Which would you choose for good sounding tube preamp for an audiophile new to tubes.
I use an original series Freya (no "+" but hey...I don’t care, and with the original you can snap back and forth between the tubes and passive without shutting the tubes off, which I like. Adjust the level of course.) into a Pass XA-25. Sublime, a...
Audio stops pain
I've been a musician for decades and a "classic" migraine sufferer since I was a kid...it gets better as you age so no biggie now...but music will not, never will, never has, and absolutely can't help soothe actual migraines...whoever claims other...
Need an integrated amp that sounds engaging at lower volume
Every good amp sounds weak at low volume, and if it doesn't it's gonna sound awful at higher levels...boosted bass and treble...no no no (like classic 70's JBL speakers with a response curve like a smile). If you gotta have that "smile" at low lev...
Is it me or new audio gear is too perfect and give ear fatigue?
The 2 amps I use (swapping them from time to time) are a single ended tube amp by Dennis Had and a Pass XA-25, and the remarkable thing is how similar they sound although they're utterly different designs. I dislike distortion or noise from any ge...
The new dynamic in speaker pricing
Wealthy people generally don't care at all about hifi (just like regular folks).
After the thrill is gone
Over the last couple of years I tried three new well regarded speaker pairs and none were as good as what I already had...so if it ain't got the "thrill" after an appropriate break in it's outta here. My current speakers have earned their place.
Why Music Has Lost it’s Charms (Article)
Again, mahgister, sheet music was around way before Edison. Commercially available sheet music...hit songs of the time...
The Future of Hifi is just being Discovered

Why Music Has Lost it’s Charms (Article)
I’ve been involved in music for many decades as a pro musician and live sound mixer and so much of that article (and the responses here) is such nonsense it makes my head spin. By the way, "commercial" music has been around since way before record...
what’s a song cover that you think is better than the original?
Feat's "Lonesome Whistle" kills me, as does pretty much any Lowell George vocal.
MM, MC, or MI cartridge
Ortofon Quintet Blue...easy set up, great sound for 500 bucks on my trusty old Linn Basik Akito. My Quintet Red is also a great MC, but hey...ya get curious (my Linn Basik cost 500 bucks used when I bought it some years ago). A Quintet Black is in...
Isn't it really about quality of recording?
A great recording of lame music is unlistenable. Great music is great even if it's an older mono mix or something done to a standard that didn't exist yet.  A great sounding system with interesting, well recorded music is ideal.  Also, a great sys...
I am taking a survey
I'll only say that it possibly ranks among the top 325 psychopathic mother themes. Possibly.
Klipsch Heresy IV - not what I was expecting
I don’t like the new midrange horn design (completely different from the IIIs which have an interesting compression "tunnel" and strange pointy phase plug with titanium diaphragm) in the Heresy IVs after trying a new pair hoping they’d "break-in" ...
Why do hipsters prefer analog?
Modern hipsters have been around long enough to no longer be hip.
