Different subwoofer settings for different albums?
I use 2 RELs and adjusted them with test tones to match the main speakers...the tests tones really were a starting point to let me know where the main speakers drop off and my trusty ears do the rest of the evaluation. I did put "chicken head" kno...
More watts or better power ?
Get a much larger amp and sell the XA25 to me.
Speaker Road Trip
Well designed horn speakers aren’t "shouty" at all, any more than non horns are all reticent and dull...generalizations don’t further a discussion, they’re just lazy (except this generalization regarding generalizations).
Reasonably sensitive speakers for tube amps, max $2k/pair, new or used
Klipsch Heresy IIIs...if you can find a pair they'd likely be well under 2 grand. I tried the IVs and Dirty Weekends last winter and rejected both and kept my Heresy IIIs. Great speakers.
The best tube poweramp. . What do you think about ?
Also a Had fan...my fave of all time Inspire Firebottle HO (it's a HO...says it right on the front) SEP with Heresy IIIs (better than the IVs for my tastes) sounds astonishingly good although nearly unobtanium if you desire one...so...uh...forget ...
Thinking of adding a sub---maybe not?
I use 2 RELs and agree with REL's philosophy of letting the main speakers work to their natural limits and simply dial in the subs where the main speakers drop off due to their design. And use 'em in mono to keep standing waves at bay...works for ...
Lay Off the Newbies!
I think we should treat both the old and new posters with equal insulting distain and not single out anyone relative to age or experience.
Amp keeps shutting off
I had a similar issue with an Aegir using efficient speakers, and they sent me another one that also shut off weirdly (not as frequent as the first, but still)...sent it back. Could have been triggered by my "stacking" REL sub cables (2) on the ou...
Tube Preamp - What to buy?
I'm surprised Schiit gets no props in this conversation...A tubester Freya +, Loki (tone control if you want) and a Mani phono preamp all new and warrantied for about half the OP's number. I'm a Freya/Loki user and both are superb sounding high en...
Upgrade from Schiit Bifrost 2?
Schiit has always responded to my emails, and their gear has generally exceeded my expectations (sent the Aegir back as it didn't work for me)...including with my Bifrost 2. Works perfectly, sounds great. I guess they like me...they send extra sti...
Speaker placement
SPL readings in the corners are perhaps useful if you're going to be hanging out in the corner. Note that most rooms have their own sound and hey...embrace it...the world is full of rooms, and much of what is "music" is performed in them. I like r...
How long can preamp tubes last?
450 hours a year? My cables take longer than that to break in (so the manufacturer says). I've had the same NOS GEs in my Freya for a long time (2 billion hours or so), and the interesting and somewhat unique thing about the Freya is that you can ...
Will the placement of casters on speaker stands degrade the performance
The only reasonable solution is to dampen the floor with water, freeze it, and attach ice skates to your speakers.
Marty Stuart on Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers:
Brunswick is the only town I know of named after a bowling ball. Petty wrote amazing simple songs that just worked and the Heartbreakers were great. But best band? As Zappa said (about guitar players, but still...), "It's not a pushup contest." I ...
SLOT LOADING CD MECHANISMS - DO THE DAMAGE CD'S?
The good news with slot loading is you can toss the CD across the room and see if you can land it in the slot...takes practice but totally worth it...
