Blues records article in Sunday NY Times
Luckily, lots of this material has become available from Yazoo and others. I recommend everyone who is interested in exploring the ultra-rare pre-war 78 game check out a 2-cd set called "The Stuff that Dreams Are Made Of" and a disc called "Down I...
New vinyl's noisy little secret
Mapman - Be sure your stylus isn't chipped or damaged and scraping the groove.
New vinyl's noisy little secret
Here is the link to part 1. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8xwe-Mt99DwIt is an interesting video, I've had it on a DVD for some time and was glad to see it's now on line. YouTube should give you links to Part 2 and also to a more succinct video on...
New vinyl's noisy little secret
There's a bit of misinformation in this thread. If you want to understand the pre-tape "mastering" process, watch a two-part video on ewetube called "Rca Victor records manufacturing process" and you can see it for yourself step by step.
VPI Scoutmaster Super Platter
Audio company's explanations almost always sound good. That's why we went rim drive to belt drive to direct drive to belt drive to rim drive, all of which had good explanations. Every few years we convince ourselves that the prior "generation" wer...

How to get a mono signal for whole house audio
It's a bad idea to run stereo recordings in mono because you often will lose music. I'm not talking about soundstage type of stuff. When you sum stereo recordings to mono there are often phase cancellations, depending upon the care the engineer too...

Cleaning smaller records
I tried it. It didn't work too great. The top record was shellac. Maybe it'd work better with a thinner 45.I also tried covering up the unneeded part of the suction tube with masking tape. Worked somewhat.
Best set up for 78's ?
Keep in mind that when you listen to 78 transfers on CDs and vinyl, they've been processed, sometimes painstakingly, in a manner that can't ordinarily be done in real time playback. It at least requires some extra processing gear that we haven't t...
Best set up for 78's ?
Mapman, you are on target. Important things are higher mass playback setup, variable speed, 78 stylus, and even a cheap equalizer will do. Picking approriate gear is important, but matching for sytem synergies and balancing "PRaT" vs harmonic rich...
Ripping 700 CD's to HD using FLAC-How much space?
Allow me to ask another question. If you've got 700 cds you can fit them on a terebite drive without any compression and still have room for hundreds more. So why deal with compression? Unless you buy new music at a truly maniacal pace, by the tim...
Ripping 700 CD's to HD using FLAC-How much space?
What's preferable to use, AIFF or FLAC? iPods don't read FLAC do they? Which provides greater levels of compression?
Best set up for 78's ?
Mapman: DiamondCut is superior software for transfering 78s to digital. If one is mainly concerned with transfering to digital, then DiamondCut will handle all the eq curves, speed adjustment etc. and you don't have to worry about the extra gear a...
