AC Power

I have a relatively nice system, but have done nothing with my AC power, with the exception of upgraded PC’s and a cheap iFi plug in power conditioner. My question is multi fold… do I need to do something, and if so what? Dedicated line (15A or 20?)? Quality power conditioner? Both? Which one first? How do you tell?

My system is a combination of HT & 2 channel & I tend to use both simultaneously as I like to watch sports while listening to music.
My amp is (I think) a relatively low draw… Moon 330A, Rythmik sub, BHK pre, Aurender, Qutest w/Sbooster, R11’s. No high power amps are in my future & never listen above 75db. I do currently plug my amp directly into the wall. All my wall warts are gone. For my HT, add a 75” Sony TV, Marantz 7015 AVR & a Klipsch sub (although at zero volume the AVR & sub should not come into play).

I am considering buying the Furman IT-Reference 15i or 20i first as they are well reviewed & are priced very well on Amazon ($1,400 / $1,900). Before I pull the trigger, should I go dedicated power & at what amperage (my nephew, an EE & audiophile thinks I am drawing no more than 5 amps) as that will dictate the Furman model?

Interesting, my nephew thinks neither are worth the investment. His statement: “Do you have appliances on the circuit now? What kind of interference can they inject?...voltage drops would come from current draws...which trip breakers.
Not steady 60hz a good power supply handles. So it all comes back to was the power supply engineer dropped on his head as a child.”

”Personally I think it’s something audio people do when they have run out of gear to buy.”

Any thoughts or recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks!

@erik_squires Thanks for your thoughts. My amp is just 5W class A before it changes to A/B.
I believe the Furman model I selected is their top model & has the features you recommend… but maybe not. Your link goes to a cross Atlantic yacht trip. Can you resend?

@carlsbad2 Thanks for your thoughts. A regenerator is not in my future if for no other reason than space.
On a side note, my nephew graduated with honors from a very well respected engineering school and is currently a distinguished engineer. Not sure of your credentials, but p
rovably not a good idea to start your comments calling him clueless IMHO.

@erik_squires Thanks! That was the unit I thought you were recommending. It would save space & money while providing good voltage regulation, while cleaning power. It does not have additional amp RMS reserves like the reference model. Not sure which is better?
@yogiboy You & my nephew may be (probably are) correct, but I may do this anyway… only downside is $$.
@ditusa Thanks. I had previously read this and most power threads. IMHO, that thread recommendations are overkill for my purposes & my somewhat modest system.

@carlsbad2 Thanks. OK, you certainly have credibility. I figured you were an engineer by your directness. 😀 I am not a form over function guy, (maybe function & form) but when you truly don’t have the space… I would have a bigger amp IF there were space. I did come in with a set of ideas, but I am never absolute & am changing my plans real time based upon the outstanding input from this thread. So, if you have any other recommendations… please.
@jea48 I powered down the circuit which includes my system. It includes all electrical in my Bonus Room… all outlets & 4 switches. On the outlet side, the only thing plugged in (aside from my system) is an LED bulb floor lamp, which I generally don’t use. One switch for the ceiling fans, one for the ceiling fan lights. The other 2 are for spots I don’t use.
Of a potentially more problematic nature, the Bonus Room leg on the fuse box includes 2 furnaces, 2 AC’s, 2 refrigerators. Looks like I need dedicated lines wired to the other leg. Thanks!

@jea48 I personally replaced all the receptacles in my house with good quality (albeit not audio quality) Leviton receptacles and attached all wires with the screw connections. The original install did use the stab, and I discovered during my installation, some had busted… Not good!
Good point on what is on the leg I plug into. I will check. Also good point on the cost of 15 vs 20 amp circuit & and multiples thereof. The only issue is my fuse box is becoming overloaded & 2 or 3 20A circuits may require a complete new box.
@erik_squires Thanks!

@12many Thanks, I was also, but he has apologized. You are correct, sometimes I float back and forth between being focused on the game & the music. But also many times I am just listening to music without any TV. Most of the time, my system sounds excellent. Sometimes it sounds slightly harsh. But hard to tell if that is the recording, my room (8 windows) or my hearing aids. As all hearing aid audiophiles know, every thing you buy from a component standpoint is funneling through these tiny digital devices. 😒 So what I want is to continue to improve my sound through judicious well informed investments.
@tony1954 You are correct!

@052rc Thank you, very true. I will look at the cable company.

BTW, on my space issue, my Bonus Room where my system is installed is large. However, there are 8 large windows, a large L shaped couch, a pool table & several components I didn’t list CD, DVR, DVD, Harmony hub, modem, headphones, phono stage, center channel speaker, TT, & 7.2 speakers.
Getting rid of the HT or pool table or a smaller couch is not in the cards, as I enjoy them all. Can’t do anything about the windows & have to place my racks (one low and long, one tall) between them.
The power conditioner will need to be hidden behind my long rack by pulling it out 5 more inches.
But I buy the finest components I can, given my space restrictions.

