A Basic But Meaningful Article On Subwoofers.

Yes Erik, It is hard to get across the importance of using a two way crossover and not the low pass filter most subs come with. You easily miss 1/2 the benefit of using subwoofers. There are some companies that offer a complete crossover with their subwoofers. Velodyne offers complete crossovers with their digital series. 
Trinnov is a very advanced company. They started making commercial gear. Their digital signal processing and "room control" which is really speaker control is the most advanced available today using 64 bit processing where others use 32 or 48 bits. There is no need to dither their volume control. 

I have to say I skimmed it and I agree with most of it. 

In particular, the idea that crossover integration for the average audiophile is way too hard. Also this line:

You might be better served crossing them over at 75-80 Hz in order to free up their available excursion for midbass and higher frequencies.

Absolutely true for many speakers.  Too many audiophiles try to be purists, and crossover as low as they can but in fact 80 Hz is a wonderful sounding crossover point by comparison.
