A little test

Spin/stream El Macho from Mark Knofler's Flying to Philadelphia.  At the 17 sec mark an interesting instrument (for a rock/pop song)  comes in for a few bars and then reappears throughout the track.  What is it?  No typical Knofler electric guitar on this track either.
