Subwoofers with room correction built in?
I’ll echo the last two posts and add that even the cheap 8033 from Dspeaker, which is only meant for subwoofers, works well, particularly if you dial in the woofers as much as possible (placement, crossover, gain, phase, etc.). I run such a unit f...
The Immediate Family
I caught those guys various times during the height of the LA singer-songwriter period in the '70s--along with David Lindley and others, like Victor Feldman. Sklar should step in for Dusty in ZZ. You know how long it takes to grow a beard like tha...
Stylus Wear Question
At the risk of tooting my own horn, I did a deep dive on this issue- stylus life- in helping Mike Bodell publish an article on the subject entitled "The Finish Line for Your Phono Cartridge." Mike, who is a geologist by training, found that his ca...
Lack of Lamm customer service?
@rich121 - I normally email her; she usually calls me or emails me back toward the end of the day. The mailbox is full is normal. The restructuring is a new one to me, but I'll try to reach them tomorrow and see what's up. Last I was in contact wi...
Stylus Wear Question
Even if you have an appropriate microscope, you have to know what to look for. I agree that sending it to a specialist makes the most sense. With Peter, you should find out what their turnaround time is. Steve at VAS is also solid (NJ). The concep...
Lack of Lamm customer service?
Me too. I think they prefer that you work through a dealer, but I didn't have one (or they didn't) at the time I was buying some of mine (a pair of ML2 SET amps which I still have and the L2 Reference line stage, which has since left the building)...
Lay Off the Newbies!
@styleman- at the risk of sounding patronizing, when the geezers like me came up, there was no Internet, so what we learned was all a function of reading, meeting with other audiophiles, hanging and listening as a quasi-social event. Even if the g...
What is the most important component to consider while building a new system?
I don't know that there is a holistic approach or even one which singles out a component within a hierarchy (yes, I remember Linn's marketing). I'd define objectives and priorities first. For me, it starts with the midrange. It has to be grain free...
Re-issue, CD, SACD, Tape....LP....and what studio tapes are being used....
@bdp24 - fair point on the use of "safety" copies. These days, trying to get access to the old tapes is very difficult unless you are Chad, Kevin Gray or someone within the fold. KOB has a huge amount written about it-- I think Sony (formerly CBS)...
Re-issue, CD, SACD, Tape....LP....and what studio tapes are being used....
Good luck with that. With the exception of a handful of audiophile labels on LP, a lot of labels are not transparent about source, let alone a so-called first generation master tape. I know the tape heads here will say they have a connection and g...
Jazz Music Question
Thanks for doing the heavy lifting there, @charles1dad . I got bored with straight-ahead stuff that was common audiophile fodder, didn't completely understand "big band" and did not get into fusion after various hard rock. What got me re-interested...
Returning to audiophilism after 20 years: a little guidance would be nice :-)
@pieterkadijk- A lot has happened in audio during the 20 years you were "missing":I don't think there is as much of a "versus" in analog and digital anymore- I'm still primarily vinyl based, but digital seems to have come a long way. I can't speak...
Blues for Aficionados
Two essentials for me. One is Elmore James "Sunnyland" (not to be confused with a song by the same name earlier recorded by James). This one is dirty, distorted and has an edge that hard rock guitars wished to emulate. The other is the Buddy Guy re...
Need a DAC Recommendation.
Thank you for the response, yyz.
Need a DAC Recommendation.
@yyzsantabarbara - Since you have the Gustard X26Pro, can you provide any insight on comments I've seen that the unit runs hot (temperature-wise)? I assume this unit would be left on all the time, but the heat issue makes me wary. (An analog guy i...
