40+ watts SET, cost is not a problem
Pani, You have two of the best circuit designers I am aware of (Ralph and Lynn) tell you that tubes are not going to deliver what you are looking for with your hard to drive speakers. I'd believe them. Class D GnFETs are one very good option (th...
Seeking Bookshelf Recommendations
+++++1 Joseph Audio Pulsars ($4,300 used, but usually don't last long), Fritz Carrera ($3,700 new), Buchardt Audio S400 MKII ($2,400 new), and Philharmonic BMR ($2,000 new) I have had the Pulsars and BMRs in my system on extended loan from frien...
Listening position/speaker position
Fred, Sorry that will take a bit, I've got to completely redo my audio rack because the Motherlode XL is a "two box" configuration to isolate the power source from the signal components......connected by an umbilical. I can tell you that it is on...
Listening position/speaker position
Not to hijack Willht thread, but I need some advice as well. I see all of the recommendations, and they are for box speakers. My question is how do these change (if at all) for open baffle speakers? I am finishing a listening room that will be 20L...
Suggestions for power amps
Katzlar, +1 for the Aric Audio Transcend "Push Pull" amplifier. There is one right now on US Audio Mart that is 4 years old for $2,400 including free shipping. It also includes a set of El34 power tubes, a set of KT150 tubes, and various 6SN7 tub...
Aurender n200, talk me out of signing on the dotted line
wlutke and Curiousjim, I noticed that both of you reference having bought your Aurenders directly from Korea and had them drop shipped to you. Can you explain why that is advantageous over buying locally, is it price mostly? If it is, where did y...
Spatial Audio Raven Preamp
The Don Sachs and Lynn Varley Revelation (Raven) preamp and Blackbird 300B amps seem extremely interesting. I've followed their 300B thread here on Audiogon (where Ralph from Atmosphere has added a ton), and it is a master class in tube amp and pr...
40+ watts SET, cost is not a problem
Pani, Your speakers are not exactly easy to drive at 85db 4 ohms. I'm going to echo what many have already said, and that is you night not be happy with a SET amplifier.....you may have to drive it hard to get what you are looking for, and that m...
Best for Classic/Progressive Rock and Blues
Johnnotkathi, For me, the $1,000 a pair is just not going to give you what you are looking for.....without having to add more money (surrounds, caps, drivers, blemishes). $1,400 to $1,500 might very well get that for you, and the JBL L100s, Yamah...
The new Coda S5.5 amplifier: It's a "Petite Beast"!
sim_audio_nerd, I just looked up your Supratek Grange Signature, that looks like a beautiful beast! I'd love to hear your comments once the CODA shows up
The new Coda S5.5 amplifier: It's a "Petite Beast"!
Teajay, Got some good news this week, Aric Audio is shipping my new modified Motherlode XL preamp! It will be a little while for me to reconfigure my setup, but really looking forward to hearing the CODA S5.5 and Aric Audio Transcend "Push Pull" ...
Axpona 2024 who is going and why?
Aric, That is amazing news. I am so looking forward to the Motherlode XL, the combo with the CODA S5.5 and your Transcend "Push Pull" amplifiers should be eye popping! Lot's of fun to be had, thanks as always for input and hard work.
Your thoughts on best audiophile speakers in $10,000 neighborhood?
Be sure to pay special attention to the specs of the speakers, if they are too hard to drive you'll need a new amplifier too. If I were in your shoes I'd look at a sensitive speakers, over 90 db efficient. Sonus Faber usually fits there, but othe...
15k for streamer and dac....how much on each?
Audiocanada, You're getting some great information here, all of it good.....but all of it (including mine) is subjective based on our experiences. I'd spend more on the DAC, but still get a really nice streamer. I'd go 60/70% DAC and 30/40% strea...
Going Tubing
Bimmerlover, I'd suggest starting with a tube preamp, you get a lot of the benefit without the complexity of a tube amp. I can highly recommend: Backert Labs Rhumba Extreme (1.3 or 1.4), and the BAT VK-80.....they were part of my listening journe...
