Replace Amp or Preamp?
I think your preamp is definitely the weak link here. The problem is a good active preamp isn't cheap and I think it will be difficult to get one within your budget. (Understand, that's just my personal opinion. Also, difficult is not impossible. ...

"I have my equipment in my basement and I have not really noticed this issue before but as I change equipment I seem to be listening to my music louder. I have no idea how much louder but maybe 30%. I have never listened to my music really loud. B...
subwoofer suggestions
Given your needs and the size of the room, maybe you should look for a sub designed for music. You seem to be after quality over quantity. Also, why not consider MA? They make a sub to match your speakers.
What would give the best overall improvement
"12-30-13: Last_lemmingHow do you figure changing my speakers to give me a better bang for the buck? I like my speakers! I like the way they sound on my digital and I like the way they sound with a sound on the vinyl."Great answer.
Shocking 3D sound in 2 channel
"Can all speakers do this if set up right? Are there some that do this without fail? Was I just imagining it?"Not all speakers can do that. Some are better than others. However, all the other components in a system contribute to the quality of ima...
Speaker decision $3000-3500...help
I like the Vandersteen 3's. The only caution I would give you is that you have to match them to other components carefully. They're very revealing and will easily point out any flaws in your system.
Speaker Set-Up: Use of a Plumb Bob
"I tilt my speakers slightly forward to reduce the vertical off-axis angle."What are the before and after measurements of the vert off axis angle?

Why would you want to get a preamp that old? Generally speaking, preamps have gotten much better overall between then and now.
Inexpensive 2 channel in-wall for front? Polk?
"12-27-13: Holmejr"What I like in traditional speakers"That would be out of my price range :) Thanks!"I don't know if I get your post. You list some Polk speakers as examples. They're not too expensive and I can only assume that you like them beca...
tube buffers
The problem with a tube buffer is that it can only alter the sound. Essentially, its an EQ with 1 setting. It can't add anything. It just covers up problems areas in the music/playback system that some people find pleasing. If you use one and like...
Inexpensive 2 channel in-wall for front? Polk?
I would look at brands that you already know and like for traditional speakers, and then see if they make any in wall speakers. Seems like a reasonable place to start.
Project Xtension 12 or VPI Classic 3
"While I do agree with this, personal tastes are also critical as to what is "better"."Another good point. I think I can put this into "better" context. "When someone says one is better than the other they need to also be able to say they have hea...

I have the exact same TT setup. Its pretty hard to beat. Keep what you have and get the VPI speed control.
Project Xtension 12 or VPI Classic 3
"When someone says one is better than the other they need to also be able to say they have heard both in the same system."I agree. That's an excellent point. Also, one other thing you really need to do is try the new TT setup (or at least the cart...
Tube preamp for SS amp
Charles1dad,I wasn't finding fault with you in any way. Sometimes I can be a bit direct in how I word things. I kind of know what I'm doing now, but it was a long and expensive journey to get here. I've made just about every mistake an audiophile ...
