Mosfets: The way to go for SS amplification?
IMHO, it's not necessarily the parts, but the sum of the parts that matters.
Here's how a CD copy of a copy can sound better
lchapper, I beg to differ.
Small room big amp, need speakers
I don't have personal experience with them ,but, maybe Gradients? IMHO, if I understand your post, (10' X 10' room?) you may need something like a TacT before you consider speakers.
Impedance Help
Hervel, so far your OK, how about the ouput impedance of the CD player. Does it vary with volume setting and if so what's the range? What kind and how long is the interconnect?
Output Impedance Preamp-Input Impedance Amp
MFB33 and Viridian, I owe you an appology. I realize that in my usuall confused state of mind tht I was thinking of another thread that was considering a system sans preamp (passive) which would have been much more demanding. You should be fine.
Ever Have One Of Those Evenings?
Maxgain, yes there was a 5 (and 5i), it didn't use an equalizer but instead more drivers in a much bigger box as Sean suggested. The 5 was considerably more expensive. My favorite Thiels all seem to be sealed boxes.
Nondirectional & Inaudible Bass: What Frequencies?
Sean, some of Dunlavy's more recent works seem to support your point.
Ever Have One Of Those Evenings?
Sean, I agree with you re: sealed boxes sans equalization and extra size, how ever digital equalization may offer us a chance to "tune to the room" and do it with out the compromises that used to come the old fashioned analog way, what new comprom...
Nondirectional & Inaudible Bass: What Frequencies?
Viridian, excellent point!
Ever Have One Of Those Evenings?
Maxgain, you may be surprised to know that Thiel's latest offering includes electronic equalization though this time it's in the digital domain. As for me, I think Thiel's 3.5 was one of their best efforts, and that one came with an equalizer. Yes...
Output Impedance Preamp-Input Impedance Amp
Viridian, if the output impedance were lower and the input impedance was higher it would be even better. Mind you that is very possible.
Ever Have One Of Those Evenings?
BTW, I'm not suggesting that you mislead the good people at Thiel, especially saint Shari. I just wouldn't offer them anything unecessary.
Ever Have One Of Those Evenings?
Perhaps an independent evaluation of your amp might be in order?
Here's how a CD copy of a copy can sound better
Ake, I was surprised by this as well. I have a CD copy done by a Thomas W. Shea, E-mail; http://www.sunset.net/musicman that is absolute proof that a copy can be better than the original. I'm not sure if it's due to sucessive upsampling,oversampli...
Output Impedance Preamp-Input Impedance Amp
O.K., but not ideal.
