Graphene Sluggo - Unlocking Sonic Scenery
To me, I get the idea that a circuit breaker might make more sense than an old fashioned fuse, but never went down the rabbit hole of "audio" fuses and don't have much to contribute on circuit breakers other than that I try to specify copper buss ...
Graphene Sluggo - Unlocking Sonic Scenery
How are gear manufacturers treating this Swiss box w/ slug? Impact on gear warranty?
Do You Have to Play a Component to Warm it Up?
@erik_squires - I’ve done it both ways. My experience with the Lamms is that they sound better warmed up using music than simply turning them on and letting them run without signal. The vintage Quad system is quicker to warm up--you can hear them ...
Do You Have to Play a Component to Warm it Up?
Really, @erik_squires? My Lamm SETs like to play 45 minutes or so before they come on song. Ditto, my other tube components. My phono cartridge opens up after 3 sides. My vintage system, which is less "critical" seems to like about 20 minutes and ...
How Long Should a First Watt SIT3 Last ?
I’ve been a tube guy since the early ’70s. Lots of high quality tube amps over the years. Have been using Lamm ML2 SET amps since around 2006 in a chain that is all tube, from phono, to power supply, to line stage, to amps. I use NOS tubes through...
Is the idea of audiophile listening a dying concept as boomers die off?
I think we (as in audiophile, studied listening) have always been a niche. When I was a teen into my 20s, listening was a social activity-- there was much less home entertainment to compete. Into my 30s and 40s, I participated in an audio club in ...
Solid State Power Amps
I've been all tube since the early '70s, but recently started exploring very low wattage, high quality SS for my Avantgarde Duos as an alternative to my Lamm ML2 SETs. Valvet is apparently a high quality, grainless, Class A amp and though the mode...
You can't afford a Lambo Veneno, so get this..
Yep. The earliest F- BB, a 365, had the same issue. Later versions, ala 512BB and BBi fixed that problem. The 365 BB is a serious piece these days. Alas, the days of these being found for mere mortal money are in the rear view.
You can't afford a Lambo Veneno, so get this..
@lewm-or a Periscopo Countach. Al Burtoni (RIP) had fully restored one for 95k back in the mid-'90s. I went to look at it. I couldn't really fit into it, the fit and finish was like a kit car. The Miura was probably the most stunning--the early no...
Great Interview-
We went to hear Joe many times in the early days- he was hauling his own gear in a rental box truck. He eventually morphed more into a hard rock act. I wish him continued success, but the blues based stuff was what attracted me.
What was the most expensive record that you ever bought ?
Most of the high value (in terms of price) records I have are a large collection of UK Vertigo Swirls of the more obscure prog acts, private label and small label post bop jazz from the early '70s, a few real outliers-- De De Lind Io Non So Da Dov...
Would you still pay $10k or more for a turntable not full analog front end these days ?
This is like that old joke about bacon and eggs- the chicken is involved, the pig is committed. I’m "committed" to the LP format since 1970 or so. Which means I have a fair amount of records. Yes, more work, and if I were starting out today, I’d ...
Issue with Audioirvana streaming
You might try posting your issue on the Audirvana forum. When I was messing around with it, I found that more experienced members had solutions without waiting for a response from the manufacturer- who could also chime in. (At the time, I think yo...
Modem speed, how important for streaming?
@emergingsoul - not sure about that, but my experience in the early days of video streaming was that while I had enough bandwidth by static packet burst testing, there was some choke point at times, enough to throw the stream into buffering. This ...
room setup suggesion needed
Square rooms are tougher, acoustically. Consider the possibility of working a corner as the "center" of a stereo pair (as well as moving the speakers out from the "front" wall). Because you’ve referred to "rehearsal" space several times, I’m assum...