Normally I would be playing golf, but my club is closed on Monday’s. You gave me something interesting to do today. Thanks!

I am convinced I need both 2 dedicated 20A power sources & power conditioning and/or regulation.
I would like to do to one at a time to access benefits. Which one would you do first?

@jea48 Thank you for your thoughts. You are correct, I had assumed that the right side was one leg, and left the other. What you said makes sense. However, I had read in other threads on power that one should avoid installing your dedicated audio circuit on a leg with major appliances. Given what you said, I guess that is not possible.
I do have some tandem breakers installed as the breaker box was full when my house was built with 30 slots. The 5 tandem breakers have since been added (gazebo, additional outdoor & garage outlets, etc).
I don’t know if there is a limit on tandem’s or a limit on total circuits, but was told by a qualified electrician (maybe lying), that I was close to or out of additions. The main panel is in the garage.
As the SME, which do you recommend first, wiring or conditioner? Thanks!

Unfortunate. It appears all the Furman AR’s are designed to be rack mounted with no feet. I thought I could stack the 1800 AR model on my AVR by adding feet (alleviating my space issues), but apparently not.
The 2400 AR (20A) rack ears are not even removable adding 2” further I would have to move my rack from the wall if I put it behind.

Back to the drawing board. Any other brands that have voltage regulation?

@amtprod I do have space for that… good thought! Only problem is 4 new power cords required to work. Considering… Thanks

@mbarrett635 I hadn’t considered they had a smaller unit. You are correct. Be a shame to hide it behind my rack, more money than I wanted to spend, but will work. Thanks

@jea48 Thanks! Good catch.
@erik_squires I know I probably don’t need 20A, but as stated earlier in the thread, the only incremental cost is the heavier gauge wire. Regardless, I didn’t realize the plugs were different. Are the rear plugs also different, requiring replacement PC’s?
As the owner of the 15A model, any issues with plug spacing for large billet plugs? The left bank looks good, but the right looks tight.
Assuming sufficient space for large plugs, I will order the 15A version. Thanks

@erik_squires Agreed, the P2400 has plenty of space for audiophile PC’s… one of my reasons for choosing it. The P1800 is a different story on the right leg… ego the potential issue. Thanks

OK, my decision has been made. I am sold on the AR features. I will purchase the Furman P 2400 AR vs the 1800 for the following reasons:

1. Both have the AR features

2. It will be compatible with both 15A short term & 20A long term

3. The spacing of the rear outlets should allow large audiophile plugs

4. The captive (why captive?) PC is 12GA vs 14GA for the 1800

5. It is larger & may be more robust

5. Only $300 more on Amazon

I will install it vertically behind my long rack. That will allow me to use my existing PC’s & provide good spacing between my components and it.

I will order it this afternoon after I return from golf. Please let me know if you see any issues with my logic.

Thank you all for your outstanding recommendations! Great thread. I learned a lot from very knowledgeable people!

Note: The 1800 AR listed on Amazon may in fact be the 1800 PF A, a non AR model. While it is described as an AR, if you zoom in on the picture it is a PF A. Most reviewers describe the AR features, but one flatly stated it was a PF A. Regardless returnable if not an AR.

One other question… can the Furman be near my speaker or interconnect cables and not cause problems? For reference, my cables are Transparent +… very well shielded, interconnects are Mogami 2549. Is that another issue?

I am back to buying the P-2400 for all the reasons I stated earlier…+ not only spacing of outlets, but number of outlets. At 39lb, It is substantially more robust than the 15lb P-1800. It retails for more than $1,500 more than the P-1800 but sells for only $300 more.
I can address the compatibility issue. This seems to be a no brainer. Thanks to all!

Quick question. Should I plug my Marantz 7015 AVR into the Analog or Digital side of my new conditioner? It is analog, but performs digital processing via HDMI for my home theater, so I am thinking digital. Agreed? Thanks

@jea48 both my DAC & streamer have LPS’s, but I would treat them as digital… correct? Thanks for all your outstanding help.

@jea48 I read that… sounded good but wasn’t sure what it meant. I assume based upon your reaction, that is good. 😃

@carlsbad2 A piece of equipment I purchased & looking forward to receiving as a result of this forum. Most people on the various forums are knowledgeable and helpful and have tact, but understand their recommendations may not be followed.
Not you. Putting down decisions is so you. Go away.

@wturkey +1

@kennyc My planned placement behind my system should allow the continued use of my existing upgraded PC’s. Thanks

@carlsbad2 You appear to be a person that gets in a hole & keeps digging to justify your arrogance. Yes, I am fully aware of the 2400 capabilities. If semi extreme voltages occur 125v+, 115v-, the unit corrects to 120v. Anything else, my well designed PS Audio/Simaudio power supplies can easily handle. It will also provide conditioned isolation between my digital & audio components at a price my wife can live with.
@squared80 You may be correct, but IMHO you are not. There is no objective proof, but my subjective experience differs.

