For tube sound, which is more important: preamp or power amp?
I now have my Freya, and at this early point I can say it’s pretty damn good. The passive and FET modes are very similar sounding in my early assessment, and the tube stage is nice and hot with more than enough gain to send my Fire Bottle amp into...
Trying to bridge a gap between my amp and speakers
I had a Jolida 502P power amp that served me well for years, and I found the Jolida dudes in MD to be a joy to talk to. I'm currently using a SS Kavent S-33 (obscure re-badged Vincent) preamp that sounds great, but will be auditioning (meaning I j...
Genalex GL GZ-34 Rectifier...Did I just get a bad one? Five months seems
I bought a Shuguang 274B that is way cool looking and is in second place among the rectifiers I own, although it seems to work nearly as well as the GL (I might be imagining the differences, as audio geeks do imagine things at times). It's hard to...
For tube sound, which is more important: preamp or power amp?
Tube gear opens up a gigantic barn door of idiosyncrasies that make up the fun part of the "tubist" cult. The Schiit Vidar certainly isn't a tube amp but it was designed to be used with their tube preamps so maybe it matches well with those. Not m...
Genalex GL GZ-34 Rectifier...Did I just get a bad one? Five months seems
I have a GL GZ34 rectifier in a Dennis Had SEP amp and of the 3 rectifiers I have, this one seems to sound the best (with KT88s anyway), and has performed perfectly under daily abuse, or use, or something. Non cryoed, from Tube Depot
For tube sound, which is more important: preamp or power amp?
Somehow I've avoided Cryoed tubes…seems to be an unnatural thing to put those poor tubes through, although I might try a pair anyway to see what's what. And Danaroo, check out a Schiit Vidar (relatively cheap at 700 bucks or so) maybe as there see...
Has anyone made the jump to $uper High end and were disappointed?
It’s true that unless you join some audio geek club someplace, very few care about the new tube you bought or how great your system sounds. Doesn’t bother me one bit however as I have enough fun with the stuff as to render outside opinions irrelev...
Adcom?
I thought the ST-140 simply looked cool…the proper satin finished handles…just cool…besides being an inexpensive and well regarded amp.
Can a Quality Full Range Speaker be the Limiting Component in a system?
My speakers sounded fine with a push-pull 65 watts per side tube amp, and in anticipation of obtaining a lower powered single ended tube amp I switched to a pair of well regarded higher efficiency speakers. I bought the amp (Dennis Had Fire Bottle...
Looking to get into tubes on the cheap
Years ago my quest for a tube power amp led to to talking to the Jolida guys in MD, including the owner Michael Allen, and I became convinced they knew how to put together a great amp. The amp I bought, a "factory modded" 502P power amp, was a tro...

Blue glass JJ 88s! I don't own any of those but I want some! I don't think you can discount the esthetic element of tubes…I'm using a great sounding pair of Sovtek 88s from my "back up tube stash" partly because they have a groovy blue glow inside...
Horn based loudspeakers why the controversy?
Did the classic Altec A7 811 horns from 1970 have phase plugs? I thought the "Tangerine" thing was later but I'm now not sure..
Jolida owners, Need tube help
I owned a Jolida 502p amp and wound up preferring NOS Mullard 12AT7s (6201s…gold pin gems from Upscale), and a matched pair of new version Gold Lion 12AX7s…both great sounding tubes.
Horn based loudspeakers why the controversy?
I owned a pair of A7s from the early 70s until the mid 80s generally doing bi-amped live sound duty, and when used as stereo speakers from time to time they were astonishingly good. Not "flat" by definition but they had a charming, perhaps faux, "...
Has anyone made the jump to $uper High end and were disappointed?
Somehow I doubt that the supposed "rich people," based on those I've  known anyway, have the time to really listen to music because for them it's an insane hustle all the time, often tempered by wondering if you're getting ripped off by somebody. ...
