Are your current amps and other gear the best you've ever had? Amps are the only thing in the system that I’m absolutely positively certain will never be replaced. Custom 2 x 6BL7 + 4 x KT77 monoblocks (with $7K worth of Dueland caps!) built by master builder Charlie Cocci, old pal of Gary Dodd and Danny Ritc...
Threshold SA/1 Your choice is between the company that will insure that they produce as close to original sonics as possible and the man who will insure that they produce the best sonics possible. I know what my choice would be: Soderberg all the way. Have a St...
Looking for a Tube preamp with Tube Rectifier stage <= $/£/€ 3000 Just want to thank Ralph Karsten (atmasphere) for his consistency and generosity in sharing both factual and experiential information regarding audio reproduction...of which the above is an example...always a worthwhile read. Thank you!
Hi end tube preamps, it’s all about functionality!! Right. Don't know the price yet, but I'll pay more than I am asked to pay for it in order to compensate the builder for the ridiculously low price of the awesome two 2x6BL7 & 4xKT77 monoblocks that he built for me.Agreed about the single tube...
Hi end tube preamps, it’s all about functionality!! Have a tube preamp being built for me right now. Has 1 tube (6BL7GT), one knob (volume) and 2 toggle switches (on/off and input 1/2). Bet it will sound better than any "high end" preamp.
Thoughts on vintage Accuphase Bought the P300, C200 and T100 as a group from (used electronics retailer) Thompson's Electronics in Eugene, OR in about 1996 for $900. Smokin' deal. Learned that the trio was on consignment from David Ogden Stiers (Major Winchester from M*A*S*H...
Filter capacitance-how does it relate to amplifier performance? I apologize if I’m veering this thread off course, but wanted to add that the power supply in the Cocci tube amps is unregulated in order to provide speedy power delivery to the audio circuit, while the input section of the audio circuit includes ...
Filter capacitance-how does it relate to amplifier performance? Thanks George! I really think a lot of people have really missed the boat with Matrix 801s, myself included for a long time....the oft repeated 'need for big solid state amplification' just isn't so in my experience...and in fact, is contraindica...
Filter capacitance-how does it relate to amplifier performance? Hoping Ralph will comment on the situation with my custom built 100 watt 4 x KT77 monoblocks (built by Charlie Cocci): when I took off the bottom plate to admire Charlie's work, I was shocked to see only 2 x 47mF 630 volt capacitors in the power s...
For anyone who moved from tubes to solid state — a question Correction: the Matrix 801 Series 2 speaker is nominal 8 Ohms (not the 6 Ohms that I had reported). Specifications:https://www.stereophile.com/content/bw-matrix-801-series-2-loudspeaker-specifications With 3 minima of about 6 Ohms. Measurements:...
For anyone who moved from tubes to solid state — a question "They don’t do it well, so why do it?."Somebody is referring to generalities...
For anyone who moved from tubes to solid state — a question @mapman: Certain that no maintenance is needed; had the amp back to Jon about two years ago...just to check bias and evaluate overall performance. He made a minor bias adjustment and declared it "operating perfectly." And remarkably, the tube am...
For anyone who moved from tubes to solid state — a question Just to demonstrate the reality that while there are generalities that are generally true, there are also instances where the generality isn't true:The xenoliths have B&W Matrix 801 Series 2 speakers with North Creek crossovers. These speaker...

Tube amp output taps; use both? Thanks for the reply Ralph; you're one of the members that I know I can trust the validity of technical information from. Your point about a coloration not found in real life is well taken; thank you. By tightly controlled, I meant that cone excu... |
