Thiel CS 3.6 amplifier selection Monarchy SM 70?
I respectfully disagree with Kenny. Sure you'll get sounds from the Thiels with such an amp, but you won't get all the Thiels are capable of unless you get a more appropriate amp for the speakers.
Speaker appearance verses musicality.
Glad you brought this up. I've been wondering about the same thing for years. If I ever (doubtful) build my own speakers, I think this is the approach I'll take. I think it would be a lot easier, less expensive and sound better.
thiel 3.5 or von schweikert 4 gen 2
I can't offer much on the Von Schweikert's, but as for the Thiel 3.5's, you won't get the best out of them with out appropriate amplification.
Why the obsession with the lowest octave
Not that I'm saying he's wrong, or for that matter that he's correct, but for those that might not know, JohnK is a manufacturer of bass horns.
finding the right speakers for my room + budget
To be honest, I don't really remember how these actually sounded, but the Vandersteen surround sound speakers, used as main left and right speakers, perhaps augmented be their subs, might meet your criterion.
Is age bad for solid state amps?
Transistors can be replaced. If matching transistors are unavailable, often times sets of different transistors can be retrofitted. Though this would probably be a relatively expensive procedure, one would have to consider what the costs would be ...
Why the obsession with the lowest octave
"How else to listen to your yello collection?" Why, mello of course.
Why the obsession with the lowest octave
Er, what I meant to post was;"Some rooms just can'T accomodate low bass, ...."
Why the obsession with the lowest octave
Some rooms just can accommodate low bass, and when presented with it, don't know what to do with it.
Why the obsession with the lowest octave
The same could be said for the highest octave. As for me, I disagree. Yes, I know most music (about 80%), is in the midrange, but I want it all, and miss it when it's gone. I suggest getting as much of the music that's on the recording as your bud...
BDP 93 or BDP 95? More slam dunks from OPpo?
Blindjim, will the next format have glassless 3D on some kind of non mechanical memory drive?

Is 11' distance from projector screen too close?
Don't bother keying the link that wouldn't come up as a hyper-link. Use Byron's hyper-link, it's the same.
