Vintage integrated Amps. What to look for?
I would look for a clean Accuphase E202 and have a recap done....great build quality. The great thing about the vintage Accuphase is they are designed with plug in PCB's and once you upgrade them.....well I have upgraded many and they sound simply...
Tube amplifier bad caps
I think your better off finding a qualified tech and have him troubleshoot the problem. All of the caps? that seems unlikely as the unit looks to be fairly new. Even at 40 to 50 dollars an hour I doubt the bill would be more than $200-300.
Running a fan to cool amplifier any ill effects?
Thanks for the responses so far....the fans are on a seperate cicuit than my audio equipment. I checked out the noise level...not a problem. I realise that the amplifiers are well designed units....the transformer housing which is thick heavy meta...
VAC owners, sound off
I will never sell my VAC's....they are that good....buy it.
"Breathing" of the air
The more air the better....resolving and transparency ability dictate the anount of air present. There is air around and between instruments and then the movement of air through instuments and vocalists. So I think the amount of air signals more t...
What has been your most satisfying component?
I rarely buy new equipment....DAC...yes but I seem to be able to upgrade my equipment. So I have found I get more enjoyment doing that than creating a revolving door. I have had my speakers since 1980 and my Accuphase since 1975. The VAC Rennaissa...

Sell Hi-Fi and invest in stock market?
Maybe.....8 years from now....take it from a big dog....things have'nt gotten bad yet. When they can't give a NYSE seat away....buy...buy...and buy!
Repairing older amps
If you have a good tech.....that's 3/4's of the battle in my experience....well designed equipment is certainly important. A good tech can add so much value added...I bow down to the one I use.
resolution and imaging
I'll add some observations about what takes place(my system)when very good imaging, resoltion and transparency are present. Everything has been constant for a while....speakers,cables,preamps..but I have had maybe six different amplifiers pass thru...

To hear a recording that represents everything mentioned in this thread...I suggest the Living Stereo Copland "Billy the Kid"/Groffe "Grand Canyon Suite" Morton Gould....if there is a better recording that conveys the genius of these American comp...
resolution and imaging
I agree that some CD's thought lacking...are now listenable. The increase in overall resolution has given new insight for me into the engineering of the recording. As example...Ampex 300 3 channel recordings are obvious as are most or all recordin...
resolution and imaging
Does it matter at the back of the hall...I would think only the sound level would be affected. Reproducing the accuracy of the tonal qualities may be like looking through a 4x optical but I really like the portrayl from my listening seat.
resolution and imaging
Oh and let me throw in PRAT as well....so the bottom line is...for me... is a very low THD amplifier either voiced by the manufactuer or by me (modding) effects every aspect of the reproduction I hear...the enjoyment level has gone up significantly.
