Michael Fremer's record cleaning process....
Slaw: with due respect, the older I have gotten, the less I believe that there is "one best" anything- writer, cleaning method, record, etc. (Frogman did you a solid in response to your 'extraordinary recordings thread' in a somewhat similar vein)...
180 gram?
Lee Hulko is another name to look for in the dead wax. Shown as LH. I find very little correlation between vinyl "weight" and sonics. Some of the CBS stuff from the mid '70s is on flimsy vinyl and sounds great. Ditto some of the UK RCA's from that...
Michael Fremer's record cleaning process....
I give Fremer credit for keeping the vinyl torch burning (sorry for the mixed metaphor) during the nadir of the medium. And he does seem to have endless energy, running to shows, writing for Stereophile, keeping up the Analog Planet site, and doin...
Michael Fremer's record cleaning process....
It was an old piece that Fremer had republished from another writer, as I recall, using Orbitrac(k) pads, and perhaps even a fluid that is no longer made. I can try to find you a link because it was on his AnalogPlanet site. I believe Fremer mainl...

overwhelmed by record rituals
Margot- yes. that's both. Eventually, you replace just the wand when the velvety stuff wears out. I don't know if there is any size difference between older 16.5 and the current production, I doubt it, but just to be sure, you should check. My VP...
overwhelmed by record rituals
Quite welcome, Margot. The historical aspects of recorded music are what really intrigue me- both the technical aspects and the musical/creative ones. Re the glue thing, I never tried it, some people on the Hoffman forum who are avid collectors ha...
overwhelmed by record rituals
Margot: Re the 'clarification': if you look at a VPI 16.5 you'll see that the vacuum wand (the part that touches the record, spans that record from rim to spindle and has velvet-like lips and a slot to pull the liquid off the record) inserts into ...
overwhelmed by record rituals
Margot, I believe in a 'pure' water rinse- how pure can drive you to distraction, but in my estimation, it is good practice- to remove any residue from the fluid and pick up any remaining contaminants. So, yes, separate applicators, vacuum wands/to...
overwhelmed by record rituals
Ask three audiophiles about record cleaning and you'll get 17 different responses. Here's my take:The surface brushes push surface dust around, don't remove it and have the potential to add a static charge despite claims to the contrary. I usually...
Extraordinary recordings on vinyl
Slaw, at the risk of stirring the pot, I just did an extensive shoot-out of Tull's Aqualung, and included first pressings, U.S. and UK, some early U.S. Reprise pressings (the sort of stuff you can find in a bin on the cheap), and most of the "audi...
Extraordinary recordings on vinyl
Slaw, if you like Black Dub, you should pick up the Trixie Whitley EP cut at 45 from Belgium with one track, "I'd Rather Go Blind" (not to be confused with the famous Etta James' piece). Same band, same tunefulness, even better production quality ...
HELP WITH A PREAMP DECISION
Hunter: out of curiosity, do you have the original Veloce, or the later so-called "Lithio" model? I had both in my system, and the later version is dramatically better in every respect. It replaced a Lamm L2 Reference line stage, and I am still us...

Palasr: thanks for posting that- I hadn't seen it before, and I can see where the author comes out the way he does; we probably assign slightly different priorities to what we hear, our systems are undoubtedly different, etc. But, more in common, ...
