Pass amps tend to sound best through their balanced inputs. c-j only makes single ended outputs. Some of the c-j pres  output impedances might be tricky with the Pass's input impedance.
What makes an amp sound more direct ?
IME, this directness you speak of usually has more to do with the recording technique than anything else.
McIntosh
^ OK, then educate me.

McIntosh's use of autoformers on their ss amps doesn't make sense to me, the use of which compromises frequency response linearity.
McIntosh and Autoformers. . .?
Wow, a 13 year old thread!I don't understand why McIntosh's still uses autoformers on their ss amps. It negates the ability to adapt to real world speaker impedance variability and ergo negates the ability to provide  linear frequency response. Ot...

^Interesting how Jim Thiel's own subs were all sealed boxes.

^oops, that's a 10" woofer not a 10' woofer. :-)
Thiel Owners
^If I may; it's not a typical eq. It's really a bass only booster. By compensating for the natural bass roll off of the 10' woofers in a relatively modest sized sealed box cabinet Jim Thiel (and others including B&W, KEF ,etc.) was able to mak...

Oblgny, I'd suggest trying the 40 Hz setting on Thiel's eq and using the sub below that point. This might increase the dynamic range, and "ease". Though the dynamic range of the bass on the 3.5's isn't it's strongest point, overall the Thiel 3.5's...
More resistance is less load??
A long time ago amplifiers had a great deal of trouble dealing with low impedances and high power. With the advent of reliable ss amplification that can double down, speaker designers were free from those constraints to advance other aspects of sp...
More resistance is less load??
It's easier for a speaker manufacturer to get a steady impedance (which amongst other things increases the potential for frequency linearity) with lower impedances than higher numerical impedances. Most of speakers that can provide wave form fideli...
More resistance is less load??
There are reasons that a speaker manufacturer might choose to design a loudspeaker with lower numerical impedances. Measurements at the amplifier, are just that measurements at the amplifier. Yes, it's true that those measurements might effect the...

The 3.5's and 3.6's used different drivers, similar but different cross-overs. The 3.5's used bass eq/boosted sealed boxes, and with the 3.6's a passive radiator.IMHO, the 3.5's are more coherent, have deeper bass response, and are easier to ampli...
Upgrade path
Not a fan of the Macs. Excellent build quality, plenty of parts, and service techs, but the sound to my ears is lifeless. And though with such copius power it might not matter too much, but sacrificing the otherwise advantages of frequency lineari...