My new conditioner arrives today.  I’m excited to try it out. Thanks

OK, I have had 2 days with my new Furman P-2400;AR. A couple observations:

1. It is heavy. Carrying it up the stairs in its box was a chore for this 72 year old.
2. it fit very nicely on its side behind my low long rack between my speaker cables and interconnects. Other than a low level hum (now gone) when I first turned it on, it is absolutely quiet with no interference. Outstanding
3. I had bought some oak to make stand which turned out to be unnecessary as it will stand on its own with PC’s connected.
4. I am using all 12 rear outlets, 6 for analog, 6 for digital. There is space for wall warts and large audiophile power cords. The connections are tight.
5. To make it compatible with my 15A circuit, I installed a Leviton 20A outlet… not to code, but absolutely safe. As most suspected, I am drawing no more than 6A with everything running.
6. My voltage tends to be slightly high 121-122V during the day. Last night (my wife lights our house up like a Christmas tree, and I have 60 IOT’s installed), it dropped to 115V & was immediately adjusted to 120V. I always wondered why my system sounded best during the day. Outstanding

7. I had previously plugged my amp directly into the wall. I currently have it plugged into the Furman & can detect no loss in dynamics.

Sound: Everything sounds better. Clearer, darker, more robust yet delicate during soft passages. Significant improvement in low volume listening. While both improved, digital improved more than analog, which I find interesting. Apparently my Aurender and Qutest w/Sbooster Ultra like clean full power. I may never listen to vinyl again… probably will but no longer need to for the best sound.
It is an excellent purchase & I could not be happier. As Eric stated, price performance is fantastic. Thank you to everyone but especially @erik_squires & @jea48 for your outstanding guidance and knowledge. I am much closer to my audio nirvana. 😃

One more thing. When I originally set up the Furman, I decided to listen to Adele 30 vinyl “All night parking”. The clarity of Adele’s voice, the Erroll Gardner opening scratchiness & deep bass are very telling. I have listed to it 100’s of times.
It sounded terrible, No clarity, weak bass… problem. I immediately went to stream with everything sounding great.
Apparently, in my haste to set it up, I accidentally plugged my turntable into the digital side of the Furman. Once I rectified all was good.
2 things. This demonstrates how dirty digital can be and its negative influence on analog. Digital & analog isolation is critical… those who recommend it are apparently correct…

@erik_squires Erik, I have a $50 APC surge protector power strip for my modem, CD player, DVD & VCR on the same circuit as the rest of my equipment on my 2400. Except for the modem, the rest are seldom if ever used.
I assume you would recommend further isolation and the Furman power strip would do that? Thanks!

@erik_squires Thanks! I somewhat misspoke. It is a mesh router with an Ethernet backbone, not a modem. My (fiber) modem & main router are downstairs. I also have my HT sub plugged into my secondary power.
I am less concerned (famous last words) with a lightning strike as my house is surrounded by trees twice the height of my house. I am much more concerned with a tree falling on my house. 😒
I will order the Furman PST-8D for only $20 more than the standard PST-8. It will provide conditioned power via 2 isolated power banks, not only to isolating my sub from digital, but provides future protection as my TT may move there in the future.

Please let me know if I have any flaws in my logic. Thanks again!

@immatthewj The Furman specs for the 2400 are:

10 ft. captive 3/12 AWG, black cord with NEMA 20 plug. Mine is still gathered, as I only needed 3 feet, but would think 10’ is accurate.

define gathered. I would not coil the the remaining 7ft in a neat tight small diameter coil. Imo, a small coil would act as an inductor.

@jea48 I pulled just enough out to plug it in. The coil is crammed between the 2400 & the LPS for my DAC. Not sure what an inductor does, but if I can’t cut it, not sure of a solution. My other PC’s were custom made to length to reduce clutter & interference. It is very populated back there with speaker wires for 9 speakers, interconnects, the other power cords & a LPS. I am actually shocked I am not hearing negative effects from this. Will not spreading it out risk effecting one or more of these? Would I not be hearing negative effects if is an inductor? My system has never sounded better… at least on the digital side… it sounds so good I haven’t been listening to vinyl.

@raysmtb1 Not an uncommon perspective. Interesting you don’t believe in power improvements as you have a nice system. You seem to believe in vibration isolation, but not power. I only know that the 2400 without question improved the overall sound of my system. YMMV

@erik_squires My new (arrived today) Furman PST-8D & has further cleaned up my system. Not as dramatic as the 2400, but audible.
I assume it was the conditioned and isolated power to the router feeding my Qobuz streaming, but you would know better than me. Got it open box on eBay for just over $100.00. Great addition. Thanks again for your sage advice. I am getting close to end stage… maybe.🤔
