Flaming Lips and Beck on Austin City Limits
Finally saw it last night, didn't much care for it. For anyone who tuned in and wondered why I made a fuss, just take my word that this Beck stuff does not give any indication of what The Lips do on their own terms with their own material. Oh well.
Nick Cave fans?
Tweakgeek: Just don't stare at the cover illustration too long, and then hit the road thinking you're Rat Fink, straight outta Ed "Big Daddy" Roth! :-)
Question for Velvet Underground fans
Ivan, I'm insanely jealous (and I'm a guy who knows a woman who was at The Beatles concert held at the old armory here in DC in 1964 - the year I was born!).Sarah, flattery will get you everywhere, but no, I'm just me. I could never write about cu...

Peter, I still play and own about 1/3 the number of guit's you do, but they are all a little more of the 'out' variety than the LP's, 335's, and Strat's. I live in the late Mr. Gatton's home base area of DC, and saw him play a few times live, even...
Early 1970's rock: Name some of your favorites
Just as I suspected - although there are few common nominations I can hang with (Mott, Floyd, Dan, Crimson, Hawkwind) most of what people like from this era serves mostly to confirm my general indictment of the time, IMO. Oh well, TEHO! (Despite T...
Early 1970's rock: Name some of your favorites
Iggy & Stooges, New York Dolls, Modern Lovers, Alice Cooper, T. Rex, Sweet, Slade, MC5, Big Star, Badfinger, Faces, Wings, JLPOB, Rod Stewart (only in the 1st 1/2 of 70's!), Beach Boys (yes, even through 1st 1/2 of 70's!), Blue Ash (first reco...
Question for Velvet Underground fans
Au contrare, Onhwy61, true Velvets fans hold them all in high regard, and you are obviously one.Sean, if you want to appreciate the roots of alternative rock (in the original sense of the phrase), you need to throw caution to the wind and get them...
5 most recognizable voices in American music?
Wmcmanus: "Interesting" is right - "American" most certainly does *not* include Bob Marley (Jamaican) or any of The Beatles (British). No matter where they eventually came to live after their careers and importance were already assured, they were ...

When I had a late-70's Marshall 50w master volume half-stack with a 1960 model bass cabinet of an older (late 60's/early 70's?) vintage, I often thought about leaving off the back panel, but didn't know that people did this, and didn't want to hav...
Review: Martin Logan Odyssey Speaker
I have heard generically similar results (over-coloration, poorly integrated bass) from dipolar electrostat hybrids (M-L's and SoundLabs) in the homes of audiophiles, as well as wanna-be audiophiles who seemingly just got taken with the looks. I h...

Open back, hmm...I like the sound of that. Is the back panel vented, or just removed?

You'll have to tell us how the new lines make the 'Paul thru the Marshall sound... :-)
Mark Levinson Gurus: Vintage Three Mile Island
No no, clearly what you need to do is get yourself a set of the older original Maggie 3-panel jobs and some external X-overs, and TRI-amp them, using a separate monoblock for each panel for a grand total of 6 amp towers plus 6 speaker panels, not ...
Unheralded Sideman
Yeah, they're sidemen, absolutely, even though they've done work under their own names as leaders. I like 'em better as sidemen.
Sonus Faber Cremona
I always get a little suspicious when Sam raves about something* to the degree he did with the Cremona, and he never claimed to have auditioned the Amatis (though none of this is going to matter in my world utlimately - SF products are generally t...
