Saddended by the death of Maurice Gibb
VH1 re-aired the edition of "Storytellers" featuring the Bee Gees (made in '95) last night. It was just Barry on amplified acoustic guitar with Robin doing only vocals and Maurice on keys or guitar (aided by one backup keyboardist is all, though I...

I haven't heard the Talons, but I used to sell Maggies (pre-3.6). I personally love the Maggie sound, especially for acoustic music and vocals, but would tend to agree in general with your salesman's assessment. However, I don't consider these asp...
Criminy, I've reached 300 threads
Can't believe it...I started this thread in October, and now I've just crossed over the 500 mark...I think I may need to reexamine my priorities...
Early 1970's rock: Name some of your favorites
Great story, Avideo (but who'da thunk they were frat boys?)! BTW, did you ever see The Golliwogs (pre-Creedence) play? Or The Torquays, The Syndicate of Sound, or any of the other great SJ/SC area bands of the early-to-mid-60's (how about Sly)? An...

The Flaming Lips are Go Manifesto
Hope they do (grow on you, that is)...No, I'm not sure which EP you're referring to (I don't have any Lips on vinyl), but have you tried researching it on their website? Even you can't find it among the releases listed there, you could post the qu...
Thank You, Mickey Finn
Tweakgeek: What, you've given up on anyone else viewing this thread already?! ;^) Yeah, anything's possible - I mean, Tom Lyle reviews gear for Soundstage, fer Chrissakes. Becoming a damn audiophile is about the most un-punk thing a guy could do, ...

Thank You, Mickey Finn
That's sad news, thank you for sharing it with us. Marc Bolan's and Finn's sound together was a unique and instantly identifiable combination. One of those little signature idiosyncracies, like The 13th Floor Elevators' jug player or The Lovin' Sp...
Do I need or want preamp tone controls
Get them if you like, but just be aware that they will always lend somewhat the same signature to any program material you try to use them on, since as Sean says they are not very flexible in their action. And I would skip them altogether if there...
Low end TT vs. Hi end CD
As Dennis and others of you know, I have had an SL-1200 as my only TT all of my adult life. It's not something I'm proud of or anything, it's just that nothing about its performance has prompted me to want to upgrade it as I have steadily done wit...
Why aren't all CDs created equally?
Allow me to offer a slightly different perspective: If you are focusing on the sound above the music, something's wrong. *Most* of what I play is not recorded to anything like audiophile standards. The day I require that, will be the day I lose mo...
Q: Does the number of tubes affect the sound?
The best answer I could give a "newbie" - and one that applies to any kind of gear at all, not just tube amps - is that *everything* affects the sound. That means yes, the number and type of output devices will affect the sound of an amp, but not ...
