hm1 - with due respect, I think you are still stuck in the '80s. Most of us don't even bother to argue these issues any more. But, don't let me stop you. Thanks for visiting planet audio.

hm1- I don’t think you get away that easily. Please re-read my previous post: the question of "perspective" that you seem to be complaining about really starts with the recording. And much of what I described pertains to orchestral recordings and ...
Who in the North New Jersey area. to set up and dial in turntable?
Good for you, GEG! I'm in NY right now, but hankering to get back to Texas. Welcome to your new home- that's exciting.

Don't we have to start with how the recording was recorded? Some audiophile records and some classical and jazz records were set up to get a pretty natural perspective on the proceedings. (Simple two track recordings of a blues band, or man + guit...
Question about valves running hours
migueca- I don't know about military/industrial practice, but back in the '60s, it was pretty common for tubes (and free standing tube testing machines that looked like ATMs in size) to be everywhere- drug stores, hardware stores, electronic speci...

As impressive a roster as any. Those shows in that era covered a huge range of different types  and styles of music, and I don't think the audiences were all that different- you could hear soul or boogie one night and go psychedelic the next.
Is a stereo amp, when bridged to mono, by definition differential?

So, let me throw in a question about that Audiopax amp- the 88, if memory serves, which consisted of two mirror image amp circuits that were combined in a single channel with controls that allowed you to vary their performance in relation to each ...

So, Wolf, have you gone to hear David Lindley do his one man shows? He is out and about again. Killer player, great range of stringed instruments. (And, not too loud, which always kills it for me- he used to use a Dumble but I think he just uses t...

I know, as I guess any Zep fan does, that Page used a Tele on Zep 1 with a small overdriven amp. When he started using Les Pauls, I think he overdrove them by using the Echoplex preamp into the amps- Marshalls? Live -very loud.Reproducing that at ...

I remember playing Zep 1 shortly after it was released on a system cobbled together by taking a suitcase stereo my parents owned, and jacking the output into an organ amp and a PA column that I set up in my bedroom when my parents weren't home. Si...
New Vinyl or Old Vinyl ?
MoFi, is your UK first an A2/B2? Do you find it grainy? I've had some early UKs, not a true first, and the B2 sides always sounded less good than the B3. My go to is generally the UK A3/B3, but like you, I have a bunch of copies. Never owned the U...

Do you have a stylus pressure gauge and the protractor for the arm, at a minimum? I don’t know enough about the Reed arm to advise on specific set up issues peculiar to it, but you want to make sure you’ve got overhang and alignment in the arm (ze...

JerryG and String- have no axe to grind re Mr. Rutan, but are you suggesting that the OP take his turntable to the dealers and schlep it home with the expectation that the 'set-up' done in store will be sufficient? Obviously, if Audio Connection m...
