today's hard fought sales age.
@d2girls...............................................
That would be cheating.  Why don’t you try it and then see how long you sit on them?

☝🏻☝🏻Clearly stated, thanks!

I asked Oppo about multiple product purchases from folks having used multiple email addresses. Here is their response:

”We are limiting sales to one per customer/household regardless of email addresses.”

So some of these requests might be turned down once they get similar CC/shipping info.

Those who are buying them simply to flip them at a higher price are likely going to be disappointed. Great value at $1300. Not so much at $2400+.
I can’t speak for others but my process was like this...

1. Click the interest link
2. Receipt of email @ 5 minutes later to confirm email address
3. Receipt of email containing link to purchase

PS: Same process for the UDP-203 purchased. I also own a BDP-83 and a BDP-93.
I do not have email to hand to paste their reply but I did ask today if they would consider more production with a 5000 order database.

Their answer was basically a very polite but firm no.
