Tom Waits, Rain Dogs...
Yeah, I agree that Waits really is one of a kind. My first experience with his work was hearing "Heart Attack and Vine" in college. It blew me away, and I've been a big fan ever since. "Swordfishtrombones" is my personal favorite, although there a...
Tom Waits, Rain Dogs...
Marco,That's an excellent overview, I'd say. If you want to try some Springsteen that's a little closer to the darkness and depravity in Waits' music, give a listen to "Nebraska." It also is much starker musically, and closer to Waits in this way-...
Any insight with the Berkeley Alpha DAC ..??
Drubin,It is going swimmingly. I was really struggling with making a decision between the Berkeley/Computer-based music server, the Marantz SA-7S1, or the Abbingdon CD-77. I couldn't really arrange any auditions in my own system--which is really t...
What are your fav “Off Hollywood” films
It figures that many audiophiles are also film buffs. I love to see a director as brilliant and underrated as Atom Egoyan getting his props here. "The Sweet Hereafter" is stunning. I think "Exotica" is just as good, and perhaps more challenging. A...
Any insight with the Berkeley Alpha DAC ..??
I got mine a couple of weeks ago, but due to a hectic schedule have not yet been able to spend enough time with it to make any definite determination about whether I like it best with or without a preamp in the chain. It sounds really great both w...
Any insight with the Berkeley Alpha DAC ..??
Maxx2man,Are you running straight into the amp, or do you have a preamp in the chain? Thanks.
Any insight with the Berkeley Alpha DAC ..??
I am using the Lynx with the XLR breakout cables. I am under the impression that the Berkeley sounds best running direct to the amplifier, but my experience has always been that a good preamp adds body and texture, so I will be trying it both ways...
Any insight with the Berkeley Alpha DAC ..??
I am working on it. I already have a Dell Inspiron 530 with the Lynx AES 16 sound card installed. I am using Media Monkey to rip and manage my CD collection. The computer will be used solely as a music server.I should be receiving the Berkeley Alp...
Your favorite recent discovery
Audiofeil,If you like the new Sparklehorse, I urge you to go back and pick up the others, especially "It's A Wonderful Life" and "Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot." Really great, ethereal music.
Jump in now or wait?
I am wrestling with it as well, Dokosan. I think your post is timely. I am looking to upgrade my digital source, and keep going back and forth between excellent players such as the Marantz SA-7S1 and the Abbindgon AMR CD77 (my top two contenders o...
Looking for a CD player with more life
Ken,One player that is sort of under the radar in your price range is the Original CD 2008 modded by Moon Audio. I believe you can audition this player to see if it works in your system. I did, and ended up buying it. If I had to describe its soni...

How do I spend $5000? A CD player or DAC for my De
The guy who suggested it (the media server) as an option is also a dealer. Just sayin'...
Shelby Lynne
Glad to see some other Jayhawks fans here. I do beg to differ on one point. I think Rainy Day Music is as good as Hollywood Town Hall, and actually better than Tomorrow The Green Grass. Also, don't overlook their first record, Blue Earth, where th...
How good is the Marantz SA-7S1?
Bob,Thanks for your thorough--and very insightful--response. I completely agree with you about keeping components until, a) you are sure they are fully broken in, and b) you have done your best to find the right cables, meaning ALL cables, includi...
