Speakers: Anything really new under the sun?
The mass production of neodymium magnets has allowed some worthwhile improvements in driver design. Borresen Acoustics has done some interesting work in lowering the inductance of its bass/mid unit through the elimination of iron. That's just tw...
I heard a costly system from Esoteric.
@jetter - hearsay is just that.
Is it me? Will I ever be satisfied?
Godducks44 The room is close to square, which is not great acoustically. Judicious acoustic treatment will help, as will getting the speakers away from room boundaries. Have you gotten less satisfied with the tonal balance of the system since th...
MC901 monoblock tube matching Q
For simplicity, it's easier to just order replacement tubes from McIntosh, as needed. I certainly wouldn't go replacing tubes until they have exceeded their normal life or, alternatively, fail prematurely. From the owner's manual: The MC901 wil...
Buying used vs new speakers from a technology perspective
There has probably been a bigger improvement in more affordable speakers over the decades as improved materials and techniques from higher end speakers trickles down. The Kef LS50 is a good case in point where the driver technology is much better ...
Madman! Digital vs Vinyl
@2dougthebiker - to answer your question, with €7k invested in your analogue front end, it is definitely worth investing in a quality phono stage - pricewise/quality, up to something like the Parasound JC3+, I would say. But will €10k of analogue...
I heard a costly system from Esoteric.
For what it's worth, I have experience of all the Esoteric CD player lines from the Grandioso downwards. They are superb sounding machines. The current XD models which have the newer Atlas transport mechanism and the Master Sound Discrete DAC are ...
I heard a costly system from Esoteric.
jackhifiguy - did you actually listen to the system with speakers?
Does carpet deaden the sound too much?
Recording studios have more reflective construction because they are aiming to create a natural reverb that adds dimensionality to the sounds of instruments and helps them gel together in a mix. Recording studio control rooms are designed complet...
I heard a costly system from Esoteric.
@jackhifiguy. I really don't see the point of this exercise. The amplifier is designed to drive loudspeakers and primarily to be listened to in that configuration. No one in their right mind would buy an expensive integrated amplifier to listen p...
Turntable - The Next Step
Above the Rega P3, as a number of posters have suggested, Clearaudio and Technics are very strong performers in the middle of the market. The Technics has great drive and pace. The comparable Clearaudios are more refined tonally. As regards Linn,...
Looks like PS Audio has a hit on their hands with the new speaker
Whatever about the sound (to be determined), I find the rounded bottom cognatively dissonant. One expects a curve to be on the top of an object. Imagine a neoclassical building where the romanesque windows were upside down. Also, I really can't s...
How to make small room sound bigger
Having a small room myself, one has to accept that there are limitations to how "big" the room can sound. And as has been observed above, lots of reflections will make the room sound bigger but not better. Really, as with any room, a judicious us...
What stereo equipment do respected musicians listen to?
I don't want to prolong this in an unnecessary tit for tat but I do feel compelled to respond on three points. 1. I said that I have listened to a "good few recordings i.e. many - not a "few recordings". Perhaps I was being too understated in my ...
Speaker system
Get a used PA system. I will sound rubbish but at least it will be loud and it will sound better than driving a small hi fi system to destruction  - and it will last longer.
