Help me put a system together for my son
Look for a used Quad 909 ($1695) for around $700 to drive the Maggies. 140 w/ch and a bit of boost in the bass as they were made for planers. Pair with $500 used PS audio GCPH phono preamp with volume control($1000). You're good to go. Add a tube ...
How to reach James Burgess?
In the past, I see that gerrye123 and bradearles have been helpful in connecting others to James Burgess via this forum but I can no longer seem to be able to send them a direct email with the new system. Fellows, a little help please.
Your thoughts on these different tubes?..
I'd suggest you try a preamp that uses 6SN7 tubes. It probably will be a more full sound than with a 12AX7 type -generally-, many exceptions. There are still many available and affordable NOS tubes to have fun "rolling". The 6SN7 are just a great ...
"Nightfly Trilogy" worth the trouble?
There is a "10 Extras" disk as part of that package which are not to be missed if you are a true fan...as I am. You'll enjoy it.
SS or Tubes for Spendor S3/5?
Having once owned these, and being a "tubee" I'd still suggest that these power hungry mini's perform best with disproportionally large amps, probably ss with lots of dampening power. Really, the bigger the better, I suspect.
Preamp with phase invert and balanced out???
If you can't switch the speaker cables at the speaker (..a bit confused here in that you will apparently/possibly be hooking up your Quad 12L's) switch them at the amp connection, right?I know, I'm probably completely missing something obvious - a...
Suggestions for speakers for my Cary 2a3se monos
Zu Soul Superfly (101db.) for $1800 here on audiogon is very hard to beat with only a conditional, forward sounding - but not bright- presence, which I like, as a caveat. Lively sounding, as in, if you like Shelter or Denon cartridges.
Suggestions for speakers for my Cary 2a3se monos
DeCapo 3MMi is a fine match for an easy tube-friendly 8 ohm crossoverless two way monitor for a reasonable $1500ish. Living Voice is 94db. for more$ as a floorstander.
help choosing a preamp
Forget the Audible Illusions, Art Ferris has the worst service i've ever experienced. Conversely, consider a Quicksilver Full Function Tube Preamp. Mike Sanders is great! His pre is built like a tank, has tube rectification (older one), many input...
Which vintage tube pre for my class D amp?
While generally a big fan of tube preamps, I'm reminded that with some Class D amps there may be impedance mismatches with a tube pre. If so, a darker, "dead" sound may result. Check it out first.
The ignorance of SACD & DVD-A marketing idiots....
Seakayer, That was EXACTLY my experience in a Best Buy too. Ditto.
Expected life of a MC amp
If you are using it that much I'd probably just leave SS on vs. turning it on/off 5 times/week (260 times/yr.). Probably sound a bit better too.
Tube Pre to mate with Parasound JC-1s & Maggies?
Quicksilver Full Function Tube Preamp with plenty of gain. The new model rarely appears on Audiogon for around $2000 and it has a great tube phono section. Have patience.
SummerTime and Amp Heat
So there you have it, either cool it or don't, another definitive answer from Audiogon Forum. Out of respect for Elizabeth's generally insightful logic, empirical and apparently Florida tested, I realize how colloquial I might have been and so, ha...
Vincent vs. Odyssey vs.? Power amp advice
I've been impressed by the Nova as a great value but, yes, Maggies might benefit from more power. I found that my Silver Mono Quicksilvers (KT88, 90 watts) had more "guts" driving my old 1.6's than a 300 watt solidstate amp because ( I think) the ...
