Love getting new equipment, hate the break-in A genuine new, be it OS or current production, signal tube will demonstrate improvement in performance with time, to a point upon which it levels off, relative to initial performance.
oldest tube(s) in your system Yea, I figure 45 or 2A3 or similar would be about the oldest tube type still heating listening spaces. Funny that as those are power tubes; would've thought signal tubes would be more likely to be oldest still in use. All of our power tubes are ...
oldest tube(s) in your system @audioman58 what kind of tubes are the RCA and Amperex and what are they in? Other oldies in our system are: 2 x 1952 Sylvania T-plate 6BL7 GTA and 2 x 1958 Western Electric D-getter JW 2C51.
oldest tube(s) in your system Zoiks; 82 years old! It’s not a competition, but wow, that’s old...and no doubt great.
oldest tube(s) in your system @noromance Beautiful piece of gear! Thanks for sharing the photo. Love the eye tube too! Does it ’close’ (or is it open?) at 325v?
Love getting new equipment, hate the break-in I like burn-in. What else gets better as it is used? Doing so with a pair of NOS NIB 1958 Western Electric JW 2C51 now. I think it’s astonishing that such things exist 67 years after being made. They existed before I did...shoot my parents had...

Anyone use a 5687 with adapter in place of a 6922/6DJ8/7308/6N23P? This punk's not feeling lucky 😊. I'll stick with 6DJ8 and variants and adaptered 5670 and variants. Thanks for your input jea48; it helped me make a sane decision.
Anyone use a 5687 with adapter in place of a 6922/6DJ8/7308/6N23P? Well I’m wrong again...means I’m learning :) Can get to 36Ah with onboard batteries: https://www.ebay.com/itm/335892876560?_trkparms=amclksrc%3DITM%26aid%3D1110013%26algo%3DHOMESPLICE.SIMRXI%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20201210111452%26meid%3D195dc9e5742a4...
Anyone use a 5687 with adapter in place of a 6922/6DJ8/7308/6N23P? The preamp uses two 6922, one per channel, albeit only one triode per double triode is used. It's quite remarkable to me that this, what I think is the only audio gain structure of it's kind, generates 16 dB of gain. Regarding Ah; I've gone to L...
Anyone use a 5687 with adapter in place of a 6922/6DJ8/7308/6N23P? @jea48 ; thank you for that info. I knew the 5687 had a higher heater current than the 6922, but given that the device I'm contemplating running the adaptered 5687 in is battery powered, it doesn't have a power transformer. I suppose that the re...

Suggestions for a holographic preamp? Turn any 6DJ8/6922/7308/6N23P based preamp into a more holographic machine by replacing those tubes with Western Electric 396a/2C51 (with adapters). edit: the preamp won't be more holographic, but the sounds coming out of your speakers will be 😀

Would You Rather Own A Good SET Amp, Or A Great Push Pull Amp? Wonderful contribution from Ralph as normal; thank you. Will just offer that PP ultralinear can be awesome. With TV tubes (that were not available when vintage amps were built and that no current tube amp builders specify...wrongly IMO) that swi... |
