Publication bias and confounders in product reviews - TAS, Stereophile, Audiogon, etcetera @browndt Absolutely! There are numerous manufacturers that for one reason or another are not members of "the club". They good ones soldier on, on the strength of their product, word of mouth, etc., without a boost from S-phile or AS.
Old or new gear Have a look at Audio by Van Alstine's offerings. He does an updated Dynaco as well as various other highly recommendable models.
Publication bias and confounders in product reviews - TAS, Stereophile, Audiogon, etcetera The point is that frequency of coverage, or indeed coverage at all, in the mainstream mags is no indication of anything really. Certainly not of a component's quality or popularity.
Classical Music for Aficionados @jcazador Does that include this?http://www.arkivmusic.com/classical/album.jsp?album_id=14872 If not, please give it a listen. And a second plug for John Field.
The ups and downs of tube vs. SS... I started off SS. Then I discovered Cary 300B. Loved the presentation, but it needed at least 1/2 hour warm-up, couldn't be left on constantly, so spontaneous listening sessions were sidelined. Short of time, like @jtweed, I switched back to SS...
Vandersteen 2CE Signature II: Is it worth the price of $2700? Why are so many for sale? Short answer: because there are so many of them out there. If you're seriously interested, talk to Johnny Rutan and get his highly informed advice on which version/iteration to get, and any tweaks he recommends.
Dedicated Red Book CD player vs. "Universal" type players.... I believe the Mohican lists for 5K. As they seem to be broadly comparable products, I believe the 1.5K premium puts the Hegel at something of a disadvantage, marketing-wise, to the Bryston.
Dedicated Red Book CD player vs. "Universal" type players.... @1graber2 The Mohican got very good reviews in one (or two?) of the mainstream mags, but so far I haven't come across a real live person (OK, r.l.p. on an internet forum) who owns it and wrote about it. As a long-time, satisfied owner of a BCD-1,...
Classical Music for Aficionados If you enjoy Chopin and Liszt piano concertos (as I do), check out John Field. There are a couple of recordings, both good. Also, get his Nocturnes. I like John O'Conor's recordings on Telarc. Enough to buy also, back in the day, the set of Be...
Comparing Bel Canto and Schiit DACs Didn't they divide off into Bel Canto and Wavelength?
Dedicated Red Book CD player vs. "Universal" type players.... Check out James Tanner's various pronouncements on the design parameters of Bryston BCD-3 over on AudioCircle. They eschewed a digital in, SACD capability, etc. etc., in order get Red Book as good as possible, which according to them isn't possib...
Publication bias and confounders in product reviews - TAS, Stereophile, Audiogon, etcetera There are two factors here. The speed with which products get reviewed. (Time of product launch to time of review publication.) And whether a brand/product gets reviewed at all.The frequency with which Musical Fidelity appeared in the pages of ...
KT120 back to 6550 @salectric that was pretty much my experience too. In a tube integrated, you can take care of the sweetness factor with the pre-amp tube(s).
keeping perspective on evaluating improvements P5 dropped off at Fedex today.Ordered up a Granite Audio 502 to give that a try.Currently running (oh the shame!) a Niles iPower, what with the power cuts we had yesterday with the wind.
Classical Music for Aficionados +1 to pianist recommendations. I also like Vladimir Ashkenazy. For earlier keyboard, Andreas Staier is really hard to beat. Top choice for me. |
